2013 was a great year.  Released some really solid titles, moved into my new office space, built a mini-ramp in our workshop, help start up a brewery/farm, and started some really exciting projects which will come to fruition in 2014.  Lots of releases in the works for the first ? of 2014 and the first two are now available for ordering.

First wave of releases for 2014 (OUT NOW):

CRIMINAL CODE no device LP (DY240)
Comes out Feb 4th with some extensive touring to follow.

THIS IS TACOMA, NOT OLY Criminal Code?s first proper long-player deals twelve tracks of technical precision matched with brickwall power. There?s a barbaric impulse festering in the twisted hearts of this Tacoma threesome, but No Device unfurls with dynamic tact and structural intricacy, sating its every aggressive urge with surgical attention to detail. With a stark palette of grizzly grays and off-white stains, Criminal Code details a singular spectrum of punk both bleak and savage. Naturally, the hardcore camp digs it because No Device extracts maximal strength from a few instruments in a minimal amount of time, but taut brooding snaps into serpentine guitar leads on enough songs for your death punk beholden to break off a piece. At any rate, Criminal Code tears down your descriptors and brings its own on No Device. A fiercely present, assertive album that dictates its own terms, listeners will find their go-to snappy little tags utterly inadequate and reductive. In the age of vaguely negative-wave nouveau and post-punk pastiche, Criminal Code is a colossal outfit casting its own long shadow.  Sam Lefebvre Oakland, 2014

WHITE LUNG songs of the south 7?(DY241)
Two new songs from Vancouver?s WHITE LUNG continue where SORRY left off.  Honing on their unrelenting post punk formula, WL returns with a clear confidence that they can write great songs and plan on delivering on the goods.  Featured as best new song on both Pitchfork, Rolling Stones, and Stereogum ? whatever that means.  The band has been busy in 2013 but expect them to be everywhere starting 2014?  Limited orange vinyl available.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / Deranged Records - recent batch
« on: October 20, 2013, 09:09:27 AM »
Some of our recent releases below.

PLEASURE LEFTISTS s/t 12? (DY239)
On the follow-up to their 2 song EP on Katorga Works (which features both songs off the EP), Pleasure Leftists have expanded upon the moody post-punk they're known for. With these songs, however, the chorusy bass is much more prominent than on their 12 inch debut EP and brings a darker feel to the sound. On first listen it seems easy to compare that sound to that of bands like Masshysteri or Terrible Feelings, but give it a few more spins and you begin to find a lot more depth and weirdness than the often straight-forward approach of the aforementioned. The most notable standout of PL for me is the rare and fiercely original vocal approach of lead singer Haley. Prior to being recruited, Haley was known for her radio show, and since has begun her own solo project called Kiernan Paradise, which sheds light on a more electronic synthy background. Her often incoherent banshee croons set a mood which envelops and entrances you, and the guitar and bassist are smart enough to back it up subtly and simply with jangly leads and dutiful rhythms. Not at all what one might expect from two former members of 9 Shocks Terror, but good enough to make you forget any comparison or dissection. "Hunger Split" accents the rest of the songs perfectly with its surprising brightness in the midst of the otherwise-broody record. The ensuing "Not Over" conjures some Twee elements with its soft loose guitars and driving bass.

SAFEWORDS s/t LP (DY236)
Taking nods from SISTERS OF MERCY and RED LORRY, YELLOW LORRY, SAFEWORDS burn the drum machines and chorus pedals on the altar and combine equal parts WIPERS and CHRISTIAN DEATH to bring you (post-mortem) 11 tracks of catchy death(rock)-(post)punk that will have you locked in your bedroom flipping this piece of wax over and over again ?til the sky?s gone out. ian curtis singing for the Wipers.

FUTURE BINDS 7? (DY237)
Debut release from this new Raleigh band featuring 3/4 of Sorry State faves Pure Scum. Their sound has matured since the raw, scrappy days of Pure Scum (after all, the members are like 17 now!)... everything is faster, tighter, more complex, and generally more locked-in, but still benefitting from Anthony's powerful, straightforward drumming and Lucas's authoritative vocals. Future Binds rep their Out Cold influence pretty hard, but with such a tight performance and loud, clear recording this reminds me more of Antidote or maybe Government Warning / Wasted Time (though less melodic than the former and not as mosh-y as the latter). Pure Raleigh hardcore. Strongly recommended. from Daniel at sorry state

DIVINE RIGHT s/t LP (DY228)
Someone call Elliot Stabler because I feel violated and dirty. Think of a full body massage with a baseball bat full of nails, my body is oozing with filth and tetanus. When I think about you, I don't wanna, don't wanna touch myself, I wanna do bad things. This is not the one that got away, it's the one that changed my ways. Bring this one to the bank because it's the last time you will live out your fantasy's, Divine right is done. I'm about to bust, my parents are in the next room and I"m afraid they are going to walk in on this "Freakshow". You can "Play this at my Funeral" or while I'm turning blue. -Clay 8/1/13"

TERRIBLE FEELINGS backwoods 7? (DY238)
Someone described the music as ?Loud, dark, therapeutic, and rough around the edges? and Anton once said he played ?black angst-ridden power pop.? Both quotes sum up Terrible Feelings pretty well. Place their sound somewhere in the wastelands between Wipers, Redd Kross, Ebba Gr?n and Murder City Devils. The band has to date released three 7?s and one full length album. They?ve embarked on no less than five full European tours and two US tours (one on each coast). They?ve shared stages with bands such as Jeff the Brotherhood, White Lung, Imperial State Electric, Fucked Up, The Raveonettes, and The Babies; and were handpicked by none other than Refused as support in both Europe and Sweden on their final tour. Musically Terrible Feelings has been described as proto punk, dark power pop and gloomy surf, with a tint of both country and 70s hard rock. All descriptions are correct. It?s rock 'n' roll.

VOIGHT-KAMPFF s/t LP (DY235)
It is with great pleasure that we offer in collaboration with Rock Bottom Records the debut album by VOIGHT-KAMPFF.  These 7 songs were originally released as a limited cassette Voight-Kampff began as Run Down in 2005 when Sulier and Swanson-White came together due to a shared love of darker moodier punk. After both had been in hardcore bands they decided to try something a little weirder. A 2 song 45 was done after passing songs back and forth and was belatedly released in 2012 on Baltimore?s Firestarter Records. At this point the songs were already written for their debut full-length and the two decided to make a clean break from RD with a name change and stripped down format which would involve only the two of them for recording purposes. VK has played roughly a show a year since 07 recruiting different friends to flesh out live line-ups including Doom Town?s Ashley Hohman and Tom Valli, Bryan Clarkson and Shaun Morrissey from The Humanoids, Matty Coonfield of Bug Chaser and Tone Rodent, Phil Schwarz of Rock Bottom Records, Ted Howard of the 86?ed, and Officer Brad Stiffler of Condominium. The duo is currently at work writing for their second LP and has plans to finally tour and increase their activities.

Razorcake
?Not at all what you?d expect from a long distance project involving members from Minneapolis? Formaldehyde Junkies and St. Louis?s the Breaks: this is some compelling dark punk ala the current crop of Northwestern bands, such as the Estranged, Criminal Code, and the Red Dons. Speaking of Red Dons, I?m hearing a lot of the Observers? magic with the in-your-face vocals and the way the guitar hooks weave in and out of a driving rhythm section. Perfect for punks who aren?t precious about where they shelve their Joy Division records. Voight-Kampff have apparently been collaborating for over seven years now and have more releases lined up, including a 7? on Firestarter under their previous moniker, Run Down. If this cassette is telling of what?s in store, then I offer to you my highest possible recommendation.? ?Juan Espinosa
from Terminal Escape
?It?s no secret that punks have taken to looking to the dreary sounds of decades past, but the nucleus of VOIGHT?KAMPFF have been working on these sounds since the last millennium and their efforts will reward your earholes with music dripping with dark basement sounds. Far from a goth punk rehash, this project leans heavily on guitar driven post punk, so much so that it?s easy to overlook the superb brooding vocals and even to miss the subtle keyboards and concentrate on the gloriously simple guitar leads. The two fellows at the center of VOIGHT?KAMPFF know exactly what they are up to and are no strangers to killer sounds (one dude from CARDIAC ARREST and one from FORMALDEHYDE JUNKIES/DAMAGE DEPOSIT), but this is easily their finest work to date. Easily (though mistakenly) lumped in with both Swedish melodic sounds like VICIOUS or with the current ?80s dark punk resurgence, this is one of the few fortunate bands who sound instantly familiar and fiercely original at the same time. There?s vinyl coming soon, and I couldn?t be happier.?

YOUTH AVOIDERS s/t LP (DY234)
After a very well received EP and two US tours, YOUTH AVOIDERS return with their first full length album. For fans of hardcore punk, this will be without a doubt, the best hardcore punk record to come from France in a LONG time.  Part hardcore reminiscent of Career Suicide?s punchy delivery and part punk with a frantic guitar work that brings to mind Royal Headache.  Loads of catchy hooks delivered at high velocity makes this a real stand out record.

