ok, so why make a bunch of cdrs of the music and give them out to people.
DUUUUHHHHHHH.......
if you gave a CDR to a couple of your friends, would you expect someone to press up a bootleg?
if you received a CDR from someone, would you press up a bootleg without even trying to figure out who made it?
y'all are bitching about psych mafiosos being cagey with their discoveries, while at the same time saying that if you share the info/music, you should expect someone to bootleg it and take credit for discovering it.
so which one is it? share? or don't share?
I just think it's ridiculous for such a high profile in vogue boutique label to be pulling such blatant shit. Anonymous bootlegs are one thing. This is the ole "YOU'VE BEEN BOOTLEGGED. BUT WAIT..." maneuver, which, as we've seen over the past decade, doesn't work out very well.ok, so why make a bunch of cdrs of the music and give them out to people.
I also don't think any of you realize what it takes to "dig" shit up. Would any of you even know where to start finding enough solid Memphis Gospel 78s to fill a CD with? A well collated compilation, like the final 2 BACK FROM THE GRAVEs or STARING DOWN THE BARREL... after all the easy/well known stuff had been unearthed 10-20 years beforehand... "all killer no filler". This doesn't happen magically. Look at all the weak cash-in comps. A good comp takes years of research, networking, massive cash outlay along with a lot of luck digging in the bins. Add to that, the Gospel 78 comp was apparently going to be above board with permission from all of the artists... can you imagine tracking down a bunch of elderly and/or deceased artists and their families, talking each and every one of them into allowing you to use their material... many of whom have either been burned by the music industry. This is a full time job for any of the people who decide to take it on. I would be pissed as hell if someone did zero work and slapped their name on it as if it was theirs.
Honestly, if taking credit wasn't important to MS Recs, why the hell would they attach their name to a bootleg? "Ooh, we're hipster tastemakers, people are paying $50 for our releases like 2 weeks after they come out. Let's do another one!"
