Music Shit / Re: Dead Beat Records

When I met Tom, he was like a intense and skinny version of David Cross. Bouncing of the walls and WAAAY into music. He's pretty funny. Still liked my band after we self destructed in front of him onstage (and still managed to sell more merch than the whole tour..?). Funny. This seems to always happen in front of the label guys. Oops. Rich can vouch fer that one.

Also, the turn around on the CDr's being sent and pressed was like 1 & 1/2 months...damn. The Guy is a steamroller with getting product out. Also: a press machine.
There's still promos/reviews showing up in mags like Karrang(sic) and weird Scandinavian metal zines til this day.

The demo's thing is "Love Monster" and it's pretty good. Sounds like MM with a drum machine and lot'sa bedroom trickery. Has a couple of funny jams about D&D and cold meds. Some of the songs went on to the early LP's. Haven't listened to it in a while.
I like the EP and Tab and some of Spine Of God. Strangely, to me, some of the early years starts to sound like Mudhoney?!?!
That ain't a bad thing.

Tom's alright with me....Just got some records from him off of eBay.

Though I'd liked to have had my bands CD on vinyl too...Sniff.

Somehow got a copy of the Numbskull LP. Schweet!
Flipper, it is true. Kinda' feeling a less garagey Art Phag, too.

Les Hulks 7". Not cuttin' it. Like the Cheb Samir thing better.

Godbullies Dog Show LP. !!!

I sent Icki a Gorch Fock CD in the first installment of "Garbage Can'. It did look pretty cool. Here's what he had to say:

"It's 9 a.m. I'm working on my second pot of coffee, tired of NPR and BBC, so I throw on the GORCH FOCK CD (Perverted Son) that's at the top of the pile of shitty CDs and promo material Rich is punishing me with. Right away, bam! Drive Like Jehu intensity jumps out of the tinny speakers on my laptop, grabs my throat and shakes me even more awake. I get hit with heavily layered guitars and a tsunami-size tidal wave of crushing drums (two full drum sets!) with vocals that at times sound like a ghost ship full of pirates...When they're not sounding like an ethereal version of DLJ or Rocket From the Crypt, they drag you into what sounds like a room full of Chris Thompson bands, like Fury, Circus Lupus, Monorchid, Skull Control and Red Eye Legends all playing at the same time, crushing your puny, too-cool-for-school skull with their nerdcore horns. That said, this isn't something I'd necessarily race out and buy and I doubt I'd ever go see them live. I'm a piece of shit snob too. I admit it. But so far the garbage can ain't such a bad place. "

hell,
I like Circus Lupus/RFTC early days too....I think I may have to dig into the other discs. Sadly, no 12"es.

The past couple of years or the label transformed alot.
I got a flyer/advertisement for DeadBeat sitting in front of me right now and the shift was WAAAY drastic.

From 2004:
Taxi - Smut Peddlers - Radio Reelers - Gee Strings -
High Beams - Weaklings - Black Jetts - etc.

From 2005/2006:
Feelers - AluminumKnotEye - Dean Dirg - TSF - DC Snipers - LiveFastDie - Haunted George - etc.

That's a great improvement from what was going down.
At least to me ears.

(Don't get me wrong I got shit taste....but so do a lot of folks here. Who else is gonna' buy up the Godbullies 7" and Feedtime LP's for $1.99 these days?)

I haven't heard the earlier records. I have some online songs and the new stuff. Yeah-the horns seem more overpowering on the earlier tunes (myspace has some). The newer stuff has weird samples and tape loops and shit too...meatier sound.

Also:
I like double drummers.

I'm listening to a LOT of the Gorch Fock on CD. Chuck the Dicks vocals and The Cows song structures in a cement mixer with Buttholes/Scratch Acid "pepperings"....plus a NoMeansNo cover. Grande to my ears.
Supprised noone brings these guys up. If you thought Hank IV was good, but had to be more "out there" or something...give it a shot.

I reviewed a Gorch Fock CD a few years ago and thought it was terrible.  With the amount I've been hearing about them as of late, I'm thinking I might reevaluate them.  Do they have a trombone player?  I seem to remember a trombone and it killing a lot of it for me.

Yeah. A Trombone or something "Whorn"-ish. Just sounds like a great Cows-ish Noise Rock thing to me. Grew up on it. Love it. Not fer everyone, I'm sure.

Big Boys. When it's great...it's great. When it's funk...uh...um.

I hate funk. Most all funk. Some skronky weird shit, yes. But funk....ugh.

Impractical Cockpit. Stereo soundzzz fukked. Slicing Grandpa in a studio? Perhaps.

Dead Moon 2CD set. Wow. I really do like these guys.

Hate Mail Express! Hahahahahahaahaaahaaaaha aa....rad.

MX-80 Sound is my boss....that's how cool I am. Ha.

Strangely, there's very few MX-80 Lp's hitting the floor at Amoeba. A lot of the newer CD's but the early stuff is nil.
Anyone heard the Das Love Boot (early instros.) or the Chinaboise stuff (pre-MX80)?
Those are always there. Dave Mahoney "passed on" over a year ago...pretty sad. But Bruce works in the video section/pricing and Mark (newer drummer-since Dave died) is the big-wig there.
Anyways...happy good guys overall. Tried to get my band to cover Red Stones and Gold (off the Library CD) few years back...wish we did.

Also:
Vic Chestnut stuff. Sad.
Off The Charts : Song Poems soundtrack. Happy.
Soon to be:
Clawhammer "Ramwhale". Scronky.
Les Hulks 7". Loud. Very loud.

Desperately waiting on Sic Alps. They sounded so much like Les Rallizes Desnudes live. This is a huge compliment.

Crazy!
I said that at work when describing it. I thought I was alone on that one.
Royal Trux's early years played thru the Les Raillizes effects catalog.

Mirrors-13 Patient Flowers
...is this Pre-Green Mind? Didn't know it existed.
When they rock out, It's kinda' what I wish the Makers would've went towards instead of...well...whatever the hell they did. I'm making a Best Of from the 2 records.

SPK - Auto Da Fe
...under all the ping, static and scrape, there's some great tunes.
Awesome.

KK & BBQ - What's For Dinner
...I tried. I don't get it. Too goofy. Hate Me.
I like BBQ solo better.

New Jay-Z at work. Ugh. Flow is not "TIGHT". Stumbling all over the beats to me.
