Music Shit / Re: standard books about music/bands

Grit, Noise, & Revolution by David Carson.

Anyone whose interested in the history of Detroit rock n roll should pick this up.  Begins with the blues of John Lee Hooker, travels thru Motown Hitsville USA then on to the early Detroit garage scene to monster rockers Bob Seger and Mitch Ryder ending up with detailed accounts of the MC5 and Stooges era.  Highly recommended!

Exiled Records in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood.  Scored a Billy Synth & the Janitors EP there.  Seriously great shop.

Discourage at 18th & SE Morrison is also a must.  Rare KBD behind the counter.

The B side to Surf's Up is one of the most brilliant sides of any record that I have ever heard.  Brian Wilson at his finest hour.

Here's a great resource in case you wanna read up on train hopping.

I hopped a few times, but not across country or as a way of life.   Just out of boredom.

Music Shit / Re: Death documentary

How uncommon was it for a band to negotiate a major record deal and then have the shit fall through?  Doesn't sound like much of a debacle to me.

Clive Davis: Change the name of your band to something less scary.

Death: No.

Clive: Okay, I guess we won't release this middling, uncommercial record by a bunch of unknown black rock & roll guys from Detroit.  Bye!

Come on.  Why was the "Down in the Street" 7" distributed so poorly?  Why is anything anything?

I don't care either way, it's just that this band's story doesn't strike me as particularly rich.  Music documentaries almost always suck, especially when they're about a minor cult artist.  The arc of the movie will go like this:

1) In 197__, Band X got together in somebody's basement.  Inspired by this and that, working in isolation, they recorded a demo.  It was awesome.

2) They never had a chance; OR, they almost made it, but they didn't.

3) They broke up.  They did drugs or they didn't.  They went on to work in other, shittier bands, or wound up working in computers or some shit.  Some of 'em got married.  One of 'em died.  Or something.

4) Thirty years later, some record collector asshole "discovers" the record, finds one of the band members, they reissue the album, and the band finds a new audience and greater success than they ever enjoyed the first time around.

5) Cue footage of the band's reunion gigs.

It's enough to make a 3-page article in Mojo, but it'll get stretched out to 60 minutes and feature talking head interviews with Thurston Moore and Byron Coley.

I think we've found our director!!!

Actually, it was fried chicken and hot sauce.  David's favorite food...

Much of the stock was lost in a fire.  Their place burnt down in 76 or 77.

I think largely why it did so well was because of the great story behind it.  No?

I agree though, if there isn't enough historical data dug up to use, then it will lack in intensity.

The Count's records always look way more interesting then they sound.

well the first rack on the A side is great, the others are ok, so all in all a sweet pack i'd say esp with the poster of two people on fire. dunno what "SLOOG" means though

How many records did The Count release?   There's one at my work but it has a different photo on the front.  No insert either.
