Good, more toys for rich hipsters.

Jerks who buy $4000 Technics turntables and Dr. Dre Beats headphones will love this.

Those are two different camps; I'm not supporting either, but most people who wear Beats just don't know any better, whereas if someone is dropping $4k for a table they should know they have ten better options before that Technics cash in...

I spent $3k on a VPI Classic 1 but because a- its a work of art and b- I needed something that had perfect motor timing and the ability to clamp an outer grasp for flat records for transcribing for a few radio stations; if it couldn't have paid itself off I'd say someone at home should never spend more than $800 for a table or $1500 for a needle/table combo, and they should really only spend $500.

After that jump there's just nothing worth attaining, which is why this shit is hilarious - if they actually try moving the grooves in for 'longer sides', tracking issues are going to be abound, and making a smaller ellipses for more micro microgrooves is practically impossible if not financially suicide - try and get someone to buy an HD table for $2k to play the record they just put on their Crosley but kept tripping the needle out, they're just gonna take the record back to Barnes & Noble and ask for a refund.

And I've been intrigued by this and found like NOTHING on the background of the idea/company at any recent publication or trade show or anything - these guys straight up showed this blog guy a patent application and said 'write us free PR'... now people are looking them up and talking and they didn't even have to come up with physical product (or chain of complex products to do this in the real world) ... Not as dumb as we might think, but really fucking dirty.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Discogs.com

So I filed a claim against this seller. I normally wouldn't but they charged $16 in postage and would not give me my tracking number, despite my asking several times, until the package had already been stalled and undelivered for over a week. What is the typical result of this? The package is not, and probably will not be delivered. Best case scenario, they send it back to him, probably cause he fucked up the address or something I'd guess, but who knows with USPS, but this dude does have a lot of negative Discogs reviews. So, if the tracking shows this as undelivered, will they generally refund the buyer the money? Ideally, I'd prefer the records to anything, but that doesn't seem to be happening and the seller is just very unhelpful.

Are you asking if USPS or if PayPal will refund you (the buyer) the money?

USPS, if the package was insured, will only give the money back to the person who shipped it, and they have to go through the process of filing a claim. This isn't that hard to do through Stamps.com, god knows what that person would have to do if they need to walk into a Post Office...

PAYPAL will almost always side with you, the buyer, in a case like this, as they recognize the seller to be responsible for choosing what shipping agent they wanted to use, etc. The process direct through PayPal isn't fast or slow, they'll give him like a 48 hour window to respond, then you get a window to respond, then PayPal will look at the case and decide who gets what.

I had this happen with a Today Is The Day record I got off eBay (before PayPal and eBay split, BUT its practically the same situation now), the person claimed media and record were mint condition, but they sent it IN A FLAT BOX, like she walked into the post office, bought a box, shoved the record in it, and shipped it. It came with the record not even in the sleeve, completely damaged, and even before the shipping the record couldn't have been better than G. I opened a case, she said I was trying to rip her off, and PayPal stepped up and was like "HMM NOPE" - shut her account down since I had pictures of how she sent it.

Then two weeks later I get paperwork in the mail from the USPS because she had insured the package and claimed it was damaged in process - turns out the USPS was just saying sorry to both parties involved, and I was not happy about that... I contacted USPS to tell them it was the senders fault, but they didn't even care. So while she got her eBay account shut down, she received the record back in the same condition as it was before, as well as $100 from the USPS. Not a bad scam if you think about it...

Since CES last year, there's a pretty large push by the big guys (i.e. Sony and their stupid ass HX500) to define 'High Resolution Audio' as this vague apex of sound so it can be marketed and deployed to even non-audiophiles, but all of this is total snake oil, and I don't see those hip millennials really giving two shits considering a pro-tools recorded super limited Ariel Pink LP is gonna sound even more like shit on a more expensive system...

There's also something called MQA that's coming out now in the professional recording/playback world that I did a blind study with and found 8 out of 10 times I could place which file was MQA because it sounded WORSE... that gets into how dithering and jitter plays into recording systems so I won't waste anyones time on that here because it doesn't matter, but when you're asking someone to reinvest in an Analog->Digital / Digital->Analog chain (at least a $5k investment), you better hope your snake oil bullshit doesn't actually sound WORSE than the original!

But back to this... I'm sure someone can chime in and play devil's advocate and say you can't tell until you hear it, but i'd like to point out that their argument of 50% greater fidelity is a mathematical impossibility - there's no way you could double the frequency spectrum and even if you could because THE HUMAN EAR ALREADY CAN'T HEAR THE MAXIMUM FREQUENCY able to be produced on current records! So now there'll be even more ultrasonic noise you can't hear, wonderful!

This shit'll never stop, if you have time to waste look into awesome companies like Synergistic Research, gotta get rid of those Dark Waves so you can hear your Natalie Merchant Super Audio CD like it was intended...

Postage rates going back down? Maybe this is just commercial (i.e. Stamps.com account)?

http://links.mkt768.com/servlet/MailView?ms=MjQ5NDMyNTMS1&r=MTM2NDQ2OTc5NDA4S0&j=NzYxODAwNDMxS0&mt=1&rt=0

"We've got great news: Starting April 10, you can expect to see lower USPS rates!

That's right - the USPS has proposed new rates for its Market Dominant Products. With the approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC), the new rates will be approximately 4.3% lower for First-Class Mail, First-Class Mail International, Standard Mail, Periodicals, Media Mail, Library Mail, and Domestic Business Mailing Fees.

One example of the new rates is that First-Class Mail Parcel rates will decrease to $2.45, saving you $0.15 over Commercial Base Rates at 1 to 3 oz.! "

Who knows... Since most of my orders are 1 -2 7"s (so ~8z) I didn't see much difference, except someone bought a Bizarros 2xLP from Greece and I hadn't changed the rates and it was like $8 more than the last time. I'm a nice guy so I just shipped the record without bothering him or anything, I bet that guy wish I had more records he wanted.

If anyone spots the tour edition of the LP (and/or the tour tape) I will gladly compensate someone for picking me up a copy!

Should be at the Baltimore show. If you have not gotten hooked up yet let me know. Assuming I make it I can grab whatever they have.

Why's there gotta be 4 goddamn bands, don't people know how old I am?

Just popped in my mind. ..is it a thing to put a GPS  tracker  IN your package? Like for expensive things? That way no one could deny where it's at.

Not saying I want anything else in my life surveiled...but if it was.optional and I was purchasing something expensive I'd consider it.

This is going to come off dickish, and I truly don't intend it too, but you've never actually had to deal with the USPS on problems with a shipment, have you?

So things like this exist Spy Portable GPS, at $150 its a little pricey but that depends on what kind of stuff you're ordering.

I think Kevin's point should definitely be taken into consideration as well as the general price of GPS tracking; if you've dealt with the USPS after they've lost your package, I doubt even showing them where it exactly is within 3 meters will persuade them. It's a shame, but its the truth.

Same source as the Mute releases from years ago, which were tape transfers. We double checked all versions match the original releases.

Thanks!

What dithering algorithm does it use? Powr? TPDF+? PPHS? J/K looks fine for most conversion. XAct is a free mac program that can do the same, it uses SoX which is a good open source dithering algorithm. http://xact.scottcbrown.org/

If you've got $2k kicking around I'd recommend Saracon. Or if you know how the internet works, it can be free!
