Music Shit / Boston's Legendary Punk Band La Peste
« on: September 29, 2010, 07:14:35 AM »

Boston's Legendary Punk Band La Peste

Just finished cutting video of the legendary Boston punk band La Peste. La Peste ruled the punk scene in Boston from 1979-82, their live shows packed clubs across town from Cantones to the Rat.

The punk power trio also caught the ear of pioneer BBC DJ John Peel. After his passing a few years back, La Peste?s 7? vinyl of ?Better Off Dead? turned up in John?s favorite music box.

The new cut of the La Peste live audio and video footage captures the buzz saw energy of the band, while providing an inside look at the punk nightclub and loft space scene that was La Peste?s domain. You can watch a sample of the video by following this link:

First look back at la peste with live video of "I Don't Want to Die in My Sleep Tonight".
The video was shot at the Paradise Club in Boston 1979 and features the high energy audio from the Rat Rumble.

Looks pretty fresh for 1979:

Across the pond posted Ian Curtis and Joy Division filmed live in London 1979. Nice versions of "Live Transmission" & "She's Lost Control"

Happy Post-Saint Patrick?s Day!

If your into the hair of dog that bit you, why not raise a pint, kick back, relax and check out the edit I just completed of The Cure?s live video ?Three Imaginary Boys? It was filmed in Boston in 1980 and has been sitting in the can since then. The Cure were on their first US Tour and played a small club called the Underground. The place held just over a hundred or so people. It was also Robert Smith?s 21st birthday. So raise another pint cause he?s going to be 50 next month?.YIKES!!

First time view of ?Three Imaginary Boys? here:

http://www.kinodv.net/movies/moviepages/KinoMonthlyFeature.html

Also posted a video from The Thompson Twins 1983 live show at The Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool England. This is pretty good version of ?In the Name of Love? The Twins were a bit
popish but they certainly had an impact on the New Wave edge during the 80?s. Besides always loved the head of hair on Alannah Currie.

Check out ?In the Name of Love? in the Archive Portal here:

Music Shit / New Vids up @ KINODV: la peste and X-Ray Spex 1978-79
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:50:45 AM »

In the late 70's La Peste ruled Boston as one of the most dynamic and creative punk bands.  The power trio packed them in to local punk venues like the Rat, Cantones, and the Paradise.  Here is a video of ?Spy Master? filmed in Boston 1979:

http://www.kinodv.net/movies/moviepages/KinoMonthlyFeature.html

John Peel the famous English DJ who kept a battered wooden box with his precious selection of 7-inch singles that meant more to him then any others did. In that box was La Peste's "Better Off Dead" You can see  "Better Off Dead" at KINODV here:

http://www.kinodv.net/movies/archive/lapeste_bod.html

Another Peel favorite was X-Ray Spex fronted by main muse Poly Styrene. X-Ray Spex was one of the most unique and inventive groups of the British punk era. Check out the clip of ?Warrior in Woolworths? filmed at the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1978:

New Live Vids up @ KINODV: Mission of Burma and James Chance and The Contortions

Happy New Year?..It?s gotta be better than the last one!!!

First new live video for 1999 is Mission of Burma from the Underground Show in 1980. ?Devotion? this has been re-cut for the Matador Records release of The Definitive Editions. The 1980 show also featured The Cure that night.  The Cure were obviously impressed with Burma as Robert Smith dedicated one of their songs to them

Watch "Devotion" here:

Hailing and wailing from NYC is James Chance and The Contortions.
This clip comes from a show at Max?s Kansas City filmed in 1979.
Chance is at his snotty best here with his performance of  ?I Can?t Stand Myself?. When it came to James Chance you either liked him or hated him.

There was no in between:

Human Sexual Response played at the Streets club in Boston 1982.
The evening was filmed with three Ikegami cameras and recorded with a remote 24 track truck. The result was about 55 minutes of high energy live performance. The footage was digitally encoded 10 years ago and has recently been cut in preparation for a 12 song DVD to be released early next year. Here is a sample from that body of work. ?Southern Exposure? can be seen here:

As a companion to HSR  you can take a look at the pride of Athens Georgia the B-52?s performing ?Dance This Mess Around?. From Folk roots to the Next?.. just Add It Up When Things Go Wrong

Robin Lane with early roots in the Los Angles folk music scene moved east  and eventually to Cambridge in 1978. There the Chartbusters were formed with Asa Brebner, Leroy Radcliffe, Scott Raerenwad, and Tim Jackson. In the midst of the punk and new wave scene, the music with Robin Lane & The Chartbusters  took on a new edge.

Watch Robin Lane and the Chartbusters live video from 1979  ?When Things Go Wrong? here:

The Violent Femmes in the early 80?s played the coffee house and street corner scene. Their music was a cross between American folk music and punk rock. Band members Brian Ritchie, Victor DeLorez, and lead vocalist
Gordon Gano helped define the idea of folk punk.
