what kind of music/records do you collect?

what percentage of your collection is reissues vs. original pressings?

what is the most you've ever paid for a record?

I mostly collect punk, indie, post punk, jangly pop, twee, noise pop, garage punk, outsider artist and random obscure one off bands.

70% original and 30% reissue.

The most I've ever paid for a record is probably $40.

"dangers" of record collecting?......

selling them all for 200 bucks to live in a closet for a month, then starting again from scratch....Oh yeah!!!
actually kinda fun....FUCK IT dude!

God Damn, is the general consensus of record collecting bad? Fuck that, it's wonderful! Until I have to sell them all to live in a closet I suppose. I'd probably sell plasma before I do that.

Then you're doing well...may I suggest kidnapping the child of a celebrity?

Sure, but I have no idea how that's related to record collecting. Are you suggesting collecting celebrity's children?

I would suggest reading this website:

I have no use for that website.

What the fuck is wrong with kids these days? Starting collecting records at twenty? That's not too long before I gave up collecting records.

Late bloomer sure, but can you blame me? When I started getting into music everything I ever wanted was free and just a mouse click away. Now after years of downloading shitty compressed mp3s I've learned the follies of my ways.

I just feel like I might end up like this guy.

Jesus, maybe I am taking it too seriously but I guess it's just like any other hobby I've had. Overtime it will start to settle down.

Music Shit / Record Collecting Experiences/Advice On Record Collecting
« on: April 28, 2010, 10:28:57 AM »
I'm 20 years old and a sophomore in college. I've been collecting records somewhere around a half a year now. I started with a handful and now after hundreds of dollars spent I have close to 300. At first I wasn't sure what I was doing, if this was just a hobby or if it was going to be something else. After thinking about it I've decided that record collecting is a part of my life. I'm going to buy several records if not more every week for the rest of my life. I know many of you(most of you) have been collecting for many years if not decades and have thousands of records in your collections.

I wanted to know if any of you guys think that there's an end or if there's a point in time where record collecting stops or if record collecting stops at a certain point?

I've been obsessing over this idea. The idea of record collecting.

Is this something that's going to consume the rest of my life?

What do you guys think are the dangers of record collecting?

What are some trouble shooting record collecting tips?

Experiences and stories appreciated.

ALSO:

The reason why I started collecting is because for the past five years I've been downloading mp3s and was afraid of the unknown vinyl format. I figured "well shit, why pay for music when I have right here for free".

Then I heard how vinyl sounded and changed my whole perspective on music.

Music Shit / Re: Beat Happening

I love Beat Happening, for me personally I feel like they are sincere punk rockers.
Looks at their history, completely DIY band, DIY sound, DIY live shows.
They had incredible passion and integrity.
Some could even argue that Calvin Johnson single handedly started the Olympia indie scene with The International Pop Underground and K Records.
Everything they've done is great, I mean you have some fillers here and there but on the whole their entire discography is essential.
If you start from beginning to end(Self Titled to You Turn Me On) you can really hear how the band grew overtime and got better.

If you don't like Beat Happening you have to at least acknowledge what they've done and the influence they've been to countless bands.

Over the past year I've started to collect vinyl and in the beginning I had no idea where to start. I thought to start with record stores. After scouring record store after record store I've decided that the internet is the place to be. I'm so tired of going to a store I've never been to and being disappointed in the selection. Most places I've been too just have the usual "Classic" records. It's almost like every kids parents sold their old records from when they were kids, which sometimes works out but usually it's just typical records that I've seen a million times, nothing really exciting or rare. It's true that the internet has destroyed the record store experience but it has also given birth to a new experience. It's easier to find what you want and to preview the music. The internet simply offers more to the collector. On the flipside, buying records in stores offer it's own unique features. For me though, the internet is the solution. I've bought most of my collection online.
