I also saw Dirty Three in the 90s and they were indeed great (never liked their records). They played to maybe twenty people at a shitty small-town bar on a rainy Wednesday night. I remember the show vividly. That was the best drummer I had ever seen.

The Guilty Have No Past is a good comp of the earlier "cryptofascist Joy Division with trumpets" period. The one I had was a 2CD that included a live show. I feel like this is all pretty far from "essential" so maybe you just don't like it. My next stop would be the photo calendar where he's shirtless and hugging another old gay dude on the beach. Or maybe those limited edition Jew hating collector plates.
