Pop Punk / the birthday party vs. the jesus lizard
« on: May 25, 2010, 05:34:39 PM »
I over heard a very heated debate at the record store the other day.

These guys were arguing everything from who has (and has had) more influence on other groups, the better front man, recording quality of the records, bass parts, guitar tones, lyrics. etc etc

Aside from the fact that the party pre-dates Yow and the Lizard (and Scratch Acid), and the concept is an apples and oranges conversation, what does that mean? "better", I thought it might make an interesting thread.

I don't consider myself an expert on either group

clash of the titans

here we go

virgin prunes - king of junk (over the rainbow cassette - '85)

Andy Rourke was a pretty good bass player

totally agreed - especially on meat is murder (rusholme ruffians, barbarism)

rusholme ruffians - the vibe is based on the old elvis tune "(Marie's the name) His Latest Flame" - moz actually sings a couple lines from the elvis version live on the "Rank" album

when morrissey kicked rourke out of the band for drugs around 86 or so, he left a note on his car "andy, you've left the smiths. goodbye, good luck" - hahaaha

word on the street is, there are very rough rehearsal tapes out there of morrissey singing with...... slaughter and the dogs (earrrrrly and briefly)

he also sang with the Nosebleeds!?! yup, ain't been to no music school

I remember Kim co-hosted parts of the international garage fest at randalls island back in 2004. he would rant on the mic inbetween bands. the last three bands for the fest were as follows:

New York Dolls
The Strokes
The Stooges (closed the fest)

the fuggin strokes, who were billed AFTER the dolls, were late taking the stage, Kim kept saying "where are the strokes!?"

this dude by me yelled as loud as he could:

"they're out back sleeping on bags of money!"

the stooges destroyed it, the dolls were solid

I could have done without Bo diddleys sugar hill gang esque rap though