NEIGHBORHOOD BRAT no sun no tan LP (DY233)
Compilation LP of the first three Neighborhood Brats releases: Neighborhood Brats EP, We Own the Night 7" and Ocean Beach Party 7".  Also includes two unreleased studio tracks. Often described as Black Flag meets the Avengers with a Killed By Death and Dangerhouse-inspired method of attack, this is the complete recorded output of the band's first year of existence, prior to their relocation from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Helmed by vocalist Jenny Angelillo and guitarist George Rager, and featuring the Brats' original rhythm section lineup consisting of bassist Jasmine Watson and drummer Kirk Podell (both pulled simultaneous double-duty in Neo Cons).

NEIGHBORHOOD BRAT birth right 7? (DY232)
Neighborhood Brats, lead by vocalist Jenny Angelillo (the Orphans), are a punk rock band from Los Angeles by way of San Francisco. Their debut EP, recorded after only 5 initial rehearsal sessions in 2011, became an instant classic in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the band honed their sound and became known for out of control, spastic live shows. After releasing two subsequent, well-received singles, Angelillo and guitarist George Rager relocated the band to Los Angeles in late 2012.  Birth Right is their debut EP on Deranged and features 3 new ragers and a cover.  NO SUN NO TAN 12? compilation coming out on Deranged in June.

Lots of new records, and more on the way. I just added a number of new titles to the ?pre-order? section of the website. Most will be shipping in mid April. Again, most of these will not be shipping until MID April. Canada Post no longer offers surface mail to the USA and yes it does cost a little over $10 to ship one 12? to the US. That said, you can ship 3 x 12? for about $15. Still have the option of shipping surface to International locations but it can take 2-3 months to arrive. It?s cheaper but you have to be patient.

NEW RELEASES and REPRESSES and available at www.derangedrecords.com:

CULO my life sucks and I could care less LP (DY218)
''Okay, 1st off, the LP is NOT called 'The Return of Culo', look at the spine of the LP for proof of that. But in a sense, its almost a return record since the guys took a good amount of time prepping it. This LP was recorded over a weekend in mid March 2012 with their man of choice Kevin up in Lansing MI. This is definitely not a concept record, but it can almost be called a 'time and place' record since the album is a reflection of everything in the band's life when writing it, but what bands don't? If you only loved the fast stuff the band has done before, that's still present on tracks here but also the band offers more variety then ever before. To be blunt, the fast songs are faster, the mid tempo tracks are more punchy and the the rest are just downright catchy as hell. I see the 'Ramones songs made ugly' as a comparison nowadays made about a select few, and finally someone's pulls it off, even though the boys go for their own thing but that certain band is a large influence. This is a true PUNK record. And damn John's voice almost is an exact cross of Jerry and John Brannon, its so eerie the semblance. This album was just meant to happen and even if its release experienced a few delays, it's a timeless record. Nothing was spared from the record down to the look, layout and quality and what you get sounds excellent. So sit back, grab something to drink (or supply to any other habit you may have) and enjoy all that is Culo.'' from Nick Sick available in black, ltd yellow and ltd red vinyl

WHITE LUNG two of you b/w hunter 7? (DY230)
Hailing from Vancouver, B.C., high-energy punks White Lung pull references from every era of punk remaining unforgiving yet melodic. Their debut LP It's the Evil (Deranged) was named Punk Album Of The Year by Exclaim! and their sophomore LP Sorry (Deranged) has managed to top the last.Spawned from East Vancouver?s dirty DIY Emergency Room scene, White Lung formed in 2006 with guitarist Kenneth joining in 2009. From the beginning they were road warriors, touring regularly, even contemplating selling their underwear just to get on the road (they eventually opted for the more practical route of saving up funds.) White Lung broke out of their incestuous local scene and brought their music across Canada and the US. They continue to tour fanatically, their live shows have been called, ?effortlessly engaging and enigmatic, harnessing a controlled violence that managed to be passionate without going the least bit over-the-top? by Exclaim! Magazine. Available in black and ltd blue vinyl

NEO CONS idiot circus 7? (DY229)
Final release from these Bay Area bozos featuring six high energy hardcore-by-death stompers and their loudest, nastiest recording yet. If you haven?t caught em live, prepare for a sweaty mess of pig piles and manic stupidity. Available in black and lted blue vinyl

WILD CHILD 7? (DY219)
Best demo I heard in 2011 and here we finally have their debut record. For those who heard the demo (Fashionable Idiots just released the demo on vinyl), this is more of the same chaotic hardcore. A more snarly DEEP WOUND? Excellent. Available in black and ltd white vinyl.

ALTERED BOYS 7? (DY225)
Originating from Newbridge, NJ, Altered Boys plays a supreme brand of hardcore that's heavily-inspired by fast, early 2000s NJHC that has helped rejuvenate a once (temporarily) stagnant scene into something that is once more interesting and vital. This is their 2nd 7?, follow-up to their recent 7? on Katorga Works. Available in black vinyl

EAGULLS  ep 12? (DY224)
The ferocious post-punk 5 piece bands, Eagulls based in Leeds, England are pleased to share their 5 track EP on Canada?s prestigious punk label Deranged.  A few lucky folks have been able to catch the band?s European shows.  The shows received high accolades as some of the most thrilling and visceral performances ever.  EAGULLS has shared the stage with Iceage, Milk Music, Ceremony, and Fucked Up.  The five tracks - ?Coffin?, ?Moulting?, ?No If?s, No Buts?, ?Cripple? and ?Still Born?; Drawing from a wide variety of influences, EAGULLS manage to create something new, while still paying homage to classical punk.

CASANOVAS IN HEAT ruins 7? (DY221)
Casanovas In Heat are a punk band from Boston, MA. Formed in 2010, neighborhood chums, Davy & Con (also of MALE NURSES) decided to take a whack at high-energy, sweat-induced, melodic punk that they had been screwing around with since they were teenagers. They recruited fellow mavericks, Steve & Sean, to complete the dream team. Sparked by a wide-range of influences, the Casanovas want nothing more than to turn every day into a night, and every night into a crusade. A solid mix of the REPLACEMENTS and NAKED RAYGUN.

SPECTRES nothing to nowhere LP (DY222)
Spectres are a Post Punk band from Vancouver, B.C. originally formed largely as a studio only project by Brian Gustavson and Steve Hanker In Coombs, British Columbia.  After self releasing several demos both Gustavson and Hanker relocated to Vancouver and brought Heather and Nathan Szilagyi in on Drums and Bass, and Zach Batalden in on second guitar.  Heather Szilagyi would soon be replaced by Steve Gerenscer on drums, and after releasing two singles and touring the west coast with the Estranged Hanker would leave the band to be replaced by Tyler Pilling.  2010 saw the release of the band?s first full length LP, LAST DAYS which was followed in 2011 by a European tour and a split 7? with Arctic Flowers.  NOTHING TO NOWHERE is the new album and the Spectres most ambitious to date, with ten new songs that push the band?s sound in new directions.

GIVE singles going confetti (DY220)
Every once in awhile the underground music world gives birth to a new band that reminds some of us why we're still here in the first place. I'm not just talking about a breath of fresh air. I'm talking about being handed a ticket to ride a time machine, gaining telekenetic powers, and some Spock mind-meld-type shit. Absolute emotional possesion with mental and physical reprecussions. If you've ever witnessed their untouchable live set, read the suggestive/provocative lyrics to "I Am Love", or admired their flower power aesthetic you know I'm talking about the mother lovin' GIVE!

Singles Going Confetti is the second chapter in the history of this Washington, DC quintet and not un-like Aliens, Empire Strikes Back, or Batman Returns- the sequel is better than the original. These 11 songs collect all five of their singles released on Youngblood, PainKiller, Triple B, React, and Deranged Records with one brand new track exclusive to this record. Singles Going Confetti will be sure to pleasure, confuse, and grow on all of us until our head's explode like a rose. Flowerheads come and take me over.
LISTEN / BUY DIGITAL HERE:  http://derangedrecords.bandcamp.com/album/singles-going-confetti

SYSTEMATIK s/t 12? (DY215)
Raw Hardcore from Vancouver B.C with a solid D-Beat backbone that doesn?t bore you to tears.  Searing guitar work and a vocalist that can actually manage to convey his live frustration through recorded media, a rare feat.  A distinct sound is hard to pinpoint.  Influences range all over the place from Death Side to Poison Idea.  Everyone will tell you something different, make your own judgement.  Members of Unlearn and Vacant State. After the break-up of Unlearn the guitarist set out to get another project started as soon as possible, actually only within a few days he and Isaiah (vocalist) started working together.  After a few months, a few bassists and a few drummers, a solid lineup developed and a demo was recorded in Dec.2011.  The S/T LP was recorded in april.2012 in Portland with Stan Wright.

