Why don't we do it on Saturday (12/22)? They're open 12-7. We can go there and go get some food (maybe Everette & Jones?) and go to Carlos' party afterward.

Missy and I are working some fancy catered party that day.  She'll be bartending and I'll be watching the kids.  Pray for me.

St. George Spirits, the makers of Hangar One, are introducing the first legal U.S. absinthe to the market now.  According to the SF Gate, "Earlier this year, a lone Washington, D.C., lawyer took on the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau in an attempt to lift the ban. After some legal wrangling, the agency agreed - with some limits."

The article doesn't say what those limits are, so it might not actually contain the active ingredient, wormwood, but I'm guessing that it does in smaller amounts then the strong stuff.

Anyway, they're introducing it in the Alameda Hangar One tasting room in December.  I think this calls for a group trip to sample that bizness, along with all that good vodka.

I am off work starting Thursday, December 20th.  Can you get that day off?
I'd be happy to go on a hanger one vodka tour.

Non-Music Shit / Re: quitting smoking for the new year
« on: December 07, 2007, 02:54:01 PM »
Last time I tried to quit (tried about 6 times now), I actually bought the same book that Steve is talking about...and it worked for about 6.5 days...then I freaked out and decided that it would be a good idea to buy some Bugler rolling tobacco...my logic was that if it took me a minute or two to roll a cigarette, I would smoke less over the course of the day, or even better, get too pissed to continue smoking because of the effort invovled.  Well, it's been about 2 years now and I can roll a cigarette in about 8 seconds, one handed.  Nothing to be proud of.  Then there's the gum, sure it works but it's way more expensive and you'll find yourself addicted to that shit REAL fast.  The patch did absolutely nothing for me.

And for the non-smokers (not ex-smokers), saying shit like "it's all in your head"...that's absolute fucking bullshit.  It's a very physical addiction.

agreed.
i did the rolling tobacco thing too. all i did was get really good at it too.  my father still chews nicotine gum everyday and he hasn't smoked in over 10 years.  gum is just a replacement.

i smoked for ten years, and three years later i am still smoke free!  I don't suggest weaning because when I finally decided to quit I was only smoking three or four cigarettes a day(at one point I smoked a pack a day), but I was still really addicted.  My "moment of clarity" was when I was at a party, without smokes (which was rare), and I tried to bum one from several different people and on one would give me one! well, i had a little smoker meltdown and realized how dependant i was on those three or four a day.  I loved smoking and never wanted to quit but that was too much.

cold turkey it.  it sucks but everytime you smoke again damage your lungs and blood vessels all over again and you are back to square one. i didn't do the patch or gum...  But I work at a vitamin store and stocked up with homeopathic lozenges and this chewable amino acid called L-theanine.  it helps you to relax but won't put you to sleep.  You can also take lobelia, a plant similar to tobacco that latches onto nicotine receptors.  I didn't try that one, but my old manager did and it seemed to help her.

also you have to really WANT to quit, not just do it cuz you think you should. I've talked to a lot of ex smokers who had failed several times at quitting because they didn't want to but tried... and it finally stuck when they were over it.

if you go out, bring something to fidget with or read  something to distract you from the urge to smoke, it helps to have something else to do with your body.  try not to go outside with your friends  at shows or at bars for awhile.

it's all about breaking old patterns

i did smoke a cigarette in January ( i was wasted) thinking i could have a smoke here and there, and I came down with the worst bronchitis.  it sucked so much, i learned my lesson and I'll (hopefully) never go back

good luck!

Music Shit / Re: New Camel cigarette ad namedrops some Termbo's
« on: December 05, 2007, 11:03:29 PM »
here is what dave wrote me:

"so I asked around here and no one is really sure what is up yet.  I
guess Rolling stone is claiming that it is not an ad.  Camel paid
money, but not for anything specific, they just payed for part of the
cost of the mag (I'm sure it prob = the cost of the ad but as
someone here just said, "if anyone knows how to get arround things
I'm sure it is the tobacco companies.")

Anyway I'll keep asking and we'll see if there is anything to be
done.  In a way I imagine that it could hinge on the lawsuits that
some states have filed (saying that since it was a  cartoon it
voilates the law) if those succeed then maybe the whole thing can be
seen as an ad and the use of the band names would then be illegal.

If I hear more I'll let you know."

The whole section is a Camel thing, correct? All I've seen is the scans, and the scans lead me to believe it's
a Camel section. Not unlike when a pharmaceutical company has a section in a magazine and fills it with info about health, etc. (sometimes they are obligated to by law in order to get advertisement.)

my roommate has a subscription to rolling stone, so i just looked at this issue.

it is 100% advertisment.  the camel "welcome to the farm"  sits to let left of the "indie rock universe", and then you open up the "notebook" and its this kind of gatefold section.  so the first thing you open to is a huge camel farm ad, then you have to unstick the pages and then all those bands are listed.  so the whole thing is being hugged by a camel ad.

mine was last christmas.  woke up christmas eve(or maybe christmas day) morning to find the battery stolen out of my car and my walkmen with one of my favorite mixtapes. (FUCK YOU SANTA).  had to go to kragen to buy a battery and the jerks sold me a dead one.  haha.  so i had to wait a few days to get it charged.  things didn't perk up til new years.  2006 blew.

i don't think many of these would qualify as honky tonk but old country there are

faron young, i'll second buck owens and merle haggard, jimmie rodgers (more blues but watch out there's two of them and one sucks) early kitty wells and tammy wynette, early george jones, ernest tubb

i would avoid the 1970's era stuff of most of those who recorded during it
