Non-Music Shit / Re: Fuck this city and fuck the New York Times.

It seems so unreal that I can't even begin to feel disgusted.  These people might as well be from Mars....the NY Times is covering the effects of the recession on Mars.

Chicago: Permanent Records, for sure. Good free BYOB in-stores + sick selection = rad.

yep. great in-stores(box elders, kid congo powers, etc), cool staff/owners and and awesome new vinyl in stock.  they get some pretty sweet used stuff, too.  the crustacean records reissue of killdozer's last waltz is down there right now.  someone should buy it.

mirrors - something that would never do - excellent, excellent record. i have played this every day since i got it.
intelligence - fake surfers - catchy as a cold, though i think i like the murkier stuff from the singles & born bad record more.
armitage shanks - 21 punk hits - a great punk band playing great punk rock songs. somehow it works.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Root Canal
« on: May 28, 2009, 11:13:37 AM »
i had a root canal and a few wisdom teeth extracted within the space of 6 months a couple of years back.  the root canal was a breeze compared to the extractions.  that is not surgery or any sort of delicate medical procedure; it is blunt force labor in your mouth with a pair of pliars.  the dentist was swearing and yanking on my tooth like a rusty bolt.  even though i was in sheer agony, i remember feeling happy for the guy when the thing finally came out in a pool of blood.

please take heed of SSR's advice in his post: get as much local anesthetic as you can. when they ask if your mouth is numb, say no and try to get more.

See I got this 'cos I heard the stuff from it that was more punkish, and there is a lot of that. Also kind of glammy as well.  I think the Stormtrooper track did it for me.  But I'm really digging the more metal sounding tracks. I'll have to look into that 1979 comp. And Angel Witch.

Apart from the better known stuff (MAIDEN, MOTORHEAD), the two essential NWOBHM LPs are ANGEL WITCH s/t and DIAMOND HEAD 'Lightning to the Nations'.  Download these, then buy the LPs.

Thanks for the tip. I will see if I can pick these up cheap on cd somewhere. I hated metal as a teen, and it took many years to realize that this was a stupid prejudice for someone who likes hard rock and glam.

How's the NWOBHM comp?  Anything as good as Angel Witch on there?

Welllllll, it's really not an NWOBHM comp-- most pubby hard rock that certainly skirts it, but definitely nothing genre-defining.  Kind of like a 'punk' comp that was all Ultravox!, Subway Sect and Rikki & the Last Days. It's a good listen, though, and well worth picking up.

As for legit NWOBHM comps, the '1979 Revisited' 2xLP that Lars Ulrich put together is amazing, and I scored a sealed copy quite cheap on eBay not so long ago.  Great tunes (Diamond Head, Angel Witch, Sweet Savage, Venom etc), plenty of old pictures, press clippings etc, and all beautifully packaged in a gatefold with printed inner sleeves.

MX-80 Sound - Out of the Tunnel - new to these guys.  i really like it
Lamps - s/t LP  - 2nd day in a row i've had to put this on. i need more.

If you like Out of the Tunnel than you are in for more pleasure. That one is their weakest. Crowd Control is similar style as Tunnel but better. Hard Attack is even better still. For me they are best to listen to with a good whiskey buzz.

Crowd Control was in the same new arrival rack where I found Tunnel. Wish I got 'em both.   I doubt it will be there when I go back, but it's good to know there's more to seek out.  Great songs/lyrics and a really cool guitar sound.
