Great show.  Mostly stuff from Good Earth and Only Life, but they eneded with smokin' renditions of Moscow Nights and Crazy Rhythms.  Dave Weckerman is a god of percussion!

Excellent sound for a large outdoor venue.

there's an opening band, so you might not miss much by arriving late.

this looks awesome! ya ever listen to the rockin' john mcdonald show on WORT in madison? some of it was tired oldies, but he also played rawer & obscure garage stuff, including wisconsin bands.  it was excellent music for a low wage pizza delivery shift.

I lived in Madison a long time ago, and I don't remember that show, if it was around. WORT played some good shit, though. Bummed that there isn't a single oldies station left in Milwaukee...there was an OK one when I moved here, but they changed the format last summer/fall. It's kinda sad. One good thing about "up north" is that every town has a decent oldies station that plays both the usual hits and lets some more obscure goodies slip in. Now I just listen to sports or NPR if I even turn on the radio.

I don't have a laptop anymore and my PC sucks, so I haven't been able to hook up my turntable deal...once that gets settled, I'm going to rip some of these and put them up on here, in case anyone is interested.

Is this the dude on WORT that sounds exactly like Kermit the Frog?

cool, i'm definitely interested in hearing this stuff.

it's been a few years since i've lived in madison, but i think rockin' john is the guy you mean.

Made a 90 minute tape of my favorite Wisconsin 60s stuff. In no way am I an expert, and I'm sure there's tons out there I haven't heard, but I think it turned out pretty great. WI wasn't Texas, Ohio, California, or even Minnesota, but there were a good amount of classics and lots of nice b-grade tunes. And yes, the Cords recorded in 1970, but it was on BFTG #1, so good enough for me. And they were friggin' actual MONKS who lived in Pulaski!

Side A:
1.   Benders "Can't Tame Me"
2.   Spacemen "Same Old Grind"
3.   Invasion "Do You Like What You See?"
4.   Jack and the Beanstalks "So Many Times"
5.   Joey Gee and the Come-Ons "She's Mean"
6.   Young Savages "The Invaders are Coming"
7.   Fendermen "Muleskinner Blues"
8.   Blue Boys "I Know"
9.   Love Society "Without You"
10.   Hinge "Come On Up"
11.   Tikis "We're On the Move"
12.   Beverly Moss & the Mossmen "Please Please What's the Matter?"
13.   Medallions "Leave Me Alone"
14.   Shaprels "Fool for Your Lies"
15.   Illusions "The Outcast"
16.   Faros "I'm Cryin"
17.   Fugitives "Come on and Clap"
18.   Wanderer's Rest "You'll Forget"
19.   Cords "Ghost Power"

Side B:
1.   Shag "Stop and Listen"
2.   Impalas "Spoonful"
3.   Robbs "Bittersweet"
4.   Triumphs "Surfside Date"
5.   Noblemen "Dirty Robber"
6.   Rehabilitation Cruise "I Don't Care What They Say"
7.   Joey Gee and the Come-Ons "You Know - 'Til the End of Time"
8.   Underground Sunshine "All I Need is You"
9.   Golden Catalinas "Varsity Club Song"
10.   Wanderer's Rest "Anytime Anywhere"
11.   Gord's Horde "I Don't Care"
12.   Trodden Path "Don't Follow Me"
13.   The Zoo "Gonna Miss Me"
14.   Jack and the Beanstalks "Don't Bug Me"
15.   Rehabilitation Cruise "Mini Skirts"
16.   Mustard Men "I Lost My Baby"
17.   Baroques "Nothing Left to do But Cry"
18.   Bare Fat "Soft"
19.   Challengers "Take a Ride on the Jefferson Airplane"

NP: CCR - Pendulum. CCR has been doggin' me all day, in the stores where I did my errands, out of car stereos, etc.  When I got home, I had to keep chooglin'.

Music Shit / Re: Static party: The Cuts

The cover of my 2/10 LP is much less hilarious - the band is standing by a brick wall, looking quite serious & bummed.  Nonetheless, it is also my favorite and the one that got me into The Cuts.

Awesome live band whose last Chicago show was sadly unattended by the masses.  It was nice to have the elbow room but it must have been less fun for those guys.

Pop Punk / Re: early REM?
« on: June 17, 2009, 06:38:08 PM »

i think you can hear pylon & method actors in the drumming on chronic town and reckoning.

I like REM's version of "Crazy" better than the original. I would even go so far as to say they own it. Although Vanessa Hay could probably stomp a hole in Michael Stipe any day.

i prefer the pylon version, but i'm pretty into pylon these days. still, better then some of their VU covers.

out of the myriad of southern jangle - guadalcanal diary, let's active, the windbreakers - r.e.m. are the only ones that actually sound anything like the influences they were claiming.  becomes very very obvious what they were going for after you hear sneakers, arrogance and silent partner.

i think you can hear pylon & method actors in the drumming on chronic town and reckoning.  buck seems like he had a limited but pretty unique way of playing guitar, and all of the other instruments worked around/interacted with it in a similarly unique way.

my rem fandom back in the late 80's sort of embarrasses me now, but it did get me into some good music. buck dropped lots of names in interviews...he seemed like a big-time record geek and a hipster who was in a band that he knew was not considered hip anymore.

Yeah, I kinda get what you're saying, but the more I listen to it, the more I like it. It seems kinda monochromatic at points, but the songs get stuck in your head. It's a grower, not a shower. And I dig the ambition of it. Honestly, it could almost use some sort of obvious and cliched "interludes," but taken 5 or 6 songs at a time, it's as good as anything that's come out this year.

my first impression was that there was too much material, but after repeated listens, more and more of the individual songs grew on me.  it's gonna be one of my favorites from this year, and i think i will revisit it down the road.

NP: X - Wild Gift - my favorite X record.

Born in Kankakee, IL, but grew up in Green Bay, WI.  Spent some time in between in Rhinelander, WI, as well.

I'm also a FIB by birth.  Born on the south side of Chicago, but grew up in Portage, WI.  Also spent a few years in St. Paul, MN.
