Music Shit / Re: Favorite Make-out album
« on: October 13, 2006, 05:48:12 AM »
I, too, find makeout music extremely intrusive.  I think maybe I don't want to ruin the relationship I have with the record on its own.

Ahh, too many good albums have been ruined by the relationships that they inevitably get attached to.

I'm not sure about my favorite make out album.  I've found that CDs seem to work a little better because you don't have to flip 'em.  I used to put on whatever I felt like listening to at that moment, like in high school my girlfriend and I would make out to the Brother Inferior LP all the time.  Now, I think I probably reach for indie rock, because it just fits the mood.  Belle and Sebastian works well.  As you can see, I'm one of those nice guy weenies who doesn't mind just making out.  Hell, I'm at work right now wearing a collared shirt under a V-neck sweater, lookin' like a rejected member of Saves The Day.

As far as going back to making out, instead of just skipping straight to doing it, it's a little tricky.  The best way to achieve it is to find someone who's innocent and inexperienced.  It gives you a chance to step back and set the pace yourself.  I'm in this position right now and I love it.  Do I miss having sex?  Sometimes.  But, I'm much more happy to be with an awesome girl, having a really awesome balanced relationship.

Oh my god, am I too white bread* for this board?

*As a side note, I only eat whole wheat bread.

Sorry, I went with Lou Reed on this one.  I'll keep my eyes open for potential quotes though.  Haha.

I did the speech for a 100 level speech class.  I've always been intrigued by the mythical figure that is Lester Bangs, but never took the time to read his stuff.  Now that I did the presentation, I feel the need to actually read his stuff...Meltzer too.

Today when I did my speech on rock criticism, the eyes were buggin'.

I had a power point presentation and the animations fucked up, so the Lester Bangs slide had "Last of the White Niggers" plastered up on the huge screen for quite a few minutes.  People's eyes started bugging as soon as they saw it on the screen.  It was awesome.

Then I told some old Vom stories that I'm not sure how true they were.  Whatever, it made my topic entertaining.

Maybe I should have just done a speech about message board personalities.  Hmm...I haven't turned in an outline, so I could still do it.  Haha.

It's this late in the game so it's obvious that my speech is going to suck.  The best part is that we're taping these speeches so we can do a self critique.  She really expects me to sit through 7 minutes of myself talking on DVD?  That'll be rough.

If I can't figure out the origins in time I'll just fake it.  It's not like anyone will notice or care.  So in the end, it might end up getting credited to Soriano afterall.  Haha.

It's something like "Who wants to be a rock critic anyway."  I was thinking it was Lou Reed.

Anyone know who and what the actual quote is?  Where it's from?

I've got an informative speech due tomorrow and I'm doing it on rock critics.

October 15th, 2006 @ Nihilist Gallery in Chicago, IL w/ Binges, Number None

I emailed them months ago about doing a Wisconsin show and got no reply.  So now they're playing in Chicago on a night where I have plans already.  Awesome.

Dan - it was cool to see you & some other Milwaukee folks make it up. It was actually a fairly laid back night there, not packed and not crazy or anything. The Birthday Suits show was like a shitstorm - if felt more like a basement show or something. People were drunk and "moshing" and rolling around and passing bodies and freaking out. There are plenty good shows at the Main Stage, but truthfully, most of the bands come through Milwaukee on the way, so you wouldn't be seeing anyone that wasn't already in your back yard or gonna be there the next night. You guys are always welcome up here, and if you need a place to stay, that can usually be arranged.

We probably would have taken you up on the place to stay, if I hadn't had to be back to Milwaukee for family stuff.

The Birthday Suits show a couple weeks back was amazing!

Who else played that show?  I'm actually not that into the Birthday Suits though.  I saw 'em at the Commons, and I just wasn't that into it.  Then again, this was the same day I saw Clockcleaner for the first time.  And since they're one of my favorite bands on the planet, most everything would pale in comparison.

Tyvek were good and funny looking. A weird conglomeration of band-mates. Cheveu wasn't all that crazy. They were good but not what I was expecting. Pink Reason were awesome!