THE MEN  immaculada CD format (DY223)
THE MEN's self-released debut album originally limited to 500 copies now remastered and available on CD format for the first time. 8 songs of desperate, fuzzed out, riff laden punk/post-punk. This release really is an excellent mash of shoegaze and drony soundscapes with buried vocals beneath it all. Dreamy at times, with that Sonic Youth vibe.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / WHITE LUNG sorry NEON PISS
« on: May 28, 2012, 08:28:42 PM »
NOW AVAILABLE

WHITE LUNG - sorry
High-energy manic punks, White Lung, are back with their sophomore release, Sorry.  Their 2010 debut It?s the Evil earned them the title as the primary ambassadors for Canada?s emergent punk scene receiving critical acclaim from CHARTAttack to Maximum Rock n? Roll to Terminal Boredom and their follow-up does not disappoint. McCorkell?s signature driving, off-kilter riffage paired with Way?s snarling and aggressive yet melodic vocals and the hard-hitting rhythmic duo of Grady Mackintosh on bass and Anne-Marie Vassilou on drums amp up White Lung?s position from ambassadors to the queens (and king) of Canandian noise rock.
Bowing to the inevitable need for comparison, according to Vice Magazine, ?White Lung combine the feral energy of the Germs with the taut, wiry dynamics of the Wipers and have released a string of singles that keep improving in a bewilderingly exponential fashion.?  Also present in their sound are golden era Kurt and Courtney, The Bags, and Rocket from the Crypt. This wealth of influences doesn?t mean the band?s sound is hard to pin-down. Written and recorded nearly simultaneously, Sorry manages to be both raw and complex, thanks to White Lung?s focus on cohesive writing.
Sorry may have been stressful to record, but it?s a joy to listen to. It signals a new era for White Lung, featuring denser more melodic songs that maintain the rough edge of their punk pedigree.

NEON PISS s/t LP
?Playing music is a challenge...if you want it to be good. If you want your music to mean something, then it needs to speak to people the minute it hits their ears, and that is the challenge. NEON PISS have been crafting their debut vinyl release for nearly two years, but you get the impression that this was an inevitable result - a vision realized when these four dudes started playing punk together. Everything about NEON PISS sounds familiar, you know how you are going to feel as soon as you hear the opening swagger of "Tabula Rasa," and they are every bit as good as you hope they are going to be. An LP full of songs that will make you feel instantly comfortable - you might have seen this movie, you've just never seen it acted quite this well, and the production this time around is sheer perfection. You are welcome to dismiss this as some more of that melodic punk that you are too cool to admit that you like, but you would be a fool. Yes, the songs are catchy, and yes NEON PISS will get stuck in your head and even sometimes put a spring in your step, but this shit is deep and these songs are as close to utter brilliance as I can ever remember hearing."  Robert Collins/terminal escape blogspot  Tuneful melodic punk not unlike the OBSERVERS.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / TERRIBLE FEELINGS lp shadows
« on: April 08, 2012, 08:38:20 PM »
Happy to report that the TERRIBLE FEELINGS shadows LP is now available for preorder.  The records have been pressed and are on their way to me now.  Will be shipping in mid April.

The album was recorded at Tambourine Stu?dios in their hometown, in January 2012. Co-producer Erik Sunding spurred them to use more than ten different guitars and amps, a quirky violin bass played over a massive amp from the 70s, old beat up drums, farfisa, hammond, piano and tons of rippling percussion. The outcome is 12 quite different songs, somehow all tied together by a common notion; walking hand in hand towards a bleak future. For those with a weakness for melancholic yet danceable punkrock, this record might just prove to be an essential staple in any collection.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / deranged update - culo 7"

CULO ? preorders, tour, and reviews
First things first, you can now pre-order their new 7? ? Toxic Vision.  It is actually out but just waiting on it to be delivered to me.  It comes in three colors ? black, clear, and red.  This is CULO?s third 7? and it is a scorcher.  Pure piss and vinegar hardcore delivered at high velocity and at no expense to catchy riffing.  Mandatory!

CULO will be doing a West Coast tour this Feb. along side SCHOOL JERKS.  Dates are on the intro page of the deranged website.

Military Trend review
From RAZORCAKE #60  ?Un-gawd-damn-believably awesome! Pure fuggin? godhead hardcore punk rock! No metal, no pop, just straight-up hardcore punk. Four anthems of checking out of society and not giving a fuck who cares.  This stuff sounds legit and not some part time pose.  Fast, pissed, and catchier than hell.  ?Shootin Glue? will burrow its way into your mind, and the title track is the sonic bull in a china shop.  Instruments are beat to hell.  I image a couples nodes are going to develop on the singer?s vocal chords, but what a great record.  Looking forward to their split with Raw Nerves.

NO CLASS - tour
I am expecting the dates shortly but NO CLASS are doing a small tour in March.

UP NEXT
BRAIN KILLER LP, B-LINES 12?, NEO CONS 7?, NO PROBLEM LP, WHITE LUNG / NU SENSAE 7?

RED DONS fake meets failure review
From RAZORCAKE #60 ?Lightning. Pure, white-hot, hot-streaking, sizzling, punk lightning. It?s punk that people who?ve ?given up,? ?don?t get,? or ?moved on? from punk have the highest percentage of liking. It?s just so obviously scorching, beautiful, and crackling music, regardless of genre. And I was reluctant to admit that lightning could strike twice. One of the driving forces behind Red Dons is Doug Burns, the lead singer and guitarist of the untouchable every-member-made-it-greater band, The Observers. The Red Dons first LP, Death to Idealism, while it had its bright spots, sounded covered in blankets, a little restricted and restrained, a little awkward, a little tentative. Getting used to new skin. Not so with Fake Meets Failure. The burka?s ripped off, faces are revealed, and those faces are screaming. Analogous to the transformation of the Vicious to Masshysteri or Sexy to Future Virgins, it took a little time from the dusk of one band to the dawn of another, but the newer band, exhibiting similar genetic code to its predecessor, has developed its own personality, its own habits, and has accomplished what many, including myself, didn?t think was possible: release more music that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with some of their own legacy?s finest work. One of the best punk records of 2010, hands down. ?Todd Taylor

Okay? so this is the new Red Dons LP. I should start by saying that Red Dons could very well be the best punk rock band on Earth. Death to Idealism is without question one of my favorite records of the modern era, due in no small part to its unique (and not universally loved) production. But mostly it is the songs?logical extensions of The Observers melancholic take on ?80s East Coast punk rock, with a deeper injection of the East Bay Ray or Mike Palm lead style?that seat Red Dons atop the heap, and Fake Meets Failure boasts the band?s best songs to date. The production on the record is noticeably more aggressive than that of its predecessor, and the songs themselves are both catchier and angrier. Whether intentional or not, Doug even channels Jello on a few spoken lines on the record, perfectly complimenting the ominous, middle-eastern scale leads found throughout. Lyrically, Red Dons remain painfully jarring, both in- and outwardly, and Doug?s vocals are more haunting and pure than ever. In a year already full of great punk rock records, this is by far the best I?ve heard so far, and it?s going to be incredibly difficult to surpass. Phenomenal. ?Dave Williams

From what I manage to find online, this appears to be a ?collective? founded by a member of The Observers and a member of Clorox Girls, and features a rotating lineup of members from those bands, Born/Dead, Scott Baio Army, and others. The music, for the most part, stays firmly in mid-tempo, but they pull out all the stops and crank out some grade-A quality punk rock with much intelligence and rock solid songwriting in evidence. We?re roughly past the year?s half-way mark, but I can totally see this making its way onto a lot of top ten lists come December. ?Jimmy Alvarado

NOMOS notes from the Acheron review
From Razorcake #60  ?I have yet to tire of listening to ?The Fall.? It starts off with a mid-tempo intro then rips open with some full-on thrash. So fuggin? good. Life affirming. Nomos, from Brooklyn, crank out some dark, noisy, and heavy hardcore. Comparisons have been made to bands like Poison Idea and Citizens Arrest. I sort of hear that, but those are lazy references. These guys are strong enough to stand on their own. If these guys are hip to the Swell Maps (as they cover ?Vertical Slum?), then it?s obvious they?re not some typical band. The lyrics are opaque at times, but interesting nonetheless. It?s as though you?re sorting out a code. I like how they can deliver white-knuckled thrash, then switch over to something like ?O?Fortuna,? which slows things down temporarily at the start, then it?s back to full-on, straight to the bottom of the deep end and the sound of facial bones crunching. Four records reviewed in this issue have reaffirmed/reignited my faith/love of hardcore. This is one of them. ?Matt Average

NEW PRE-ORDERS, NEW WEBSITE, BANDS ON TOUR ETC.

PREORDERS ?
It maybe difficult to believe but I just added 23 new pre-order items.  Many will ship before the end of June, the rest, early July.  They include: MOTHER?S CHILDREN LP, STATUES LP, AC4 LP, BURNING LOVE LP/CD, RED DONS LP/CD, WHITE LUNG LP/CD, YOUNG OFFENDERS LP, BLOODY GEARS 7?, MOLESTED YOUTH 7?, MATURE SITUATIONS 7?, MALE NURSES 7?, AND RED DONS 7?.  If you are on the fence about any of these releases, most of the bands have listed tracks from their new records on their myspace/websites. Needless to say, postage cost are still high and if you are planning on ordering more than 5x lps, please email me first to see if I might be able to save you some money on shipping.

