Non-Music Shit / Anybody know anything about external soundcards?
« on: December 18, 2006, 12:32:00 PM »
Hey. My laptop lacks a Line In jack and I'd like to transfer some recordings from my 4 track and burn some CDs. I'm okay on software, but the world of USB friendly external soundcards seems pretty vast. Can somebody recommend an affordable and decent quality one?

Thanks in advance.

I like guitar and recording junk alot, but I'm weirded out by bands that list off the specific equipment they use.

Really hilarious. This has made me feel okay about the three orders Crime has fucked up and all the bullshit they've put me through each time to get my money back.

I feel I should clarify my problems with Get Hip's mailorder. I bought some records from their website last year to give as Christmas gifts. None of the records I wanted were in stock aside from that Fevers single. I asked them to reconfigure my order for two copies of that, and to refund me the rest of the money. I had ordered like 12 records so my refund shoulda been like 40 some dollars plus shipping. They refused to refund my money, telling me that you can't give a refund with Paypal. I informed them that they certainly could and even explained how. They didn't believe me, or decided to ignore the possibility of giving a refund. In the end they wound up giving me store credit for the cost of the out of stock records and sending me the two Fevers singles. They ignored the differance in shipping costs. So I paid to have two records shipped to me for what I paid for the initial order. (The inability to recalculate shipping costs for an order that's been signifigantly skimmed down is a problem I've had with Crime as well.)

I wound up using that credit eventually, but I never did get the shipping thing figured out with them. Even with everything I ordered I still had $1.00 credit, so I asked them to just throw a dollar bill in with my order. They said they would, but instead sent me a piece of paper that said $1 credit.

Maybe Get Hip has gotten hip in the past year, but I think they qualify for cunt status.

This place and Get Hip are the worst mailorders I've ever dealt with.

I think there's certainly better Stones material, but I love the way this record sounds. The vocals especially.

I'd really like to see some of the guitars that they made.

Another problem the youth confronted when beginning to form groups to play rock 'n' roll, was the shortage of instruments and equipment. Electric guitars were almost non-existent in the USSR until the early sixties. Most instruments were manufactured in Eastern Europe and sold in the USSR in small numbers. The most notable were ten guitars that appeared in an East German-sponsored instrument shop in Moscow in 1966. All ten of the guitars were bought in the first hours that the shop was open and immediately resold at twice the price of purchase on the black market. Many groups were forced to make their own instruments or purchase copies of Western guitars that were produced by unofficial manufacturers. One of these manufacturers in 1969 managed to publish in a popular mechanical magazine a technique of converting an acoustic guitar into an electric one using a telephone voice coil, and shortly therafter there were reportedly no functioning public telephones in all of Moscow.

I've seen the Mysterians too. Either last year, or the year before. The show was really impressive. ? still has a great voice, and some real sexy moves.

It'd be cool if Gulcher issued a CD. I'd like to hear more than just the 4 songs that are out there.

Monkees "Greatest Hits" (I just saw that Rhino reissued the first two Monkees records. I went to download them, but couldn't find them, so I'm listening to this instead. I dunno who wrote or played these songs, but damn some of them are really good.)

Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, the greatest hit writers in history, wrote most of their tunes. The Monkees themselves laid down the vocal tracks, while studio musicians did the instrumentation. However, I've heard that Peter Tork played a few guitar tracks on the first record.

Let's Dance On is my personal fave.
