Non-Music Shit / Letha & Dan Melchior need your help
« on: January 17, 2011, 09:38:52 AM »
Letha Melchior Rodman Cancer Fund

As you probably know, the life of a musician playing independent music is not a lucrative one. So when one hits a snag in life that taps the resources and makes working an outside job impossible, times get really hard. This is where Dan and Letha Melchior find themselves right now. You know Dan as one of the best underground rock & roll songwriters around. He's released records on labels such as In the Red, Hangman, S.S., Siltbreeze, Daggerman and others, and played with his bands the Broke Review and Das Menace, as well as Billy Childish and Holly Golightly. Letha is a member of Das Menace and contributes to a lot of Dan's record jacket art/design, not to mention Dan's partner.

A few months ago Letha was diagnosed with cancer and since then she's been in a pretty hard fight, requiring some operations and much treatment. She's been unable to work. Dan's role as her caretaker has taken him out of the work force. Letha has basic medical insurance but that really doesn't mean a whole lot in the USA. Debt is piling up. And the state that they live in, North Carolina, doesn't offer much in the way of aid. Dan and Letha need our help.

Independent of Dan and Letha, we are asking people to help them out. The Melchior name has given us a whole lot of great music; now it is time to give a little back. We know times are hard for a lot of people, so we are asking that you give what you can afford. Please know that the money donated to Dan and Letha goes directly to them via their paypal account. New S.S. stuff in now!  http://s-srecords.com

Duchess of Saigon s/t LP $13
Formed in 2001, the Duchess of Saigon were Mary and Richard. Two artists, they met at UC Davis, started seeing each other and then formed a band. Though Richard had been in a handful of Sacramento bands (Rick & the Young Rogues, Sir & the Young Men), Duchess was Mary's first band. She was handed the drum duties...and good thing, too! Because she was unencumbered by formal lessons, Mary developed a unique drumming style in which she would keep the beat with her feet and play the melody with her hands. The unconventional approach to percussion, as well as her ethereal backing vocals, gave Richard's VU-influenced garage-pop songs an excellent twist. Byron Coley of The Wire likened them to the Carpenters if played by the Shaggs.
------The first time I saw Duchess of Saigon, they were horrible. Just a goddamn mess of a band. However, the second time, six months later, they convinced me they were the best band in town and I hurriedly asked them if I could put out a record. That record is Easter Queen. We pressed 300, it finally went out of print. Another Sacramento label, Plastic Idol, put out their second seven inch. It is as good as the first.
------The Duchess were working on an album, but recording and equipment problems kept dragging the project on. Mary, frustrated with her drumming, lost interest and quit. About a year later, both Mary and Richard picked up and moved to Florida and then to Detroit. Fall of 2010, I was going through the S.S. archives and came upon a tape from the 2005 abandoned album sessions. Wow! Time has been very, very good to the Duchess of Saigon! I bumped into Richard when he was visiting Sacramento and proposed to put out a limited pressing of unreleased Duchess songs. He said, "Go for it!" and here it is!
------This limited edition contains 16 songs culled from sessions recorded by Chris Woodhouse from 2002 to 2005, every one of them as good as anything on the Duchess of Saigon's two aforementioned EPs. Sleeve designed and screened by S.S.
------300 pressed. (SS058) Sound samples here

Sperm Wails Lady Chatterley 7" $5
Back in 1986 a few guys got together in London-town in order to form a band. They ran an ad in the NME and found themselves a singer. They went through a couple drummers, played a bunch of gigs, released a few records, and called it quits. The band was forgotten by all but fans, friends, and a few music freaks. Could be any number of bands from the late-1980s, an unfairly maligned era of underground music. Fortunately, this band had some live footage that made it to the internet...and that live clip made tens of thousands of music fans say "Guh-guh-guh-GAH!" ----The band is the Sperm Wails. While prominent in England's "Camden Noise-core Scene" and having toured with the legendary My Bloody Valentine, the Wail's "sister band," the SW didn't get much of a listen outside of Merry 'Ol. Their three records ("Boy Hairdresser" 12", "Carry-On" 7", and "Grim/Stroke" flexi disc) were self-released and never got the run they deserved. And as far as I know, they never made their way off of Monkey Island. ---If you would have asked the S.S. Records brain trust about the Sperm Wails, you would have gotten a blank stare. That is until the "Lady Chatterley" surfaced. Propulsive punk rock with post-punk chops and one hell of an edge, "Lady C." showed a band that could have held their own to any of the era's heavyweights (Big Black, UT, Sonic Youth, etc.). S.S. figured "Gotta have record." Problem was finding it. "Lady C." had been released but in short run as a freebie with some obscure fanzine. The song was crammed on the record with three tunes by others and that was not right! Former members of the band were tracked down and begged for the right to release "Lady Chatterley" in proper form, as the A-side of a 7". After much searching some Wails dug up an unreleased gem called "Mr. Wonderful," a twisted piece of Fall-pop. And that we called the B-side. ---The Sperm Wails broke up in 1989. Members remained active in London's music scene, playing in bands like Spectreman and The London Dirthole Company. Currently, a couple former Sperm Wailers are playing in the band Blowhole.
----500 pressed. (SS051) Check out the video!