NEW WEBSITE ? Nothing wrong with the last site but the new one offers .  There is still lots of content to add (media section)

ON TOUR ? BURNING LOVE, WHITE LUNG, RED DONS, and MALE NURSES are touring part/all of summer.  Dates are available on the DERANGED site.  Ps. RED DONS needs help with shows on July 19th in Alabama or Northern Florida and July 20th in Atlanta or Athens Georgia.  If you can help, email me.

BURNING LOVE ? Now accepting pre-orders on their LP ? SONGS FOR BURNING LOVERS.  They are also on tour most of the summer.  Burning Love started in 2007 as a side project to Cursed and Our Father, with the intention of making some loud and riff driven punk songs and mixing together the sounds of their varying favorites (from Black Flag and Hot Snakes to Kyuss or Turbonegro). BL has since taken to the front burner, touring at home and overseas and releasing two EPs - and now, their Songs For Burning Lovers LP.  Produced by Ian Blurton and mastered by Mammoth Sound, SONGS FOR BURNING LOVERS delivers 12 tracks of fierce hardcore punk.  "This sinister collaboration spawns a dirtier punk'n'roll-based hardcore outfit than one would anticipate - keenly restrained enough to be melodic but still abrasive and loud" - Keith Carman, Exclaim tracks from album available here http://www.myspace.com/burninglovers

WHITE LUNG ? Now accepting pre-orders on their LP ? IT?S THE EVIL.  After 3 critically acclaimed 7?s (two of which on DERANGED) and a slight line up change, Vancouver?s WHITE LUNG deliver one fantastic debut album.  Mix the punk venom of some of the more notorious riot grrrl bands of the 90?s with the guitar noodling and tempo of UK post punk by way of John Reis and you get something pretty close to WHITE LUNG.  tracks from album available here http://www.myspace.com/whitelungwhitelung
Review of recent Atlanta 7? by Exclaim:
Embodying the sneer and attitude of early L.A. punk bands like X and the Germs, Vancouver, BC's White Lung have blazed a fierce trail over their short career. On the back of two seven-inches, placement on the influential Emergency Room scene comp and a raging live show, the quartet have emerged as one of the city's most promising new bands. This third seven-inch finds the group honing their songwriting while losing none of their edge. Lead singer Mish's vocals are often the target of Karen O comparisons, but the similarities to Yeah Yeah Yeahs lay more in the band's guitar riffs, which borrow from Nick Zinner's early squalls. B-side "80,000 x" moves at breakneck speed, while "D.O.I." opens with a nice, creeping bass line, but the title track is the undeniable standout. The opening riff alone is worth the price of admission and it doesn't lose impact throughout the track's two-and-a-half minutes, while Mish continuously snarls, "You explode," proving that White Lung are indeed ready to step out of the punk rock dugout and into a larger spotlight.

MOLESTED YOUTH ? Now accepting pre-orders for their debut 7?. Lots has changed in the 3 years they have been a band, including the departure of the original singer and the original drummer.  the current line-up of sean, warren, zack, and richard has released a demo tape which was released in may of 2009, and a seven inch with deranged records (recorded by jonah falco of FUCKED UP) is on the way.  coming to a northern east coast city near you in august of 2010, expect a fast, loud, and chaotic set from these Toronto drunkards.  Tracks from 7? available here http://www.myspace.com/molestedyouthhc

BLOODY GEARS -  Now accepting pre-orders for their debut 7?. After a stunning demo last year, Boston?s BLOODY GEARS return with a brilliant 7?. Imagine a more aggressive WIPERS mixed with early ARTICLES OF FAITH and you get something pretty close to BLOODY GEARS.  This is a no-brainer ? top notch hardcore punk.  MRR had this to say about the demo ? ?This band already has a sound that's their own, but likely draws from THE OBSERVERS and LEATHERFACE,and there's something very Midwest about these songs as well, making me think of early ARTICLES OF FAITH and HUSKER DU." Tracks from 7? available here  http://bloodygears.blogspot.com/

MATURE SITUATIONS ? Now accepting pre-orders for 2nd 7?- OLD HANDS. Mature Situations, the band, was borne of the need to trivialize the grievances and tribulations of the elderly, (in a sexual manner where possible), so as to anger karma and preemptively flip off the inevitable pants-shitting, Viagra-snorting, hip-replacing, sour-milk-smelling future of all men.  Is nothing sacred?  4 new songs, featuring Chris Colohan (LEFT FOR DEAD , CURSED).

MALE NURSES - Now accepting pre-orders for their debut 7?. Another hardcore gem from the Boston region.  MALE NURSES mix the Midwest hardcore sound of the 80?s with the South California mood of the same era. Tracks from 7? available here  http://www.myspace.com/guilttriphc

RED DONS - Now accepting pre-orders for 2nd album ? FAKE MEETS FAILURE and single. After the much lauded release of their debut album and successfully touring the US, Canada, Europe, and Brazil, the RED DONS entered a Portland studio to record ten new tracks. On this new album FAKE MEETS FAILURE (DERANGED RECORDS / TAKEN BY SURPRISE RECORDS), the band successfully develops their unique style even further. Coded lyrics about vagabond characters moving back and forth between the lines of the current climate of fear and suspicion that has been brought upon the USA by the war on terror. Again, consistent songwriting and a great production make this record stand out among the current competition. Combining TSOL-like vocals, SoCal punk rage, and the defiant melancholy of Pacific Northwesterners like the WIPERS this powerful release rises above the stack of contemporaries that take on the early 80s punk sound. No retro fashion hype, no flavor of the month. When this year turns, be sure to find this LP in the leading spots of Top 5, Top 10 and Top 100 lists of 2010. Though members are now scattered across the globe, the RED DONS will tour the USA in July 2010 and set sail for Europe in the spring of 2010. So What's Left Now? A hell of an aftermath to follow...one hell of a follow up record, and one great, fierce force of a touring machine known as RED DONS.

YOUNG OFFENDERS - Now accepting pre-orders for LP ? LEADER OF THE FOLLOWERS.  Release description coming but in the meantime, tracks are available here http://www.myspace.com/youngoffendersmusic

MOTHER?S CHILDREN - Now accepting pre-orders on their LP ? THAT?S WHO.  From Ottawa Canada, pumping out a unique style of high-energy power pop come MOTHER?S CHILDREN. The four piece got together to start a punk band in the vein of THE BOYS and TEENAGE HEAD with the pop sensibilities of THE RASPBERRIES and THE EASYBEATS, and the stomping rock n? roll energy of T.REX and SLADE. In their two-year existence MOTHER?S CHILDREN have played backyards, birthdays, basements, bedrooms, dive bars, concert halls, cottages, parking lots, even on a boat, and have won over the hearts of local audiences with their positive attitude, and relentless love for rock n? roll. The bubblegum loving punks playing power pop in a modern age are finally starting to receive international attention with their brand new debut album. ?That?s Who!? is a slice of pop perfection that stands alone today, but probably would?ve once fit in nicely amongst the STIFF or BOMP! records catalog. The songs are innocent, unpretentious, exciting and filled with unforgettable hooks that sound just as good on your stereo at home as they would on a summer afternoon on the beach, blasting out an AM transistor radio.  For fans of MARVELOUS DARLINGS. Tracks from LP available here http://www.myspace.com/motherschildren

AC4 - Now accepting pre-orders on their LP. Singer Dennis Lyxz?n and bassist David Sandstr?m?formerly of Sweden?s Refused, one of the most innovative and influential bands of the ?90, have reunited.  AC4 is clearly a hardcore band: old-school, stripped-down, and apparently minus the radical sonic tinkering and texturing of Refused.

STATUES - Now accepting pre-orders on their 3rd LP ? HOLIDAY COPS.  Canada is so proud of their native sons that the country erected a massive golden monument to the STATUES in the middle of their hometown and sent all cops on holiday so that the punks could dance around it singing 'Hurray Hurray! a new STATUES album saw the light of day!' On this third album, the three Pop-Punk scientists refined their formula in these 10 brand new songs and poured in some drops of DEVO, SPITS and FUTUREHEADS that lets the test tube eruptively foam over with joy, heart, guts and splendid melodies! You want your beloved poppy tunes? You got 'em in 'Holiday cops', 'Reflux' and your new hymn to youth and the weekend 'Young enough'. You need more cool and loud bass lines? Try 'Stop watch' and the critical, exploding 'Self Help Con Job' to satisfy your appetite.  After two European tours, I?ve been told we can expect STATUES to venture south of the boarder, possibly for a West Coast tour in late 2010. Tracks available here http://www.myspace.com/statues

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / Deranged September Update
« on: September 16, 2009, 02:36:30 PM »

PRE-ORDERS ? All pre-orders for the recent batch of releases (vicious cycle, burial, and sedatives lps) shipped out last week of August.   Your package should have arrived by now.  I am going to stop doing pre-orders

STORE ? Recently added a number of interesting items to the online store including the European only BRUTAL KNIGHTS total rebellion 12?, v/a KILLED BY TRASH LP volume 2 (with fucked up and vicious cycle), SEDATIVES LP European pressing, SUSPECT PARTS maneater 7?, three new MARVELOUS DARLINGS 7?, new STATUES 7?, URBAN BLIGHT 12?, GORILLA ANGREB disco LP, SLICES 7?.  MATURE SITUATION 1st 7? and FAILURES 7? should be here next week.

