everytime people mention the strokes, i think of STP> like a band that starts on the top. they dont have to work hard to get to the top because they started from the top. do you remember the marketing blitz laid out for that band ? i felt it was too much of a commodity. it took me years before i could listen to them objectively. and yeah, there are a couple of good songs, but. . . seems like a band needs a richer identity beyond "product", and they should have known better. and when you start on the top, there's only one way to go.

i've only got love for stone roses. i heard them from a british pen pal (a girl) in 8th grade and i thought it was the coolest thing. they were far from becoming famous, and it was great to have such an unknown thing in the podunk town i lived. good memories of getting stoned, driving to record stores in houston, and making out to that first album (tape). though, at the same time we felt the same way about PAILHEAD.

i've always hated this song ever since i was a little kid. my brother used to sort of "sing it at me", like mouth the words with this finky look on his face. and it made my blood boil. we would literally fight, when he provoked me like this. anyway, years later, after youtube came out, i decided to look it up. H O L Y S H I T. i had never known what these guys looked like or anything. the singer is doing stripper moves. when i watched it just now, wondering if i wanted to even talk about this, i imagined that the singer is talking about heroin more than a love interest( which could be male or female , easily). so that sort of explained his writhing around the mic stand, but the one keyboard player, is staring into space, like the 1000 yard stare, but more like kraftwerk, and its fucking awesome, in how bad it is. i've never hated a song like i hate this one, and there are some zingers in this thread, especially eagles and clapton. you can't hide your lyin' eyes by the eagles is a very close 2nd for me.
increase the hate.

this band is like the butthole surfers of hip hop. i'de been craving a new group to blow my mind, and these guys have left me still wondering. they are really young, and really weird, and have a total grip on every concept of their art from lyrics/music to video to graphic representation. i love when bands can so naturally reveal themselves.

where as you take a group black angels from the same town. trafficking in 60's garage / psych, and yet they don't bother to ape the black lips. maybe they are copying somebody else, but it least they leave the black lips alone. i hate these bands that come out, and haven't bothered working on their own sound. hurp durp, we're the black lips too.
