Rock n roll doesn't offer anything vintage, so he's got something unique off the bat. Agree that being able to rent something gnarly and vintage for recording seems to have more potential to draw clientele.
with all the fests that happen in austin (all year every year) he might be wise to team up with some promoters of back lining equipment. Especially if he has gear that some reunion-rocker is extra particular about playing on.
Also, drop off/pick up from the venue would be extra enticing.

they do a booming biz in austin, peep the website. it's an insane cluster fuck when sxsw rolls around.
They are way more involved that what your bud wants to do; but he may be on to something cool? Is it rental for the time of the gig only?
I go to rock and roll rentals all the time to rent expensive recording mics...very conveniently located around the corner from pro-tape for yr analog needs.
I tried to do this and I can't. I guess I know the first Stooges record would be on the list. And I can think of at least two from the 00's that would make it on there. Maybe the Germs and the first Damned. Other than that I'm not sure. There are too many bands I like a lot but can't pick a favorite album by. And my taste changes all the time too.