FUCKED UP? FU is once again doing their annual 3 day bash around Halloween.  Other Deranged affiliated bands on the bill include NOMOS, MATURE SITUATIONS, URBAN BLIGHT, and BRUTAL KNIGHTS.  As usual, expect a few unexpected surprises.

GUILTY FACES? review from MRR #317, also made a few top tens  ?GUILTY FACES? sound comes close to an amalgam of the REPLACEMENTS? songwriting and the rhythmic punch of the WIPERS ? and , of course,  ADOLESCENTS in the insistent vocals.  This debut LP contains ten songs in a medium-fast speed, but with a definite hardcore energy, which gives a sharper edge to nearly every song.  Not every tune is distinctive, but the rockin? sound is insistent and convincing.  A nice follow-up to GUILTY FACES? 7?, and definitely above the norms.?

BRAIN KILLER? review from MRR #317, also made many top tens ?Don?t know if I can top Bruce?s review of BRAIN KILLER?s debut 7?.  Actually, I?m not even gonna try!  There?s been a considerable ?buzz? around this band, so perhaps many people are by now familiar with them.  For those who aren?t, BRAIN KILLER is a top-notch fusion of DEVOID OF FAITH style USHC and JAPANESE bands like BASTARD and FRAMTID.  It?s noisy and very powerful, and they manage to capture the same level of sonic power live. Definitely one of the better, if not best , records I?ve heard this year.

NOMOS ? If you haven?t ordered this 7? yet, not sure what you are waiting for.  It absolutely rips.

SEDATIVES ? Here is a track from their s/t album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMi1iH2rucY

VICIOUS CYCLE ? review of Pale Blue Dot from Canada?s Much Music  ?It?s probably just best to get it out of the way: George Petit of Alexisonfire and Damien ?Pink Eyes? Abraham of F**ked Up appear on the debut album from Sudbury?s Vicious Cycle. Try your hardest and you might pinpoint their cameos, but doing that would detract from the band?s own savage rumpus. With producer Jonah Falco (also of F**ked Up) at the boards, Vicious Cycle use ?80s hardcore, proto-punk and Motorhead as their origins, but they?re careful to challenge themselves by breaking free from the usual hardcore trappings. ?In Tranquility,? a fired-up punk?n'roll anthem and ?Blur,? some straight-up hardcore are examples of what they dp best. But the strenuous momentum is broken up by ?Death,? two minutes of scrawling guitar noise, and even more of a surpise, ?For Carl,? some dour post-punk that demonstrates there?s much more to this band than meets the eye. Rating: A-  ?

WHITE LUNG? A new guitarist has been located and they expect to start playing shows again soon.  The recording of the album has been postponed a few months and should be expected early next year.

As usual, loads going on.

MAILORDER DISCOUNT ? From now until May 1st, for orders over $20 (before shipping cost) you can pick ?SURFACE? shipping (the cheapest option) and I will ship by ?AIRMAIL? at no extra cost.  This discount is only possible for orders destined to USA and International locations ? sorry Canada, surface is not available as an option.

PLEASE NOTE that for those in the USA, surface will only be cheapest option for packages weighing less than 1 kg and for less than 2kg for International locations).  anyquestions, email me.

I just added a bunch of new distro titles such H100?s 12?, QUICK FIX 7?, new FYFAN 7?, VANCOUVER COMPILATION, two new Hjernespind lps (LEATHERVEIN and HUL), CLOCKCLEANER 7?, BAYONETTES limited cover we are doomed 7?, BRAIN KILLER and TRANZMITORS preorders, etc?

VACANT STATE? While on the topic of mailoder, I strongly recommend folks check out Vancouver?s VACANT STATE?s debut 7? ? ripping hardcore and next 7? is on DERANGED.  I included a track from their 7? on www.myspace.com/derangedrecords

TRANZMITORS ? After many delays, the BUSY SINGLES LP comes out the 2nd week of April.  Limited colored vinyl is available for preorder in the online store.  This LP compiles all tracks from their 4 singles, which are almost all sold out and out of press and one really excellent bonus track.  For those who haven?t heard, Vancouver?s TRANZMITORS play UK influenced powerpop in the vain of the BOYS, the BUZZCOCKS and the EXPLODING HEARTS.

WOLFBRIGADE ? The North American pressing of their new album COMALIVE is now out on vinyl, cd and digital. The 5th album from the Scandinavian hardcore steamroller with 13 new tracks of down tuned crustcore blasts. Their strongest studio recording since the excellent ?ALL DAY HELL?,  ?COMALIVE? finds the band in peak form blending obvious elements of POISON IDEA, MOTORHEAD, TRAGEDY, DISCHARGE, and death metal. Limited colored vinyl is still available.

"Regardless what music genre you like it always depends on if it has that special groove. You know that special ability to speak directly to the listener, so you feel the music in your spine and your groin instead of it takeing a detour through the brain. Stockholm based WOLFBRIGADE knows this very well."Comalive", their 8th fullenght, is an absolutly supreme display on groovy rawpunk. In tracks like "Ride for a fall", "Deny Tomorrow" and "Barren Dreams" they layer foaming aggression with rock solid pumping d-beat and the energy is focused on direct hits, not on undistinctive speed. This is, together with Avskum's "Uppror Underifr?n", THE Swedish punk album of 2008" / CLOSE UP MAGAZINE (Sweden)

WHITE LUNG ? VICE magazine recently did a short interview with WHITE LUNG ? http://www.viceland.com/int/v16n2/htdocs/ready-to-fight-628.php

BRAIN KILLER ? Accepting preorders now. Debut 7? from Massachusetts hardcore band ? BRAIN KILLER.  Fast, noisy, powerful hardcore with heavy influence from Japanese hardcore like BASTARD / DISCLOSE and straight forward American hardcore like DEATHREAT. Here is a review of their demo from MRR :  ?This demo is fucking great! Fast powerful noisy-as-fuck hardcore with some burly ass vocals and a definite DISCHARGE influence, but they are by no means a D-beat or Dis-band.  They just have that element somewhere in the sound.  Actually BRAIN KILLER has more than just a little bit of a DEATHREAT/BASTARD feel, but this shit totally stands on it?s own.  I love this and if I had any money, I?d try to put out their record!  Best demo in months.?
You can check Side A of the 7? at www.myspace.com/derangedrecords

TOTAL ABUSE ? I recently added two dozens copies of the limited ?breast milk? edition of the TOTAL ABUSE LP.  The copies were saved for a store that never came through on their payment, so they?ve been relisted in the online store.

TOTAL ABUSE - The highly anticipated self-titled album from TOTAL ABUSE is a monster hardcore punk classic.  A recent feature in Skyscraper magazine described the album as follow:  ?Total Abuse's pungent blend of eighties thrash, grinding proto-grunge, and waves of both the new and no variety, distills every extreme punk subgenre of the last 30 years into a 25 minute barrage of shearing guitar noise and sonic annihilation.?  The CD format includes tracks from their SEX PIG 7? and DEMO.  Two limited variations are available via the online store.  Ships out in early November.

NITAD - After a number of 7? releases in 2006 and 2007, NITAD offers its first album with 12 new tracks of mid tempo hardcore punk.  Where as their earlier records were more straight forward fast hardcore, this time around, NITAD have taken a slowed things down slightly to a mid tempo speed and sound like a less layered / more raw FUCKED UP (hidden world period).  Excellent artwork to be avoided under the influence of any hallucinogens.  LP available for pre-order via the online store with a limited edition two color silk screened poster. Ships out in early November.

From Profane Existance
NITAD ? Ibland Kan Man Inte Hindra Sig Sjalv CD
I new this band from Stockholm, Sweden had a 7" on Deranged Records.
Never did pick that up.  I pretty much give anything from Sweden a
listen.  I like a lot of what comes out of there.  Sure enough, I like
this too.  Straight forward punk in the early 80s vein melding one
part US punk and the other Scandinavian.  A modern reference would be
Career Suicide meets the Regulations with Swedish lyrics.  Music that
sounds stripped down and yet it's still energetic and charging.  There
is an LP version of this released by Deranged.  The CD version is
chock full of extras with bonus tracks that include all the previous
EP's .    Chalk up another one for the
Swedish!

From NoFrontTeeth magazine UK - OK, this you NEED. This is fucking sick?this is everything NITAD have recorded to date!!! In case you're unaware, Sweden's NITAD play old fashioned, late '70's / early '80'S  hardcore punk with a big nod to ANRGY SAMOANS, ZERO BOYS etc and shit do they do it well?this is so fucking good it's ridiculous. So here you get the 12 track debut full-length plus a further 19 tracks from earlier EPs including the  'Varlden Maste Do' 7", the 'Ge Oss Mer' 7", their cuts from the split with KVOTERINGEN EP, 'Gubbjavel' from the 'European New Breed Compilation Tape' plus an out-take and some demos?that's a lot of killer shit right there! I can't stress how fucking necessary this is, this is amazing shit right here that you need to get with!!!

