Music Shit / KDEE
« on: November 26, 2013, 11:51:55 AM »
Probably the best thing about Sacramento is KDEE, a radio station supported by the Black Chamber of Commerce. They bill themselves as Music for Adults. It is wall to wall commercial free 70s/80s soul, funk, electro, early rap, new jack, etc. And you can stream it. http://www.mainstreamnetwork.com/listen/player.asp?station=kdee-fm&

If I might add.... please do, Sir, you are on a roll....the WORST thing about you feebs asking Where Should I Start... is that you arent asking because you are interested in buying a fucking record. You want to know where to start when you go to youtube. That is fucking pathetic - lazy and lame.

hey scott, can you defend this thread for me in your inimitable style, or am i totally fucked?

Yes & no. I dont have time to wax poetic about Heart. They are good up to a point. They probably are the best of their era at ripping off Led Zep II & III and that is when Heart is at their best. Can't listen to an album all the way through because eventually after a nice rocker or two or some sublimely sleazy number like Magic Man they go into drippy ballads and I am lost.

And, seriously, I see absolutely nothing good in Styx. Nothing. The penultimate in middle brow pretension, only topped by Rush, which I am sure some of you dumbshits like as well. And spare me the pap about the first Rush album and how it rocks and blah blah blah blah dogshit. You fuckers are asking for advise on Saccharine Trust, for christ sake, a bad whose usefulness ended almost as soon as it began. "Where do I start at....." For christ sake, get a fucking pair and risk a few minutes of your life and dive into it blind. Dont dismiss something after first listen and plow on. Oh and how about START AT THE FUCKING BEGINNING?  I know it is lame to play the "termbo was much better in the days of yore" partially because this forum was never as good as it seemed at the time and partially because Nanne Tepper is dead BUT Termbo was much better in the days of yore because too many of you participants are fucking candy asses in your music tastes and are about as entertaining as the heel of a shoe. Fuck you all. Have a good Thanksgiving.

Non-Music Shit / Re: LP Mailers
« on: November 24, 2013, 07:58:24 PM »
Actually, my friend Davy from Weird Forest and I were taken by Dusty Groove's mailers, which are rectangular. Independently of each other, we tried to get a source from DG but got no answer. Davy took one of there boxes to a few box companies in town and one of them bit. We redesigned it a little and the box company started custom making them for us. Because they are local shipping to us is free which makes the price around the same as bulk 12.5" squares shipped from Uline. However we get them made in batches of 1000 - 2000 and the box place doesnt keep any on hand. Made to order only. I've brokered some for a few people but it has been batches of 500+ and the people have had to foot the bill for cross country shipping. If anyone is interested in 500 or more, they can contact me via email. Or I would suggest taking one of our boxes or Dusty Groove's to the local box place and see what they can do. If you are going through at least a couple thousand a year, it might be worth it. I used to get complaints about bumped corners and sides when I used standard mailers, even through I would pack with extra cardboard. I havent gotten a complaint in the four years I've been using these things.

....and another thing. Before Styx was Styx they were TW4 and before that The Tradewinds. The Tradewinds were a frat/garage band with some Byrds-like sounds, typical mid 60s teen stuff. TW4 was late 60s and sounded  like The Litter but heavier. Both bands recorded but didnt release anything. However when Styx started turning out hits, one of those gray-area labels like Upfront or Track released a pre-Styx LP (kinda like the Byrds' Pre-Flyte) of some recordings called TW4 - The River to Styx, the "Styx" taking up half the record cover. It was immediately taken of the market but not impossible to find. It is as good as any one of those lost hard rock/psych "collector classics" that Akarma used to boot. More important is it really gives you insight into Styx, kinda like how you can hear the roots of ELO in The Move. Again, worth a listen.

Also I should mention that right after their first album Styx started fucking around with a kinda art rock/prog/free jazz  and came up with a sound that was very much like the second Soft Machine album, maybe a little more dainty but in a good way. Legend goes that they turned a session into their label and were told to get back to the rock. The session never leaked and the tapes were said to be destroyed. However there is a live bootleg of the stuff, a double album on TMOQ called Life At The Canadian Ramparts. It is near impossible to find but it turns up on youtube every six months (only to be immediately taken down by Styx's management). Very worth seeking out, if only for the pleasure of thinking "That's Styx????

okay, some of you are gonna think i am crazy, but there will be those of you who are in the know on this one.  i think it is past time that Styx gets another go over. much like the BeeGees and ELO, Styx whole career is judged on some horrible later albums and bad stylists. That really isnt fair. If Jeff Lynne was held accountable for all his hair or life mistakes like this
e
we'd never listen to classics such as ELO II. Likewise with the BeeGees disco phase and Barry Gibb's bear-like presence. Sure, there is no excuse for the fashion sense of dennis de young, but musically the guy is a genius. go back and listen to the early records on Wooden Nickel. They might be the only band to successfully bridge the 70s power pop & prog aesthetics. The Serpent is Rising is a ground breaking record, a classic that should sit next to Hawkwind's Doremi Faso Latido and Guru Guru's Hinten as to how psych-infused art rock should be done. One would think that Styx's jump from the indie Wooden Nickel to A&M would be their death but all it meant was that they refined their craft, much like Rundgren's shift from Nazz to Runt.  The Grand Illusion is nothing less than a masterpiece. Pieces of 8 would be consider a masterpiece by another band. Both records combine pretty high concept songwriting with the purest Raspberries style pop.  Listened to without the baggage and 20 years down the road and you have to agree that these records are remarkable.  I'll be the first to admit that Paradise Theater stunk and Killroy is nothing less than embarrassing but those dont wipe away the fantasticness that preceded them. you stupid motherfuckers need to give styx another chance.

The Giants are spending money like drunken sailors. Lincecum for 17.5M a year. Then again this is the same team who just gave 12M to a 37 year old left handed specialist coming out of the bullpen to throw another whopping 35IP next season. The Lincecum, Pence, Affedlt, J. Lopez, and even the Huddy deal are all bad but the cherry on top would be signing Arroyo to a 3 year deal.

I hate the "too much money"/overpaid argument. Overpay in relation to what? What you or I get paid? If you have the money, what is a ten million here or there? The Giants have money to burn. Their rivals down south burn money. The Sox overpay. The Yankees are a combo cash machine/money furnace.  Better to spend the money on players than mgmt/ownership pocketing it. Really, what would you rather have: A team throwing money at players and having a chance to succeed or an owner walking away with the money and the team in the basement? Of course, the A's and the Yanks prove that money doesnt mean success, but it does mean that mgmt is at least attempt to field a decent team. Forget the money, look at the years. Lincecum is a two year deal and he finished the second half of last season good. His strikeouts have remained steady. If he adjust and thrives, great. If he doesnt it is two years. Huddy is three. Lopez is three. What is Pence, four, five? He is a position player and he isnt Aaron Rowand. That is reasonable. If you are talking about signing guys other than Posey for 6+ years, that is a bad deal. Not based on money, but on time. Christ, Vinnie, name me the three worst things about Bus mgmt and I bet Not Willing To Spend.

Ha! And they reviewed the two songs on soundcloud, not the LP.

Personally, I'll go with the google translation of the NAT Recs blurb on Life Stinks