I'm with you on this one.  People lead me to believe that Cheveu was kinda crazy, but they were pretty tame.  I'm not saying they weren't good and enjoyable, they just weren't up to the imaginary bar everyone had set in my brain.

Pink Reason was freakin' great.  The songs coming out on the Trick Knee 7" are amazing.  Can't wait for the LP!

Tyvek were great.  They stood up to the hype and were super nice dudes to boot.

Hue Blanc...love those guys, but I left for Milwaukee.  There's nothing like driving back 2 hours with no one else awake and you yourself are amazingly tired.  If that skunk and deer hadn't ran out in front of me I probably would have fallen asleep.

Damn, if there were more Green Bay shows that good I'd make the trip more often.

Biggest dissappointment of the day:  My non-finds at Exclusive.  It was pretty hohum.  I used to find piles of stuff.  Maybe it's just that I'm pickier.  I also heard that they aren't letting Tom order as much stuff.  They had the Huew Blanc 7" for $6. $6?!?  Can someone explain that one to me?

I used to love Screeching Weasel.  When they did those two shows back in 2000, I was front and center the second day.  At the time it was great, but now that I think about it, it was uneventful except the fact that it was a band I loved at the time playing songs I loved...but they were pretty uneventful on stage.

Wow, I just remebered that I wrote an 8 page compare/constrast paper on the albums of Screeching Weasel my freshman year of college.  There goes any hopes I had for scene points.

Do I listen to Screeching Weasel these days?  Not really.  Once every year or so I'll bust out an album, but I've gort those songs so ingrained in my memory that I don't really need to hear 'em anymore.

Is Boogada a good album?  Yeah, it's just not a sound I dabble in too often anymore.  Hell, I don't even listen to the Ramones.

I really need to hear this.  I'm a big fan of the Ponys and I'm not gonna hide anything...I like a decent amount of indie rock.

By the way that everyone was not liking it for being too indie pretty much sealed my fate of liking it.

Seriously - Pink Reason, Cheveau, Hue Blanc & Tyvek (who put out my favorite single this year) on Saturday - I can't fucking wait!!!

The more I think about this show, the more I contemplate making the trip up from Milwaukee...and that doesn't happen anymore...ever.  I'm not doing it alone though.  Let's get a Milwaukee group together and make the treck.

Damn.  I should be there.  Free show...sounds good to me.  I'm sure I'll end up donating something cos I'm a nice guy.  Plus I've never been to Bucketworks and it's always cool to go somewhere new for shows.

During my life up to this point, age 24, nobody I have known for any extended period of time has been into the music that I am into. I've always made good friends with a lot people over the years and friendships that have lasted a long time and it has nothing to do with musical taste. I don't consider myself some record snob and rarely do I like to get into arguments over what music is better and the reasons why. If there is some music a friend is playing that I don't like, I keep my mouth shut, cause if someone is gonna say something about what I like to hear, then they can fuck off.

I think it boils down to the fact that it would be really cool to have a girl that was cool and at the same time likes the music we like without pretending for the sake of being around you.

I've avoided a lot of potentional relationships because of that too.

When I'm hanging out with someone who likes music that I think is bad I like to ask why they like it.  It's intriuging to find out their reasoning for liking it.  I'm sure that because of this process I've been swayed on bands' merits.  But it can also make you think less of a person when they give you some ultra lame response.  Haha.  It's a strong power if you choose to use it.

As far as dating someone with similar music taste, I tried it once.  But we would end up arguing because she'd listen to some band that I thought totally blew and I'd get all annoyed.  Sometimes I'd rather a girl be listening to some bad radio rock than a bad punk band because it's just on such a different level that it doesn't really phase me.  Like if they're listening to punk they're close...but then they listen to crap.  So it get your hopes up, only to let you down.

My present girlfriend seems to really like the bands I listen to, so that's really cool.  But she doesn't actively seek all of it out, so I think that's where we avoid problems.  'Cause once you start listening to some crappy band and then criticize my taste...that's when it all blows up.