CAREER SUICIDE - sars 7?- Repress of their classic second 7?, remastered, repackaged, and better sounding than ever. After a bleak spring in quarantine, these guys decided to pick up their gear and get some new tracks on wax, and the result is nothing short of greatness. 4 new tracks of snotty pissed hardcore punk. They have been rightfully compared to Boston's FU's, Angry Samoans, and early Dischord titles. Features Jonah from FUCKED UP on the guitar.  Limited edition colored vinyl available for pre-order.  Ships out in early November.

available now:

CAREER SUICIDE sars 7? repress colored and black vinyl

BRUTAL KNIGHTS - NEW CD compiles their recent LIVING BY YOURSELF 12? (DERANGED/PTRASH 2008), MY LIFE MY FAULT 7?, LIFE AIN?T COOL 7?, TERRIBLE EVENINGS 7? and PTRASH compilation track ? 25 tracks only previously available on vinyl. These new tracks were recorded by the band themselves in their practice space and dare I say it is their most suitable recording to date.  Besides the production, these new tracks are easily BRUTAL KNIGHTS best material to date. ?Living by yourself? continues in the retarded auditory tradition that is BRUTAL KNIGHTS and this time around, they are also complimented by a stunning full color packaging designed by the just as unbalanced SERIPOP http://www.seripop.com .  BK was not only voted as the best ?punk band? in Toronto by NOW magazine for the third year in a row, their recent ?feast of shame? LP was selected as one of the top 10 ?BEST PUNK ALBUMS of the YEAR? by Exclaim magazine.  BK are playing a bunch of shows in October including Eastern Canada and a second full European tour is in the works for spring 2009.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / DERANGED AUGUST UPDATE

Hold tight, it?s a long one.

TRANZMITORS - Loads going on with the TRANZMITORS.  First off, they are playing a few shows in Texas including the WILD WEEKEND POWERPOP festival along side THE BOYS, THE POINTED STICKS and many others.  See their myspace for dates. Their new 12? EP will be available for sale at those shows and for those who pre-ordered, my copies are scheduled to arrive on the first week of September.  In addition to this new 12?, a compilation 12? is getting close to completion and will include tracks from their now sold out singles and one excellent track which has not yet received the vinyl treatment.  A CD format of both 12?s is also scheduled to come out later this year.  In the meantime, here is the information for their new 12? which is available on limited colored vinyl.

TRANZMITORS 12? EP DY122
The return of Vancouver?s TRANZMITORS is here is the form of an exploding 4 track EP of powerpop excellence! These new tracks demonstrate an obvious progression from their extremely well-received 2007 album by delivering even catchier, more melodic, and tighter songs than previous releases. This EP includes three original and one fabulous cover of the Moondogs ?Who?s Gonna tell Mary?.  Superb song writing and killer production make this EP the TRANZMITORS best release to date.  Featuring ex- and current members of The Smugglers, The New Town Animals and The Parallels, the power pop combo take their musical cues from bands like The Buzzcocks, The Undertones, the Boys and The Exploding Hearts.

TOTAL ABUSE - No the album is not yet available for pre-order but will be very shortly and yes there will be a limited edition.  Just waiting on the final artwork which I expect in early September.  In the meantime I will say this - the record is incredible. Here is a recent review from a profile interview done on TOTAL ABUSE

SKYSCRAPER #28 Total Abuse's pungent blend of eighties thrash, grinding proto-grunge, and waves of both the new and no variety, distills every extreme punk subgenre of the last 30 years into a 25 minute barrage of shearing guitar noise and sonic annihilation.'

STATUES - Sudbury?s STATUES are slowly working on a new album and playing the odd show here and there. In the meantime, their recent TERMINAL BEDROOM CD has been receiving some really excellent reviews.  Don?t believe me, here goes:

EXCLAIM August 2008 We?ve already expounded the virtues of these Sudbury natives (and at least one of the seven-inches that this CD release pulls together), but it?s worth doing again. These guys are making some of the best power pop in years, and they?re doing it with the kind of daring originality you rarely see in a band so married to genre eras (in this case, ?70s punk and ?80s power pop). If you missed the band?s tour-only double seven-inch set Crooked Fingers, Broken Hands ? it would be pretty understandable, they were in Europe most of the time ? this is a pretty crucial CD compilation. Powerful tracks like ?Husbands and Wives? and ?Adult Teeth? take up residence alongside G.G. Allin, Pointed Sticks and K-Tels covers, and the results just rule. Plus, there?s the new, unreleased ?Save It,? which, surprise, surprise, is fantastic. Sudbury, who knew?

MRR September 2008 Bombs away ginger, I just hit the fuckin? jackpot.  I love this band.  I ain?t gonna hide behind my many macho insecurities, and if Bruce Roehrs wasn?t right beside me, I?d cry.  It?s that good.  Taking everything I love about punk: unbridled energy, hooks by the dozen, melody that would put Simon and his mate Garfunkle to shame, some post-punk artiness, and tunes that would have the most avid anti-dancer grinding his moneymaker to a broken stump.  THE ATTRACTIONS, THE KINKS, THE BUZZCOCKS, XTC, THE JAM all come leaping to mind.  Eleven tracks of STATUES previously released singles, EPs, and what-nots, with one unreleased gem - do yourself a favor and go get this.

CHART Call me guilty of stereotyping, but this isn't what I'd expect to hear from a Sudbury, Ont. band. This trio flawlessly capture the magic of late '70s and early '80s British punk and power pop while whipping through a dozen songs in just 20 minutes. "Distance/Duration" is jagged yet melodic, "No Time" has a chant-along chorus and they make GG Allin's "Dead Or Alive" sound like The Buzzcocks. While you'd swear these guys are from across the Atlantic, they also pay tribute to Canada's Pacific coast by covering early Vancouver punk/pop bands The Pointed Sticks on "You Must Be Crazy" and The K-Tels on "Where Are You?" Then there's the obligatory Ramones acknowledgement with "Rocket To Russia." I don't know why I haven't heard of Statues until now, but here's my first contender for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize. YOUNG OFFENDERS ? The new single is out and absolutely rips. I still have copies of the limited colored vinyl for those interested.

Two new tracks from San Francisco?s YOUNG OFFENDERS.  Their recent 7? on Parts Unknown was not only very well received by various magazines but also made numerous Maximum Rock N Roll staff picks for TOP TEN records of 2007.  This new single offers two more tracks of well executed post-punk and power pop blend with loads of hooks and power ? this band should be huge!  Think the Adverts, early Gang of Four and Really Red.

MRR September 2008 On this, their third single, Uncle Doug Dawg (pronounced: Doog), two more bald dudes, and a burly ass pool skater bring the masses two more sickeningly infectious tunes of street-savvy pop bites to prove just how well they can repeatedly pen a catchy fuckin? tune.  Throw some EATER, some early 80?s mod revival, (good) power-pop, and some MARKED MEN in your ear, and you are left with a gel that sticks to your being like a rat in a glue trap.  My only complaint: too short!  Can?t wait for their next one.

SUSPECT PARTS ? New 7? out now!  Featuring Justin Maurer from the CLOROX GIRLS / RED DONS and Chris Bell from the BRIEFS. While spending time in Europe, both came together and wrote two originals and a cover of ?To Stone? from THE TWO CHEQUES (1963, Louisiana).  ?Seventeen Television? is the standout track and brings to mind a more anthemic punk version of the CLOROX GIRLS with Justin on both vocals and guitar duties.  Limited editions available in three variations - black vinyl, blue vinyl and as a large hole 45rpm also.

MRR September 2008 This is the new band from exiled CLOROX GIRLS main man Justin Maurer.  It?s no secret that Justin can write a pop song.  Here he delivers two angst-y, energetic gems (reminiscent of THE ADVERTS as well as any number of late 70?s power pop acts), and a TWO CHEQUES cover positively dripping with 60?s reverb melancholy.  It?s definitely a departure from the CLOROX GIRLS, and in a welcome direction.  Any fan of that band should check this out, as should anyone who thought that the GIRLS were heading too far into pop punk territory.  Great stuff.

TRISTESS - HOG & LAG BLUES LP-This is TRISTESS 3rd vinyl output and easily their best to date.  Actually, I would go as far as saying this is likely one of the top 5 best European records of the last five years, it is just that good.  For those unfamiliar, TRISTESS features two members of THE REGULATIONS and E.T.A, and one member from THE VICIOUS and DS-13, and play straight forward punk rock heavily influenced by obscure late 70?s Swedish punk rock like THE INCEST BROTHERS, GLO, and KRIMINELLA GITARRER.  Never heard of those bands? No worries because what it comes down to is the fact that TRISTESS play superbly catchy mid-tempo punk rock. Though I would not necessarily compare their sound to Denmark?s GORILLA ANGREB, they do share some similarities in the sense that they both play punk rock heavily rooted in the first wave of punk, sing in their native language, and both play it extremely well.
HOG & LAG BLUES is being released in Europe by NYVAG records and DERANGED taking on the centre of the universe - North America. Both pressings have different colored covers and vinyl and both are available for pre-order in the online store.  Should have this out in early October.

