Non-Music Shit / Re: The coming Draft???
« on: December 22, 2006, 10:29:00 PM »
I personally have no hopes that it's going to pass. It will drag on, just like Vietnam. I don't follow this stuff in detail (it's almost impossible to keep up with this shit, really), but Hillary was on C-Span today, and during some crap shit cermony speach her position seemed to be "stay the course", really. I don't expect a Dem. to pull out any sooner than a Rep. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody sold us the "secret plan" bullshit again, though.

A mess.

ps- do they lower their standards for a draft or something? Because I know two people who are actively TRYING to get into the army and aren't being let in because of 1.) a weight issue 2.) a prior criminal record. So I dunno.

Don't forgot that along with laws being changed, not everybody who got out of serving in Vietnam got to go home and live life as normal. They got to the point where people claiming to be C.O.'s where being shipped off to work in VA hospitals changing bedpans for two years. That's what happened to most of my dad's friends, all of whom claimed CO status. I would assume something like that would happen again. Not as bad as going off to war, but still a pretty shitty waste of a few years of yr life...

I'd love to see what a draft would do to Generation Y. Considering this war is about as unpopular as Vietnam was, if they reinstitute this and we are still in Iraq when the draft comes, there is going to be a lot of bitching, ill planned, violent demonstrations, and suicides. Would be interesting to see.

Marie Antoinette was horrible. Borat was funny but I wouldn't watch it again. I went on shitty dates to both of these, so my opinion may be tarnished by circumstances.

"Devil and Daniel Johnston" was really good!

"I like how a topic labelled "art fags" gets turned into a conversation about Pink Reason."

This is a very Wisconsin-centric board!

"It's the whole "to break the rules, you have to know the rules" adage"

Yeah. Strictly speaking of visual art, you meet alot of fuckers who think art started with Warhol or maybe Dada . Most of the time it's a cop out; high concept people without much talent. People scoff at figurative art. "Piss Christ" is neat, but that doesn't negate centuries of people working with minute details of light and shadow. Have some understanding of form before you break into abstractions. Pollack did figurative painting before he did splatter paintings. Spreading that out to the music tip, Parker knew jazz standards before he started blowing bop. Problem is, stuff like this has been filtered down and regenerated so much that you have a generation of people who don't know what it was like before form was fucked with in the first place ("post-modern"??). The abstraction IS the form and you have people who think rules never existed.

Now if you will excuse me I have to go smoke a pipe and vote Repub.

Yeah, writing definately gets better with age. I think younger people have a tendancy to not be able to depersonalize their writing; they think everybody already knows everything about their situation. That seems to be my problem, at least.

That, and I think you have to live awhile and write awhile before you a) have anything to write about b) have the finesse to write about it well.

I dunno.

Actually, I've noticed people in creative writing programs who are really into "poetry" tend to not be able to write well, either. Once you get them out of that free form, fragmented prose style and look at, say, an actual paper they had to write, you realize they should have "retard" branded onto their Cambell's Soup can shaped heads.

Post-modern, abstract art shit has fucked up the world in many ways. I believe there was a thread about this on here once.

Most people into the visual arts (I'm assuming what this is about...can't really decipher it) tend to have a flimsy grasp of writing clearly. Just sayin'.

Man, that sucks. That kid had a shitty ass life, too. Everybody treated him like garbage because he wasn't white. I didn't know him that well, really, but he seemed like a nice enough kid. Crappy.

Not to split pubes, but you guys don't think there is a "difference" between the geeks on this board and guys who walk around with Flock of Seagulls hair, a My Chemical Romance shirt, and own two CDs?

Just saying.

"If you ever want to cheat on your girlfriend or juggle a few girls here and there, never start a MySpace page.  If you have one, get rid of it"

I have literally been through six different Myspace accounts because of this. Even if you screen your comments, you still get paranoid. I guess not fucking around on your girlfriend might help, though...whatever.
