For whatever it is worth I have seen Jason reach for the gong on a record of a band by a friend of mine.  It was a great, hilarious moment.
haha...can't remember what that was...well, don't feel too bad, I gong friends of mine on a near-daily basis seemingly.
Everyone here has equal veto power, so if an album ever gets played through all the way it's a minor miracle.

Was hoping more people would chime in on "worst CT releases"...worst of lists are always better/funnier than boring best ofs. Or I think so at least.

Anyone ever do a booth at this in years past? I'm debating if it would be worth it or not. There are already a lot of record stores in Louisville but maybe if I go super specific and bring only, say, reggae records.

Polling the room: what was the best CT release? What was the absolute worst? I'm mostly ignorant to the label.
My favorites have been Soft Moon, Naomi Punk and EZTV. This is not considering reissues of course.
Worst: I don't know...working in a record store, I've heard A LOT over the years, and none of it has made me rush for the gong but there are certainly many sort of anonymous NYC Beach/Nothing sort of bands. They've put out a lot of music, so....like it or not, they've come to define a kind of sound/era like late 80s SST or something.

"Occasional slinky groove" is a very quick & easy way to say "not all hardcore bash all the time." ie. there's a little bit of rock n' roll (or you could call it sex?). Like, you can kinda dance to some of the songs. Not just, uhhh, mosh.
Ok, cool. As long as there's no 5-string fretless I've got an open mind.

Should not be allowed to call your band Kaleidoscope, particularly if you have any kind of psych element. Also this scares me:
and occasional slinky groove.
That said, I like the associated bands. Would like to hear more. Any clips available anywhere?

I'm just now reading the NYT story/obit on OM. And two things jump out to me:
Says their sales are half their peak of 3.1 mil, so 1.55 million. Knowing what my annual sales are, and given how much bigger NYC is compared to me....yeah, their sales "should" be a WAY more if the scale between us is equivalent. Given their rent and that they're paying more or less the same wholesale for everything as I am, anyone can see this was not going to last much longer.

So, the problem isn't the format or the biz model, the problem is New York City (as usual). I blame Trump.

Also, this:
"?The energy of music obviously has moved out of a place like this,? said Mr. Madell, who admitted that CDs now look ?like floppy disks? to him."

Sounds like the dude was just done with it, his heart is not in it. If that's his attitude, time to move on. With all due respect, it's sort of the exact opposite of how I feel.

I guess I count myself fortunate that I started my store in the mid-00s instead of 10 years earlier...the wheels had already fallen off, started in shitsville, so it's all upward to me.

Would like to get this as well. I live in the states, are there any shops/distros that have it still?
I have two copies in stock at the moment. Give me/us a call (812) 339-2574 or email jason@landlockedmusic.com.
$16 total, shipping included.

Wanted to jump in the ring here cause that's just the kind of guy I am...

OM closing is really sad news to me. They're a marquee indie store, symbolically very important. I've been on their mailing list since, I don't even know, late 90s...a long time. Discovered tons of great music reading it. I checked it every week to make sure I wasn't missing something I should stock at my store. Every time I went to NYC I'd make a point to go there. Great store.

That said, we shouldn't read too much into its closure in terms of the health of indie record stores nationwide. Almost too many are opening up. Record stores are doing just fine overall. Restaurants have a my higher rate of closer I'm sure. That people get so upset when one closes just shows how important they are as an indicator of a city's cultural well being etc.

Honestly I don't understand how any record store can survive in NYC or San Fran given the rent.

Also, as an aside, if anyone wants to unload their CD collection if they still have one: I'll will gladly take them off your hands!

I feel like this thread might have just been an 8 year long setup to that punchline now.

I'm going to print it all out and release it as a zine next RSD. Maybe I can get Captured Tracks to distro it.

Music Shit / Re: FLIP SHIT LP

I'm not from Rochester and I'm digging this quite a lot if that counts for anything. I'd buy the LP for sure  (and stock in my store).
Maybe it's because I also live in a town with a bunch of weirdo jazzbo-trained kids who (sometimes) end up listening to like say Black Flag and Art Bears and start some silly ass band that is also kind of cool.

Demarco : Adorno
Raffi : Foucault
Back me up Investigate.

Definitely.....different . Not sure how I feel about it yet. But I'm willing to give this band a lot of leeway based on previous work.

I like Black Metal too:

What does all this have to do with the Raffi/Demarco connection though?
