Non-Music Shit / Re: Artie Lange vs Joe Buck

I thought the only thing that kinda sucked was when he pulled the "I'm making eighty grand, you make $11/hr" line on Jason Sudakis...when he does that shit he sounds like such a douche, but I've been an Artie fan since my friend Glenn and I were the only ones in the theater laughing our asses off at Dirty Work.

The aforementioned Bob & Doug, Steve Martin (Let's Get Small - perhaps my favorite comedy record of all time), Pryor, Cheech & Chong, yes even Cosby (don't listen to him much anymore but I have almost every one of his records and I loved them growing up) and the great Bill Hicks are all big favorites.  George Carlin's stuff right up until his death is a must.  Monty Python's Matching Tie & Handkerchief is probably their best one...National Lampoon's Thats Not Funny, Thats Sick is essential shit...Lewis Black's The End Of The Universe and David Cross' Shut Up You Fucking Baby are classics of the new Millenium....There's an album by The Credibilty Gap which is David Lander, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer and some other guy who I can't remember his name right now -- it's not as good as you want it to be, but the bit about the blaxploitation-style Martin Luther King Jr movie is great.

Is there some story behind the Fut?  That name sounds so familiar...

EDIT:  Oh yeaahhh....
"Have You Heard The Word" regularly appears on Beatles Bootlegs as a 'long lost' Beatles recording.
Here follows the true story, and full details of the recording and subsequent releases.

Two Australians Steve Kipner and Steve Groves arrived in England early in 1969 and were signed by Maurice Gibb for his new production company under the band name of "Tin Tin". Maurice Gibb already knew Steve Kipner, as Steve was the son of Nat Kipner, who had been involved with the Bee Gees last Australian album, plus Steve had recorded the Gibb song "Little Miss Rhythm and Blues" with his band "Steve and the Board."

Kipner and Groves had written a song entitled "Have You Heard The Word" which they intended to record at their next recording session at which Maurice Gibb was due to produce. At the rehearsal session in August 1969 at the I.B.C. studio in London, Maurice arrived with his wife (at the time), Lulu, and her brother Billy Laurie, plus most importantly for this destined for legendary status session, a bottle of Johnnie Walker scotch !

The bottle was consumed by all, which left the band too drunk to sing, so just for a joke the two Steve's, Maurice Gibb and Billy Laurie put on headphones and crowded around the studio mike. Using a backing track for the intended song that had been recorded earlier by Kipner and Groves, they launched into a Beatles impersonation (with deliberation). The only recording was made live, with no overdubs made afterwards. Basically, it was just a good laugh ... a good sing-song ... then everyone went home.

The song was NOT intended for release, and the tape of the session's movement from the studio to the cutting room is unknown, although I suspect a recording engineer somewhere out there could complete that part of the story.

The track appeared on a single in 1970 on the Beacon label (catalogue number BEA 160), which although could be bought through legitimate record shops (as indeed I did), it is now considered to be a slightly unofficial release. Under the unknown band name of The Fut, the word on the streets was that this WAS a Beatles "undercover" release.
The instrumental B-side, "Futting", is reported as being an unrelated piece of filler.
(Incidentally, amongst my other Beacon records, I also have BEA 161 which is the GREAT single "Evil" by U.F.O.)

In May 1974 Abigail Music registered a US copyright for Kipner and Groves of the song.

From then on, the track appeared firstly on the bootleg album "Have You Heard The Word" on the infamous CBM label (catalogue number WEC 3624) in 1975 see it here, followed by many other Boots over the years.

One final twist to the saga of "Have You Heard The Word", is that Yoko Ono also registered a U.S. copyright under Lenono Music for John Lennon on 20th September 1985 !

That all said, it IS a very good song that at the time was definately spot on in the Beatle style of words and music, and is worthy of being in the core collection of any Beatles fan.

Anyone else digging on this record?  It's in the "only thing I'm listening to" pile right now.  Just great stuff...don't know why it took so long for me to actually find a way to hear it, having known about it for so long but hey, what are you gonna do at this point.  Anyway.  I recommend it, if that means anything to anyone.

I admit I liked the second X-Files movie, it reminded me of a good episode of the show.  But c'mon, remember the series finale?  Watch that episode (if you can make it through that piece of shit again) and then watch where they pick up the story in that 2nd movie.  They would've been better off doing the whole Scully wakes up goes into the bathroom and finds Mulder in the shower and she realizes all that shit since the end of season 7 was a dream.  And that black oil didn't just dry up, man!

I found the keyboard player's dad's (Phillip Aaberg) Windham Hill album at the St. Vinnie's here for a buck.  I saw the name, thought to myself "I wonder if that's Dan's dad," looked at the back cover and saw a guy that looked a lot like Dan so I picked it up.

I'll never be able to say enough nice things about the Cuts as a group or as guys themselves, so I'll just share the story of how they helped us get in to see Big Star for free at SXSW in 2005 (which I'm sure I've told a million times already so bear with me)...the Cuts and the Mystery Girls were playing shows at SXSW that year, though separately, blah blah blah, our paths cross and we start hanging out, running around Austin.  They helped us sneak into some party and we start getting drunk on the free Red Stripe and before we know it we all pile into their very professional looking touring van and head toward whatever the place was that Big Star was playing at.  We get there and Chuck pulls right into where the vans and trucks of the performers are parked, asking us "who's opening."  I happen to know that the BoDeans are opening so I yell out, "it's the fucking BoDeans."  Security comes up to the van as were pulling in and Chuck says "We're the BoDeans, we're late."  So they direct us to a parking spot and we all get out, mind you there's about 9 or 10 of us there (at least).  The security guy asks us if we have our "passes" to which Chuck replies that no, we don't, we've been running behind.  Security guy asks if all of us are on stage performing because our crew is going to need the "passes".  Chuck says yeah, we're all on stage.  Security leads us to the BoDeans dressing room, nobody's there.  They leave us alone and we all look at each other.  At this point we leave and get lost in the crowd.  Big Star eventually goes on and I watch Big Star about three feet away from Alex Chilton.

But somehow nobody's mentioned Captain Beefheart?

*I* mentioned Lick My Decals Off Baby, I saw someone mention Trout Mask, I think I saw Safe As Milk mentioned but no one mentioned Strictly Personal which is just as good as the rest.

Funhouse is one I thought was so obvious I forgot to mention it.  Did any other Stooges records get mentioned?  I thought about Bo Diddley too, as well as Howlin' Wolf and Otis Redding.  No MC5 either...hey let's start a thread that mentions every album not mentioned in this thread and then maybe every album ever will get a nod somewhere here on Terminal Boredom.

I also forgot to mention the recorded output of Stevie Wonder up to about 1977 or so.

the CD reissue has some cool bonus tracks, including the one with Syd Barrett.  I'm planning on buying that one 4CD box set (name escapes me at the moment) any minute now.

Oh yeah it's coming back.  The Fringe season finale was one of the best season finales in recent memory, for sure.
