Music Shit / Wax Poetics scans
« on: February 04, 2015, 07:10:38 PM »
Does anyone have scans of these or know where they can be acquired on the free?  I was thinking of scanning them myself but surely someone has already done it.

Music Shit / School me on Earth, Wind & Fire

Probably the wrong board, but whatever, it's more fun this way.  I never listened to these guys (oops), where are the choice nugs?  I became obsessed with the song "Reasons" and got the record it's on (That's the Way of the World), which has some other great stuff.

SSR will dig this if no one else

His best stuff is '77-'81, the years right before he died.  I've spent so much time with Art Pepper's music from this period.  All the 'Widow's Taste' CDs Laurie has released from this period are outstanding (and now some vinyl).  It looks like she's coming out with another Art book for those of you who dig Straight Life (one of the best music memoirs ever)

Pirate radio legend from my hometown.  There's hundreds of hours of this stuff.  I find it strangely addictive.

This one's called "Wiggers"

Cities / Utrecht
« on: May 02, 2012, 12:07:00 PM »
I think there are some people from Utrecht (or Holland anyway) on here so I thought I would ask

Is there a decent place to buy a guitar around here?

Good record stores in the area?

THANKS

Surely they must exist and there must be some really obvious ones.  What say you?

Non-Music Shit / Most dangerous cities in America 2011
« on: October 07, 2011, 08:10:11 AM »
My hometown is #3 on this list (behind Detroit and Memphis), finally some recognition..

http://realestate.yahoo.com/promo/americas-most-dangerous-cities-2011.html

It's a real shithole, for sure.  They don't mention that it also has one of the highest numbers of cops per capita, which obviously makes no difference.

Rockford, IL but no Decatur?  No East St. Louis?  Sheeeeeit

Used Records For Sale/Auctions/Wantlists / SNIX LP
« on: July 06, 2011, 07:17:35 PM »
dictator's 'Oi the set sale' reminded me that I have a copy of SNIX's 'Quand le soleil se levra' available, comes with inserts and a note from the band to some french skinzine.  Sleeve is clean but vinyl is VG.  If interested PM a trade list i guess. Don't want anything heavy for this.

Music Shit / Discharge - Grave New World
« on: November 18, 2010, 12:38:14 AM »
I picked this up for a couple dollars the other day, having never heard it.  I think the guy's mesh shirt and lavish Cleopatra necklace sold me.

I guess the pendulum is starting to swing back the other way on 'Grave New World'.  I'm not buying it, because at the end of the day this record definitely blows.  It's plainly as rotten as everyone always said it was.  However, I do think it's worth spending a couple hours with, if only to get a sense of how bizarre it is.

I'm convinced that these are some of the most absurd vocals ever featured on a rock record.  No fooling.  If you haven't heard it, listen to a song and you'll cringe and laugh but probably disagree.  Listen to the whole thing from start to finish -- which I bet less than ten people have honestly managed to do since 1986 -- and you'll see what I mean.  Seriously, you've got to be fucking kidding me.

It's dismissed as a kind of failed glam metal sell-out attempt, but it isn't glam at all, and really doesn't feel like a sell out.  They obviously believed in what they thought they were doing (whatever that might have been) and spent a fair bit of time making this.  There are some pretty decent riffs scattered throughout.  I have no idea what they were going for but people more into 80s metal can probably tell.  Presumably someone at Rock Hotel Records (pffft) actually listened to this before they agreed to put it out.  I can only assume they heard a mix without the vocals.

I'd be curious to hear from anyone who cares to defend it.  And funny stories from anyone who saw them on this notoriously awful tour.

OK, that's as much as I've thought about Discharge since I was 14.  I guess they made even worse records but I haven't heard those either.