THE IMPULSE INT?L - THE REAL KID b/w THE WORLD HATES ME 7?-Here we have the second single from NJ?s (by way of Florida) IMPULSE INT?L and it?s another power pop gem.  As a comparison, the IMPULSE INT?L remind me of PAUL COLLINS BEAT?s ROCK N ROLL GIRL which pretty much means they play extremely catchy power pop . Their first single (also on DERANGED) received top notch reviews (see below) and this is more of the same brilliant sound.  An album is now in the works and an EP on MUTANT POP records is expected any day now.

RAZORCAKE #45 Straight to the point, this is a great single. I mean a really great single! Both sides are absolute brilliance. Two songs that perfectly illustrate why singles rule. "Arm the Girls" and "Run and Hide" will make you feel completely alive. So catchy it's unreal. Power pop done right. Sounds like something Bomp! would have released thirty years ago, and yet this is in the here and now, fresh and with a shelf life longer than a box of Twinkies.

MRR #301 Snappy, poppy, and as jumpy as a '77 punk on a pogo stick. Sharp bursts of the JAM mix in with that super rare power pop sound from the late 70's that all the kids seem to be rubbing balls to nowadays. The tunes will stick - you'll be singing these ones all the way to the dole office and back. If you've been digging the TRANZMITORS GENTELMEAN JESSE, STATUES and all the other new breed of punked up mods then you'll absolutely love this. Another winner from the label you all love to hate... get over it.

JERSEY BEAT Hitting with the same kinetic hyperactivity of Peter and the Test-Tube Babies? classic ?Banned from the Pubs?, ?Arm the Girls? is a track designed for those who loved punk?s earliest, most pure elements. I loved the energy and enthusiasm here, and any song that ahs the lyrics, ?We had alcohol, I spent the night in her room? is fine by me! The B-side is similar in nature to its counterpart, with a pure 60?s rock sound that would make the members of the Dave Clark Five smile. The pounding, rhythmic force of ?Run and Hide? was a shot of pure sugar. The chorus, partly due to its simplicity and partly due to its hook, will not leave your brain for days. Go get this!

RAZORCAKE  This New Jersey trio is comprised of ex-members of pop punk darlings Dirt Bike Annie...competent, catchy, jangly power pop...Musically, I?d toss it somewhere between the Mick-fronted Clash songs and any number of the essential ?70s power pop bands...Fun and dance-y..

WHITE LUNG - MAGAZINE 7?-After a short hiatus while Mish (singer) spent part of 2007 in Europe, Vancouver?s WHITE LUNG return with their most triumphant 2nd 7? featuring three new tracks which pick up where their first 7? left off.  For those who missed their amazing debut 7? on HOCKEY DAD records, I included some reviews below and as if you still can?t read the writing on the walls, well I?ll do my best here.  Take 1 part BIKINI KILL and mix it to 1 part early UK post punk (like WIRE) and you get WHITE LUNG!  With any luck we should see an album in 2009!
I am now accepting preorders on this little gem and yes limited colored vinyl is available!

DISCORDER Nov 2007 White Lung smack us upside the heard with their debut EP, and leave us dizzy with their post-punk snarl. Singer Mish's sexy growl conjures up a young Jade Blade or Penelope Houston, while guitarist Natasha slices and chops her way through tracks like "Amy White Out". Bassist Grady and Drummer Anne-Marie (also of the Riff Randells) lock in an airtight rhythm strike that makes listeners want to dance, particularly on the cut "Breaking Boxes". Think of a perfect blend between Mika Miko and the Bags. These gals have hit the ground running and definitely impress.

EXCLAIM MAGAZINE Featuring members of the Riff Randells and the now-defunct Automatic Fancy, Vancouver's White Lung combine the restlessness of Wipers-infused garage punk with a messy Kill Rock Stars aesthetic. Local Garbage, the band's debut seven-inch, goes straight for the jugular, demonstrating the band's ability to write classic-sounding punk songs with new ideas. "Local Garbage" fills the A-side with a plodding bass line that leaves room for the angular guitar and pissed-off vocals. "Breaking Boxes" starts the B-side with a more melodic approach, replete with infectious guitar work and a pulsing rhythm section. Finishing the record, "Amy White Out" builds off scraped guitar to create a song that's both angular and memorable. By employing three unique ideas in such a short time, White Lung demonstrate their versatility and suggest big things to come with future releases.

STREETHAWK MAGAZINE It?s probably a major music writer faux pas to directly rip off the label write up when describing a record, but when it?s bang on, what are you going to do? The guy that put out this slab of vinyl describes White Lung as ?Bikini Kill covering Wire at your favourite punk house,? and it?s hard to come up with something more accurate.
White Lung?s first release (outside of some home job cassettes) is characterized by instrumentation that takes Pink Flag?s economical riffage and injects a little more looseness into the proceedings, with singer, Mish, doing her best Kathleen Hanna over top of the din. It?s also worth noting ? with no disrespect to Wire, because they?re awesome ? that Colin Newman and his band of limey art school drop outs sort of sound like pansies. White Lung comes off as anything but.
Teaming the title track with ?Amy White Out? and ?Breaking Boxes? on the flipside, the only drawback to this ?debut? is that it?s a bit of a tease at a mere three songs long. With the band currently on hiatus (Mish is overseas until the New Year), sadly, this is all we?re going to get for a while too.

WIRE MAGAZINE 289 by Byron Coley Great Vancouver punk quartet that combines a sort of classic West Coast punk vocal sneer with early Riot Grrrl articulation and sheets of throbbing post-core guitar. At their best they sound like Bikini Kill doing a cover of Minor Threat's cover of Wire's "12XU"

TERMINAL BOREDOM Debut from this all-girl Vancouver four-piece, featruing ex-Riff Randells, but there's little to no remnants of that band's sound in White Lung."Local Garbage" recalls classic LA-female-fronted punk, Avengers are the obvious comparison, but I think the VKTMS might be a more apt touchstone, particlularly on the vox. Sounds great and angrier than recent Euro-clones of this style like The Vicious or Gorilla Angreb. B-Side has two more, one tense and rhythmic blast of punk with a quite killer and really rousing guitar sound ("Breaking Boxes") and one post-punker, with a slight nod in the direction Mika Miko are looking in and a dash of Bikini Killy brashness. Great scraped-guitar action too. Whatever it is The Coathangers are doing wrong, White Lung are doing right.

RAZORCAKE #41 These Canadian Ladies know exactly what they're doing: taking all that great proto-wave, punk-before-mass herding, punk-before-"disco ain't so bad!", before-the-fall tracks of Wire (Pink Flag), Gang of Four (Entertainment!), and the Avengers (self titled), picked up a Kathleen Hannah cabinet and microphone along the way (circa Reject All American), leapt over the last decade while steering clear of any pop punk or rock'n'roll, and reconfigured the pieces to an old jigsaw with no missing pieces. That's much harder than it sounds, and I'm enjoying this 7" quite a bit. Nice surprise.

DISTRO- Recently added some great new items in the online store including the new ASTA KASK LP, Knugen Faller LP, JEFFIE GENETIC LP, Dangerloves 7?, etc?  I am also expecting the OBSERVERS ?walk alone? 7? and both Kakka-hata 77 7?s soonish which are excellent.  I cannot recommend the ASTA KASK LP enough - not as great as their previous stuff but still GREAT!!

PRE-ORDERS- There was a delay with the VIOLENT MINDS 12? vinyl at the pressing plant, which delayed the majority pre-orders. For those who have been patiently waiting on their pre-orders, all 200 plus pre-order packages are now in the mail ? expect them soon.  Again thanks for the patience and enjoy.

DIGITAL DOWNLOADING- There has been an increasing demand for some of my releases to be available via digital downloading.  I recently made available a good portion of the DERANGED catalogue for digital downloading.  Current titles available for downloading include the new RED DONS album, TRANZMITORS, CAREER SUICIDE, BRUTAL KNIGHTS, VIOLENT MINDS, FUCKED UP, etc?.  These are available from all the usual culprits such as Itunes, Napster, and Emusic.

RED DONS- Now accepting pre-orders for the RED DONS? first album ?Death to Idealism?.  Limited colored vinyl will once again come as two options, 200 copies of each blue and white vinyl. CD format comes out on the second week of September, with the vinyl format coming out mid/late September.  The Red Dons are the continuation of the Observers. After members abruptly left the band in 2005, Douglas Burns, the Observers? lead singer, artist, and primary songwriter teamed up with Hajji Husayn to continue on with the band. Next, Justin Maurer (Clorox Girls) on guitar and re-named this new line-up the Red Dons. Death to Idealism is the group?s first full-length album, and is perfect for fans of the Vicious, No Hope For the Kids, Gorilla Angreb, Clorox Girls, and of course the Observers.
As to be expected, this record stays in tune with the melancholy, melodic, and sometimes unpredictable punk sounds of the Observers, and even features the excellent ?Walk Alone? track which appeared on a previous Observers 7? . Vinyl version comes out in September with full color gatefold cover.  The Red Dons are currently on an extensive European tour with an full tour of the USA planned for later 2007.