Los Llamarada The Restless Light 7" $5
----It's been a couple years and some since the world has heard from Los Llamarada. Aside from some emails back and forth describing the deterioration of Llamarada's hometown, Monterrey, under siege in the Drug War, I hadn't heard from out friends down south. Then in Fall 2010 I received nine cassette tapes full of Llamarada recordings, pretty much most of the stuff they'd been working on over the last two years. I spent the next few days going through them, quickly realizing that there was more material than an album could handle. So Llamarada and I plucked out a couple of killers for a 7" (and started working on the other cuts for a full length later in 2011).
----To start, Llamarada gives us their jump on "Rezo Por Voz", a classic by Argentinian rock legends Luis Alberto Spinetta and Charly Garcia. In the Llamarada way, what you hear of "Rezo Por Voz" in "The Restless Light" are hints and dustings of the original. This is no straight cover, but a psych punk romp of claustrophobic proportions.
----Flip the single over and we have "A Current," an original taut and moody, a guitar drones spaghetti western style over a tense plain. Drop this into the opening scene in El Topo and I wouldn't complain. Cover art by Herla Alarcon.

Plus FM-BX Society Tape 001 LP (under 100 left), Circle Pit 7", Niche Homo zine, Es Chaos Is Botschaft V2 LP, Analog Africa's newest comp, Telephone Callers 7", Stuffs comp, and used stuff by Toiling Midgets, Roy Acuff, Headhunters, UK Subs, etc.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / S.S. Records Class of 2010
« on: December 17, 2010, 04:04:32 PM »
Here is a list of the records released on the S.S. label in 2010. All of it is still available at http://s-srecords.com and (some) through Goner, Florida's Dying, Revolver/Midheaven, Forced Exposure, Fusetron and various stores around the world.

Nothing People Soft Crash LP
The third album by our Orland quartet get a bit spacey and space rock. My favorite of theirs.

Chinese Restaurants River of Shit 7" & Summer Romance 7"
Two records from NYC group and Mattin cohorts, who have a deep understanding of what made bands like Bunnybrains and labels like Blackjack great.

Ozzie Parabolic Rock 2LP
Retrospective of Sacramento 70s/early 80s band Ozzie, who had their feet in glam, proto-punk, hard rock & new wave. Hailed by many as the archival release of the year.

A Frames 333 3LP
...and if Ozzie's wasn't the "archival release of the year" for you, this one probably was. Three albums comping the singles, outtakes and demos of S.S. Records' signature band.

Banque Allemande Eins, Zwei LP
Hiding out in the hinterlands of Berlin, this German trio blew me away with their relentless guitar attack and singular obsession with driving a riff through yr skull. One of the biggest surprises of the year.

Dan Melchior und das Menace 'Visionary Pangs' LP
I think by now no one questions that Dan is one of the best songwriters going. With this album no one should be surprised he rules on guitar as well. Another gem in Dan's lengthy discog.

FM-BX Society Tape 001 LP
Plucked from obscurity comes the first vinyl release of a fantastic DIY tape from 1981 featuring The Topplers, Isolation Ward, and Unit 4.

All of these are available at s-srecords.com

And now on to 2011! If you've been with S.S. from the start than you will know that the label's first release, the A Frames' "Plastica" 45, came out in 2001. That mean that in 2011, S.S. Records turns ten years old. We are working up a celebration of sorts that I'll clue you in on later. I also figured that year ten was a good time to launch another label, to compliment S.S.. It's no secret that I have a thing for international music, especially sounds that are challenging and unique to my ears. Every once in a while titles appear in the mail order catalog and I try to push great used stuff on you. Well, I decided to start Sol Re Rol Records, a label dedicated to international sounds. The first release is a 1972 recording by the legendary Master Musicians of Jajouka. Look for that in the Spring.

