surgery's a bad scene. avoid it when possible.

i hope you're getting acupuncture (and maybe herbs) from your chinese doctor--unless s/he's just a doctor who's chinese.

Non-Music Shit / Re: TAX HELP!
« on: April 01, 2010, 11:27:38 AM »
you probably figured it out already if you looked at the form, but it looks like you *don't* meet the requirements (you must work full time at least 39 weeks during the 12 months right after you move). but it looks like you *can* file an amended tax return in august or september, when you do finally meet the time requirement.

i wouldn't take the deduction just yet--since they'll have your W-2s, they can easily check when you moved and started the new job. now, if you were transferred from your old job to the new, that's a different story...

of course, i'm not an accountant, but i do enjoy figuring out deductions for schedule Cs, section 179, etc.

Cities / Re: barcelona, sevilla, granada, madrid in feb/march

if you're not a vegetarian/vegan, eating'll be totally easy for you. we're mostly vegetarian and had a small list of restaurants (veg and not) to check out, but frankly we wound up just eating at places that we wandered by that looked good/cheap. the good thing about most restaurants is that they post their menus outside or in the window so you can make sure they're in your price range; the menu del dia (menu of the day; some places have menu del noche/night) is by far the best deal. if you look in the right places (the farther away from the ramblas we ventured in barcelona and the mega museums and attractions in madrid and sevilla, the cheaper food seemed), you can get three courses plus a drink (beer/wine an option) and dessert/coffee for around 9 euros. i tried to steer us past the places that posted menus in multiple languages as they were usually more expensive than "local" places, but you might not feel comfortable doing that. if you don't have a working knowledge of spanish, you might want to get a phrasebook (i use the lonely planet series) that has a menu decoder.

you can skip dinner altogether by going on a tapas/beer crawl. there's a wide range of tapas bars in all three cities--the crowded, bustling places are for whatever reason usually more expensive than the divey, stark, diner-y places with few seats and old men propped up at the bar. and more expensive/crowded doesn't mean the food's better. some places have tapas on toothpicks (you pay per toothpick), which we didn't do, but if they're 1 euro each, that seems kinda pricey, considering that some places have tapas plates starting at 1.50.

oh, and some places give you a free plate of tapas (spanish-style bruschetta, calamari rings, spanish tortilla, etc.) for each drink you order--score! unfortunately, unless you're in granada, it's hard to tell which places do that, although at the divey places, if you're at the bar, olives and other small things are usually free if you ask.

i'll give you some names/streets once i find my notebook...

We flew Spanair for 30 euros each, BCN to Seville; 1h35m flight. I think they were having a sale or something, but I think they're always having a sale. You should check into flying BCN to Seville and Madrid to BCN; it could be way cheaper than the AVE, and definitely faster. Vueling and Iberia also had cheap flights when I was looking; Ryanair and Easyjet might be worth looking into, too. Kayak it!

We did a 5-hr bus ride from Granada to Madrid; it was scenic but kind of a waste of a day.

Do you smoke or have any dietary restrictions?

just got back from barcelona, seville, granada, and madrid. totally need another vacation now!

madrid had quite a few record stores--super expensive unless you're looking for old or new spanish stuff. bcn seemed a little less expensive. i'll post that info soon, before you leave. are you flying to seville from bcn and taking the bus/train to madrid? and yeah, you should've flown out of madrid. too late to change your tickets?

Non-Music Shit / Re: insane way to spend a year...

groupon is a group coupon. so, say, 100 people have to buy that coupon for it to work. i don't think i've ever seen one not go through because not enough people buy it. it's available only in 30 major cities at the moment. i've used it a couple of times (discounted whalewatching trip, $10 for $20 worth of food, that sort of thing).

i think the strangest thing is that they expect you to travel across the country. you don't have any cash so you can't pay for bus/taxi/plane. you don't even get a bike, unless there's a groupon for bike rentals. and then what? although they do say "We expect to have plenty of Groupons for that ? both to get you around the city, and from city to city. You can also hitchhike, bum rides with friends and Groupon community members, etc."

eh. i figure there's someone in termbo land who's up for the challenge. it'll probably become some reality tv show at the end.

on nothing but groupons!

"We will choose one person to attempt to survive for one year with nothing but a laptop, cellphone, and an unlimited supply of Groupons. If successful, that person will receive $100,000!"

http://www.liveoffgroupon.com/

i couldn't do it, but i'd imagine if you didn't have a job or a place to live and were pretty extroverted and resourceful this would be a blast. plus the $100,000 at the end of it all.
