Non-Music Shit / Re: what are you reading?
« on: December 21, 2014, 10:25:24 AM »
Currently reading a short novel called "Ningen Shikkaku" by Dazai Osamu in the original Japanese. I think it's usually called "No Longer Human" in English (there's no direct translation of the title that would be natural in English). Like it quite a bit. Very bleak, but caustically humorous. Averaging about ten pages a day, which is pretty good considering how many words I still have to look up given his somewhat archaic style. Finished his "Shayou," or "Sunset" in English, a couple weeks back and was very impressed, especially by the last 30 pages or so, consisting entirely of a long, protracted suicide note from one of the characters. Not sure if it would be as impressive in English or not. When reading it I ask myself at times how I would translate certain passages, and it's way harder than, say, a Murukami Haruki or someone.

young steve i've been a big fan ryunosuke akutagawa.   have you read his stuff ?   funny thing about him is that i think his first book came out in '56 and the foreward was written by jorge luis borges.   how the fuck did borges know about akutagawa in 56 ?! !?   anyway, he's one of my favorites in jap lit.

my concern is drunk driving charges.  i used to roll around with weed, beer, etc all over town.   i am a good driver and never had a problem, i just wont take the risks of DWI any more.  and that gets in the way of having a good time at shows.  solutions exist such as cabs, and designated drivers, and we do utilize those where applicable.  but. . .   drinking is so built into my lifestyle, and if its about staying home playing music, or driving a long way and not being able to drink. .  well.  most of the time i'll stay at home.   recently i was lucky to have a designated driver for black lips king khan and it was so awesome.   compared to going to a friends' band and not drinking and feeling bored.   i'm glad i take drinking and driving more serious these days, but i miss the carefree rock n roll days of my 20's where 'anything goes' .

fuck those thieves in the pheremoans.   that's a stupid named band too.  i would kick those shitheads out of their practice space if my flanger disappeared.

yesterday had all the typical soundtrack shit playing.  -  Ligeti, Penderecki, Diamanda Galas, etc.   suitably horrible.

Music Shit / Re: Nick Cave: For Your Consideration
« on: October 29, 2014, 08:21:19 PM »
oh yeah that jasper thing is horrible.  i've been there, as well as the neighboring town , Vider.   no surprises about the ignorance / violence there.  i just got back from lake livingston and there was a convenience store there with a sign that said "obama , the reason we still have our hanging tree.  coldspring, tx. "

so.  they still have a hanging tree ?   they're gonna get obama ?

is this just trolling exercises with nick cave ?  i mean, come on.  give the guy some credit.  he's not above criticism, but. . . .  can't we acknowledge his contributions to underground lounge music ?

ha ha, i like R.E.M.  i saw their guitarist at this friend's wedding the other day.

they had a glass ceiling/floor whatever and you could get under it  and look up girl's dresses.  little girls.

Iceage was decent when i saw 'em.  nothing to write home about.  they have too much hype preceding them, so i think they deliberately trash their own material in a 'we're totally punk' gesture.   why not just be good ?   where's whet bull ?  couldn't he articulate this better than me ?  where the fuck is officer Officer Brad ?   things are getting hostile.

Exile -  i wanna kiss you all over
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJJQpSzDgC0
this was used ironically in a movie a few years back, but reminded me of how much i hate this song.
i was inspired to look it up, never knew the artist, and than i saw this video. .   wtf ! !& !  the way that asshole dances around.
definitely up there with the other frontrunners for worse song.  i would add worse image as well.

a couple more.

Oak Ridge Boys - Elvira

good gawd.  if you were a child of the 70's / 80's  you heard this shit.  there was a TV program called Hee Haw.  everything was terrible.   the guy Bowser on there, he sang plenty of the world's worst songs.   and he did this thing with his hand . . .

we've kind of glossed over things that are maybe even non-songs - The Macarena, U can't touch this, wake me up before you gogo, etc.   but. . . . i would also submit that some bands i like took some major wrong turns.   and that hurts.

the cure- friday i'm in love.
not even putting a link.  that's just enough for now.  i have a thing for these 'how bad can it get' moments.  metallica and lou reed ?