As far as forthcoming S.S. titles: Early 2011 will see 7"s by Los Llamarada and the Sperm Wails, as well as an album by Duchess of Saigon. I was hoping to get these out before the new year, but things don't move as fast as I'd like sometimes! S.S. will also be putting out the first vinyl version of Sightings' "Michigan Haters" LP, one of their best albums. After a couple years wait, there will be a new LP by Mexico's Los Llamarada, a dark masterpiece which serves as a surreal soundtrack to life under the H1N1 flu scare and Mexican drug war. The Neil Goedhals record will come out in 2011 and I hope the KOOS album will get back on track. And of course there are a dozen or so things in the works, getting talked about, etc.

For sale:

Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum LP
Blue Cheer - Outside Inside LP

Both are original US pressings on Philips. Both have some condition issues. But both are rock & roll classics, must haves, etc.

Vincebus: The vinyl is solid VG+. Minor wear. Plays fine. The condition issues are with the sleeve which has small splits at top and bottom toward mouth of jacket. There is also a 3 inch closed tear at the back, which can be repaired with careful gluing (but I will leave that up to you). These splits are unfortunate as otherwise this sleeve would be M-.

Outside Inside: Record is VG. Marks and surface noise but plays through fine. This is not the kind of music that gets ruined by some surface noise! The sleeve is water damaged. Tears at bottom, staining, mildew marks on inside. But there is no mildew - that was killed off - and the sleeve has no moisture in it.

You can have both postpaid for

Krysmopompas  Heute Schlafen - Morgan Aufwachen 2LP $16
Surprise! Surprise! This gem has been out of print for a couple years and technically still is. However, I just got a return from a distro and have fifteen copies on hand. In case you missed this first time around: Krysmopompas are from Berlin and at the time of this release pretty much unknown. As with Banque Allemande, them being unheard is insane. They are a perfect combo of early Wire, Kraut new wave, DIY post punk, etc. This wound up on quite a few 2008 "best of" lists and is a title I often get requests for.  (SS038)

FM-BX Society Tape 001 LP $12
...S.S. Records is pleased to present the first vinyl edition of the FM-BX Society Tape 0011. Originally released in 1981 on only cassette, with a limited run of 200, FM-BX 001 was the first in a series of compilation tapes released by the staff of a radio station in Brussels, Belgium. Needless to say, not many tapes made it around, and very few survive today. I'd say that is a shame but with this vinyl release, the word will get out about the bands on this tape, albeit a few decades after its initial release!
...FM-BX 001 features three bands, two from Belgium, one from Scotland. The Belgium bands are Isolation Ward and Unit 4. Isolation Ward are known in underground synth collector circles, as they had a bit of a run after their debut on this release. Bleak and futuristic, Isolation Ward fuse post punk with early 80s synth sounds and a DIY approach.
...The stars of FM-BX are the all-woman foursome Unit 4. Little is known about the band or their current whereabouts. No problem because their music is all you need to tell you that they had something special going. By their sound, the influences are obvious: Kleenex, Delta 5, and the Raincoats all reverberate here though less "slick" than any of those bands. Unit 4's aesthetics are more akin to the Petticoats and, at times, the Shaggs. Fans of current day lady singers Titmachine and the Dead Clodettes will dig. This is truly wonderful punk rock.
...From Scotland comes The Topplers. If the name sounds familiar, it is doubtful that it is because of the band. One of the Topplers is a guy named Allan Henry, who runs the excellent DIY label Topplers Records. In fact, it is Allan who turned me on to FM-BX to begin with. His band The Topplers? Great stuff. Teens with an ear towards the TV Personalities, The Times, and Subway Sect. They only existed for a couple years but wound up on this tape and, as a result, with an opening slot for Golden Earing! These are the only recordings that exist. Had they come out at the time on a 7"s, I have no doubt DIY collectors would be fighting over copies.
...500 pressed on vinyl, housed in a sleeve cobbled together from the original cassette release. Brief liner notes by The Topplers' Allan Henry. (SS056)
