Non-Music Shit / Re: what are you reading?
« on: December 21, 2014, 10:25:24 AM »Currently reading a short novel called "Ningen Shikkaku" by Dazai Osamu in the original Japanese. I think it's usually called "No Longer Human" in English (there's no direct translation of the title that would be natural in English). Like it quite a bit. Very bleak, but caustically humorous. Averaging about ten pages a day, which is pretty good considering how many words I still have to look up given his somewhat archaic style. Finished his "Shayou," or "Sunset" in English, a couple weeks back and was very impressed, especially by the last 30 pages or so, consisting entirely of a long, protracted suicide note from one of the characters. Not sure if it would be as impressive in English or not. When reading it I ask myself at times how I would translate certain passages, and it's way harder than, say, a Murukami Haruki or someone.
young steve i've been a big fan ryunosuke akutagawa. have you read his stuff ? funny thing about him is that i think his first book came out in '56 and the foreward was written by jorge luis borges. how the fuck did borges know about akutagawa in 56 ?! !? anyway, he's one of my favorites in jap lit.
