i smoked for ten years, and three years later i am still smoke free! I don't suggest weaning because when I finally decided to quit I was only smoking three or four cigarettes a day(at one point I smoked a pack a day), but I was still really addicted. My "moment of clarity" was when I was at a party, without smokes (which was rare), and I tried to bum one from several different people and on one would give me one! well, i had a little smoker meltdown and realized how dependant i was on those three or four a day. I loved smoking and never wanted to quit but that was too much.
cold turkey it. it sucks but everytime you smoke again damage your lungs and blood vessels all over again and you are back to square one. i didn't do the patch or gum... But I work at a vitamin store and stocked up with homeopathic lozenges and this chewable amino acid called L-theanine. it helps you to relax but won't put you to sleep. You can also take lobelia, a plant similar to tobacco that latches onto nicotine receptors. I didn't try that one, but my old manager did and it seemed to help her.
also you have to really WANT to quit, not just do it cuz you think you should. I've talked to a lot of ex smokers who had failed several times at quitting because they didn't want to but tried... and it finally stuck when they were over it.
if you go out, bring something to fidget with or read something to distract you from the urge to smoke, it helps to have something else to do with your body. try not to go outside with your friends at shows or at bars for awhile.
it's all about breaking old patterns
i did smoke a cigarette in January ( i was wasted) thinking i could have a smoke here and there, and I came down with the worst bronchitis. it sucked so much, i learned my lesson and I'll (hopefully) never go back
good luck!
