I'm terrified of moving to Oakland. My brother has already promised to buy me a switchblade and a safe before I leave. TERRIFIED.
In Oakland this past month, Tina Lucchese's store/salon was burglarized. And Sarah Dunbar, who owns Pretty Penny (a resale clothing store), was robbed at gunpoint along with a friend. Apparently, she had a bunch of cash on her at the time from a clothing sale of some sort. Both of these incidents happened in "up and coming" areas of North Oakland. I prefer East Oakland where I am never lulled into a false sense of security due to some alleged neighborhood renaissance. I suspect that everybody I see on the street in E. Oak is a miscreant and steer clear at all times.
And get this. Ever since the cops put more patrols on 23rd Ave (around the corner from our apt) they pulled patrols from the "decent" Grand Lake business district. And guess what? Crime increased in the Grand Lake. The Grand Lake has now hired a private security firm because the cops aren't there like they used to be. What a mess.
There's apparently a move afoot to get rid of Mayor Ron Dellums because he's not doing jack about the crime here. Actual quote from the Mayor, "I said to people straight up I came home to do this, 71 years of age. I'm giving it everything that I have. If that's not enough, that's cool. Recall me. and let me get on with my private life." Uh, thanks. Hilary Clinton recently promised him a job in her administration if she gets elected (he endorsed her candidacy), so you can imagine he's really not gonna be doing much of anything now.
When Dellums was elected, there was all of this talk to hire more cops, but the police union is against it because that would mean less overtime for the existing cops.
Welcome to Oakland!
last friday night my friend was robbed on Richmond Ave (close to Piedmont Ave)...he was forced face down to the ground and had a sawed off shotgun put to the back of his neck. they got his wallet and his phone. SCARY.
I've never been robbed but i have been burglarized and my car has lost its radio and its battery. being female, i avoid walking in certain areas at night. Living in west oakland taught me a healthy fear of the streets. can anyone tell me what snowbunny means? oh, and i've had two bikes stolen. (warning: never ever park your bike at macarthur BART, that is where they go to die).
OH! and my coffee shop, the green bean, was broken into on halloween. (thats the same building as my house!)
yay oakland!
