The Party Stompers

Detroit delinquents that put their own twist on the primitive, gritty sound of the Motor City bar bands of the 1958-63 era. A group built around the dual guitar attack of Jeff Meier (Rocket 455, Detroit Cobras, Compulsive Gamblers, The Shanks, Nathaniel Mayer, The Exit Eyes) and Mike Hurtt (Royal Pendletons, Nathaniel Mayer, Michael Hurtt & His Haunted Hearts).

The Party Stompers, formed in early 2008, also feature Adam Stanfel on bass and S.R. Boland on drums. They play vintage rock 'n' roll, R&B, blues, ballads, jumped-up hillbilly, cajun, swamp pop, proto-garage, and anything else they happen to like. The Party Stompers take their name from the savage 1960 single by the local group The Egyptians, "The Party Stomp" (the flip side was "Inkster Boogie," now part of the Stompers' repertoire), which captures the quintessential sound of raw, rockin' Detroit R&B as the '50s segued into the '60s.

Fuad & The Feztones

Local legends, Bobby Beaton (Fuad Ramses) & John Davis (Rich N. Ready), one half of Montreal's snotty Tyrants of Teen Trash, The Gruesomes, take you to the Valley of the Kings- The Kingsmen, that is! Serving up a slop of sleazy '60s twisters, stompin' garage-soul, raunchy horn-driven R&B, and swingin' Egyptian groove that's straight from the Pharoah's tomb... and baybee does it cook! Paying musical tribute to the likes of Booker T., Willie Mitchell, King Curtis, Freddie King, Sam the Sham, The Wailers, and every great combo that made a raw racket!

The Von Drats

Looking like extras on the Addams Family or a cartoon hot rod gang, no one has seen anything quite like the Von Drats! Their live shows are a kooky display of rowdy surf'n garage, with a sense of unpredictable humor. The lightning fast long arm of the drums, Leonard von Drat, bids you welcome and keeps everyone in stitches with his rapid fire wit. An uncontrollable wildman, Dave von Drat sets the mood with the spooky sounding Farfisa organ and spastic movements that would even leave old Uncle Fester in shock. The big brother Trevor von Drat quite easily transitions from being a calm and collected surf guitar gentlemen to a garage rock growling life of the party. The werewolf cursed DanO von Drat stares wild eyed and lays down a solid and smooth bass foundation for his savage kin to play over. The youngest brother, Steve von Drat, is a surf guitar sharp-shooter and a reverb tank riding creature that will leave you in disbelief!

If you dig wailin? backwoods ballads, roaring greaser goop, twangy country crooners and haunted hillbilly guitars chords... c?mon out to Sala on July 4th and witness Dex take ?em to church!

Dex?s guitar conjures the primal ghosts that live in the scratchy grooves of 45s that snake through our collective musical DNA; some are well known, most long forgotten, but no one can draw the line between Link Wray and Marlene Dietrich and have it make sense like Dex. And when he sings, you get the sense, sometimes uneasy, that here is a man that HAS to sing, has to let it out, or all the pain, longing and triumph of the heroes and hep cats and sinners and losers he sings about will tear him apart from the inside.

The emergence of the Gories heralded a new Golden Age of Detroit rock beginning in the late '80s; a renaissance of noise and rustbelt rock which lasts through to today. Formed in 1986 by three Detroit natives, none of whom previously knew how to play an instrument -- Mick Collins, Margaret Ann O'Neill (Peg), and Dan Kroha -- they took their name from a band of the same name which appeared in the "Gidget" series of the late '50s/early '60s. Comprised of two guitarists and a drummer (i.e. no bass), the Gories concocted a primal, raw yet soulful blend of garage punk, culling a wealth of inspiration and cover material from Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, and John Lee Hooker. The three-piece also paid homage to the Keggs and Nick and the Jaguars, two other bass-less bands from Detroit. The Gories began their recorded career in 1987 with two tracks on the Wanghead With Lips compilation It Came From the Garage, Vol. II, the same compilation which featured Nine Pound Hammer (who would go on to become Nashville Pussy). Len Puch, the owner of Wanghead, recorded and released their first album, House Rockin', in 1989. According to legend, these first Gories recordings were executed in a tin shack. For their second album, Alex Chilton of Big Star joined them as producer, recording I Know You Fine, But How You Doin' for the French label New Rose. Throughout this entire period, the band continued to release various 7" singles, including a cover of Spinal Tap's "Give Me Some Money" for the Sub Pop Singles Club. In 1992, Crypt released Outta Here, their last album, and then re-released both House Rockin' and I Know You Fine in 1994.  Since the demise of the Gories, Mick Collins has continued to perform in Blacktop, King Sound Quartet, the Screws, the Dirtbombs, and has contributed to Andre Williams' Silky and The Black Godfather and Speedball Baby's Uptight. Dan Kroha spent some time in Rocket 455, but is primarily known for being one third of another Detroit bass-free rock band, the Demolition Doll-rods. Peg O'Neill recorded a few tracks with '68 Comeback  and is in the Darkest Hours from New Orleans.
