And you also have the rare situation where a landlord let you take over a rent controlled apartment after the master tenant had moved out. Very few landlords in SF are willing to do that, when they could have easily cleared out the place and rented it for 2-3x as much.

And the ridiculous 'oakland is a dump, sf is so cool' argument.
Each side of the bay has it's good and bad points. People will always argue that their side is way better.
Whatever. Pick the side that makes the most sense for you (what you can afford, where you're going to work, what you want to do with your nightlife), and fuck what everyone else says.
