and also, don't look in the piedmont area. I think the area that Ablodingleberry was thinking of is Piedmont ave, which is considered part of north oakland/temescal. The actual piedmont area is up towards the hills and has more akin to kensington and moraga... cool to live in if you like having deer run through your yard and you have a good car with a top notch set of brakes.
And, to rephrase what Icki said in a way that I agree with, I don't see any difference in prices between apartments located in the good neighborhoods of oakland and sf, the difference is in square footage. Oakland's good to move to if you need a decent amount of space in your home, already are familiar with the area, and already know people here. Otherwise, if you like having conveniences like places that stay open late near you and some semblance of a night life, go for sf. If you're seeing cheap places in oakland, chances are it's gonna be in a mild-to-seriously rough neighborhood and if you're not thick-skinned about such things you could regret living there.
