the original east side records in Tempe (which still exists albeit on a different side of town but is still the best store in that city), asking Mike what velvets record to start with and getting the self titled one, which probably started it all, also when he incoherently told a 14 year-old me a story of playing a blacked-out game of pick up with the sun city girls (a band I hadn't heard at the time). mike is still one of the best and anytime I go in he has some fucked up phoenix lore to spit out

I would listen to my tape collection (pretty big) more often if I could score an old Sony Walkman that worked well. I just never run into them.

can't you find these literally anywhere ? i feel like i run into a few a week

The term "Cassette Culture" is a bit overblown. The cassette thing is a hobby that will soon fizzle. They are too complicated, prone to malfunction, and expensive- yes expensive. The best thing about cassettes back in the day was that they were dirt cheap, now I'm seeing $8 demo tapes.

I mean, it's true that tapes are more expensive on average nowadays but I don't think that necessarily means that cassette culture is gonna fizzle out anytime soon...it'll just continue to transform and mutate like it has for the past forty years or whatever...obviously its economically available and accessible but there is also the whole factor of how ingrained tapes are to underground aesthetics and etc...

after all, it is

"the people's format"

So a white band or artist can't put a black face on their record artwork or t-shirts? Thanks for the update on that moral conundrum. What if he'd used a pic of Sly Stone, his band was multiracial?

Uh, look at the big ol' quote then contextualize that its a Morrissey shirt ya dummy
