... but then i'm a person who's favourite Wire record is Document & Eyewitness.

Even though I think this is foolish, I respect it.

At least you didn't say "Manscape."

it works as a totally honest live document. i like the loose aggressive vibe. it's as punk as fuck. like the way they antagonise the 'punks' calling out for 12XU & Mr suit.
sure, some of it's difficult listening, but there's some great blasts of noise & songs like 'Keep strumming those fucking guitars' interspersed amongst the purposely obtuse fan baiting weird shit.
all of the Notre Dame 12" 45 rocks but in a non predictable inventive way. great drum sound too.
last of the great Wire records ... besides 'Manscape' of course. ha.

... maybe you should give it another go.

resurrection live lp's
Blurt  - in berlin
3 piece guitar drums & sax / vocalist that make a bigger (syncopated) racket than almost anyone. without going into 'aural ball torture territory'.
Pere Ubu - 390 degrees of simulated stereo
time capsule from the tombs.
Fushitsusha - psf 3-4
a totally rocking album(with harmonica!).
The Fall - totales turns
honest & funny.
Wire - document & eye witness
great audience baiting.
Don Cherry  - live ankara etc 1969
east meets free west zzaj.
The Aints  - s.l.s.q
much better than the more recent the 'original' saints atp stadium rock version.
Culturecide  - year one
houston we have a problem.

can't imagine the velvets being anywhere near as great without her. solo stuff can be pretty interesting, just don't expect v.u.

What you on the fence should be trying is their Pagans cover!
why what is it they do with it that is supposed to get somene off the fence?
i saw 'em play it & it just seemed like a good cover of a great original song, but i don't think they took it anywhere the pagans hadn't, or is it just the fact they do one?

i think they're a good quirky pop punk band. seen 'em live & they were o.k.
but really the fact that they are seen as
Closest band to Wire that we have in these modern times
says more about said modern times than it does about ecsr.

besides the 7" it was on the 'cull' comp lp.
dream lineup yes, but doesn't really come off as you'd hope without the conduction of mark edward smith.

while not being familiar with the AMT catalogue. i have been lucky enough to meet shimura san & see him play in a few different band & can also vouch for his top notchness as both drummer & great guy.

The best one I've seen recently is "Great Australian Albums: The Saints '(I'm) Stranded'". Great early footage of the band, interviews with Chris Bailey, Ed Kuepper, record producer Rod Koe and other Australian musicians from the time. Covers the early years, but then stops right after that album. It made me love the LP all over again even though I never really stopped loving it. Like a Behind the Music doc, but done right.
problem with the saints doc is that they have all that early rare footage & only ever show 30 second snippets of it. which is my problem with so many music docs. they have all this rare footage & only ever show snippets then cut to some boring has been or flavour of the moment crapping on about how much it means to them(yawn)

saying lucas couldn't play 'properly' is not derogatory it just means he didn't have all the 'licks' 'chops' 'n whatnot & that was part of what made his playing of that period so great. really simple stuff played a little sloppily with much gusto. fantastic.

The important thing isn't what his skill level was, it is that he knew what he could and couldnt do and played smartly. He not only played with restraint but recognized that the songs were better when he played that way. Most people, regardless of skill level, would strum away. Maybe he wasn't a "good" guitarist, but he was a good musician.

y'hit the nail on the head there ie: play to your strengths. it's true he wasn't "a good guitarist" but he was fucken great.

seeing as this has now become the X thread ...

i always remember the gigs that went wrong more than the ones that were good & i will always remember the time X played the paddington green hotel sydney '83 (i think) rilen was still at the bar drinking when the band are ready to go on, he tells them loudly to "fuck off ? i don't wanna play" "play without me" "i don't feel like it" etc. so lucas & cafiero get up on stage & started playing. rilen keeps drinking while the roadie is trying to cajole &  sweet talk him to get on stage but he's having none of it & getting louder & more abusive. meanwhile lucas & cafiero are up there playing away & seem generally unfazed by the lack of a bass player. eventually the roadie manages to get rilen on stage & is trying to strap the bass on a very unwilling bassist ?.the band keep playing. after awhile the roadie manages to get the bass strapped on bassist & is trying to get the lead in the jack of the bass, but as soon as he does rilen pulls it out again. this little battle rages on for a minute or two ?  all the while the band keep playing. after about the 10th pulling out of the bass lead roady tapes in in & rilen actually plays a few bars of whatever song they are doing but soon stands on the lead & pulls it out again. by this time the roadie has completely lost his sense of humour, jumps onstage tries to plug it in again & is shouting at bassist. the reluctant bassist takes offence & also takes a swing at roadies head knocking him clean off the stage then promptly falls over himself. the hurt & enraged roadie is clamouring back onstage to kill the belligerent bassist when bassist takes off bass & swings it at roadies head. luckily only a glancing blow ? the band play on, occasionally they glance over & smile at the scene on the other side of the stage. meanwhile the murderous roadie & pissed off drunken bass player are really going at it like a pair of mismatched wrestlers in a grudge match to the death ? the band plays on. the fight is now off the stage & in the crowd where the two are eventually dragged off each other & separated by members of the crowd ? the band start a new song (dipstick i think) without the bloodied bass player. when they finish the song still without any sign of the bass playes return they looked at each other shrug their shoulders & say to the crowd "goodnight folks that's it". that indeed was it. great show !

p.s. i still think eternally yours is better than X-asperations