***The gatefold covers for this record makes shipping individual mailorder copies heavier than your average 12? and thus more expensive.  A few suggestions, if you would like both colored versions, I added a package deal in the online store that includes both versions and will save significantly on postage.  For those only interested in one version of the album, you can add about 3 x 7?s or cds without your postage total changing so you get more for you dollar.  For those interested in ordering a bunch of records or would like surface shipping (international locations only), email me at derangedyouth@hotmail.com to figure out some options.

VIOLENT MINDS- Both ?We Are Nothing? 12?, ?Just Kicked In? 7?, and a CD compiling both are now out.  First off their ?We Are Nothing? 12?, recorded by Zach (ex-SHARKATTACK) and Justin from MINDERASER on drums over a year and a half ago and features some of VIOLENT MINDS fastest tracks to date.  Straight forward hardcore stripped of polish -  just raw distorted hardcore delivered at high velocity.  Second, their ?Just Kick In? 7? includes 4 new tracks recorded in 2006 and features a more MOTORHEAD inspired VIOLENT MINDS.   Plague by countless setbacks in the last two years, VIOLENT MINDS are now back and these three new releases along with the VERY great ?eye of death? 12? on PARTSUNKNOWN records should send a loud and clear message that VIOLENT MINDS are active once again and in all likelyhood touring Europe later this summer. Fans of DISCHARGE, MOTORHEAD and early American hardcore like NEGATIVE APPROACH take notes.  Limited colored vinyl for both the 12? and 7? are still available via the online store.

TOTAL ABUSE- The first vinyl offering by ex- Snobs will not disappoint.  Their demo made some waves and these new tracks step it up a notch ? just as raw and fast but way more controlled.  Basic primal HC with loads of speed and hooks that?s been compared to a mix of DRI and early Boston HC like Deep Wound.     Preview track available at www.myspace.com/derangedrecords

HAYMAKER- A small repress of their monster LP is on its way ? should be here in 2-3 weeks.  I still need to put the finishing touches to the compilation/discography album.  Hoping to have it done before the end of 2007.

86 MENTALITY- DC?s Terror Boys are BACK with their third slab of wax entitled ?Final Exit?.  Both their earlier 7?s on GRAVEMISTAKE records are absolute shredders and this new 7? entitled ?final exit? follows in the same vein of oi inspired hardcore punk.  These six new tracks are full of crushing power that won?t let down fans of tough early American like Negative Approach and S.O.A and early BLITZ.  www.myspace.com/derangedrecords

POISON CONTROL- The Violent Years 7? is POISON CONTROL?s first and in all likelihood, their last release.  Though this Boston band has already called it quits, the four tracks are sure to leave folks wanting more.  Solid mid-tempo US hardcore  check  www.myspace.com/derangedrecords

VIOLENT ARREST- Their new 7? comes out the second week of September and features 10 new tracks of Boston worshiping hardcore from three quarters of the former members of the U.K.'s original hardcore blasters RIPCORD and HERESY.  While on the topic, the VIOLENT ARREST CD is now out. It compiles both their ?s/t? 12?, the upcoming 7? and ttwo bonus tracks.  For pre-order information on colored vinyl for the new 7?, check the online store.

TRANZMITORS- The TRANZMITORS are back from the UK and will be going into the studio again this October to record a new 12? EP for DERANGED.   The reviews from their ?s/t? album on DERANGED have surpassed expectations but we ain?t  complaining.  Here they are:

Razorcake
Hello Top Ten of 2007. With this, the release of the Tranzmitors? first full-length, I was seventy-five percent expecting that they?d collect all of their 7?s, add a song, slap it on the butt, and call it a day. Nope. Nine new ones and a Scientists? cover. It?s a clich?, but in this instance it?s true. You get different beasts from this record at differing volumes. At lower, ?driving the folks around in their minivan in traffic? volumes, it?s much more Elvis Costello, Vapors, and soft melody, but when it?s rattling the plaster on the ceiling, the Jam and Exploding Hearts slice through the speakers. All this is basically me naming bands I really like?all of who embrace power pop?and the Tranzmitors not only make me think of them, they elbow themselves into the lineup right beside them, grinning madly. Highly recommended. ?Todd Taylor

MRR #292
The cleaner, poppier, and dare I say more radio friendly this band has become, the more I love them.  Perfect power pop meets the classic ?79 mod revival sound that I worship.  If there?s any musical justice this band will be big, as they are without question head and shoulders better than all those Brit-pop pretenders, possessing way more respect for history, integrity, and song writing clout.  (Do you really think those hair-farming posers THE ENEMY have ever heard of THE SCIENTISTS, who the TRANZMITORS cover brilliantly?)  The chops of THE JAM, the energy of THE CIRCLES, some of that quick fire pop of SUPERGRASS, and the smartass swagger of PULP all wrapped up in the punk smugness of THE BOYS.  Four tracks in and I?m giving this the MRR badge of honor usually reserved for the end of year winner; guess I didn?t have to wait long.  Brilliant.

Exclaim
The much-anticipated full-length debut from Vancouver?s Tranzmitors is here and as far as albums go, it doesn?t get much better than these ten tracks of pop punk bliss. As the very first note creeps out, the combustive energy of the Tranzmitors takes hold and doesn?t let up. Comprised of current and former members of the Smugglers, the New Town Animals and the Parallels, the Tranzmitors? style would find a happy home with fans of the Pointed Sticks, Clorox Girls, Buzzcocks and early Damned. Combining tinges of surf and sunshine with straight-ahead punk energy and perfect pop sensibilities, the Tranzmitors are undoubtedly poised to win the hearts of even the most jaded music fans. The album?s final song, ?Everyone Wants to Lose Control,? seems a fitting sentiment to finish on, because losing control is exactly what this music will make you want to do.

Now Wave
Deranged's official line on the Tranzmitors album goes like this:
"Containing ex and current members of The Smugglers, The New Town Animals, and The Parallels, the power pop combo take their musical cues from bands like The Buzzcocks, The Undertones, and The Exploding Hearts."
That's a pretty spot-on sales pitch. But on this release, Vancouver's Tranzmitors broaden their '77 pop/punk approach by incorporating elements of new wave synth pop and 2 Tone ska. The combination of such influences with the distinct "Britishness" of the band's vocals has this album sounding like a long-lost relic from England circa 1981. No wonder the vinyl issue of this thing will be the first Stiff Records LP release in 20 years!
A lot of people who loved all the Tranzmitors singles seem let down by this full-length debut. And perhaps because of that, my expectations for this release were lowered. Boy, was I ever in for a surprise! This album's freakin' great! Chock full of big, buoyant hooks and zinging, instantly-catchy choruses, these songs are a pop lover's delight. Some songs vigorously work the Buzzcocks/Pointed Sticks blueprint. Others pick up from Jeff's solo project, Jeffie Genetic and his Clones (most underrated Dirtnap album ever!). And a few are reminiscent of late '70s/early '80s UK punk acts crossing over to the pop world - think Madness, The Members, or the Mick Jones side of The Clash. This is a sunny, relentlessly infectious collection of songs that's just perfect for the summer season. Even the aching, heartbroken love songs will leave you feeling good. I rarely dare to compare new bands to the Exploding Hearts. But if you listen to songs like "Something's Going On" and "Why Don't Boys Cry", the similarities are impossible to deny.
Working in a sub-genre too often characterized by paint-by-numbers copyism, the Tranzmitors manage to vary the playbook. Such things as doo-wop harmonies, '50s rock n' roll leads, offbeat guitar rhythms, and chirpy synthesizer riffs are seamlessly worked into the prevailing powerpop motif. And achoring it all are strong, emotionally-charged vocals and sharp, engaging songs. If memory serves me right, "Beating Up My Heart" was originally a Jeffie Genetic song. It returns here and benefits greatly from the full band treatment. Other standout tunes include "Teen Man", "Plastic Genocide", and "Do I Really Wanna Know" (the first three tracks on the album - how's that for sequencing?!). And while I've heard better versions of The Scientists' "Last Night", that particular cover selection does net these guys major taste points.
Okay, I'll say it: you naysayers are wrong. You all smoke crack and sleep with midgets. Your ears are made of cheese. This album is powerpop gold!

Emusic features/spotlight
One of the few new releases that has found its way into rotation on my iPod is the self-titled record by the Tranzmitors. The group is comprised of members of various Candian punk bands, but who?s in the band isn?t nearly as important as who they sound like. Mashing up All Mod Cons-era Jam with Green Day circa Gilman St. (and maybe more than a little Ric Ocasek), Tranzmitors write songs long on melody and energy. This is perfect hot-weather music, an aggravated faux-Brit pout bop-bop-bopping across elastic guitars, simple two-line hooks repeated over and over until they?re indelible. These are the kind of songs you can sing along with before they end; maybe that?s why I?m gravitating toward this so often. After one listen, it already feels familiar.

BRUTAL KNIGHTS- Deranged is working on a new 12? by BK which will compile tracks from their upcoming Ptrash 12? and Burning Sensation 7? with different artwork and a slightly different tracking.  Euro tour below:
