For all baseball historical appreciaters out there, I attended last night's Cubs/Astros game at Wrigley. Maddux v. Clemens. Both of 'em pitched pretty well, but not surprisingly, the Cubs bats were silent. But if there was one thing I was hoping for last night, it was that it would be a pitcher's dual, which it was.  Old guys showing they still got it.
Total win count between the two:  668.

First time in the NL since 1892 that two pitchers with 300+ wins pitched against each other.  Awesome!

Ok, Cubs. Time to start the fire sale!!!

I'm surprised I haven't heard anything on here about the A's dominance of late.

Thanks for the boatload of info, razor. I'll be sure to avoid the choads at all costs.  I was thinking about checking out Mont-Royal on Saturday and the Olympic Stadium, too, cuz I wasn't sure what's all gonna be open on Saturday for the Quebec National Holiday.  Anything cool go on with that?

uhh, i don't know much about baseball but this thread has been hanging out at the top for months so i thought i'd mention that I am going to my first baseball game (Brewers vs  I don't know who) on July 3 in Milwaukee. any tips regarding sneaking in booze, etc?

Yes, since my job is to stop it coming in...use a bladder and put in your purse or whatever underneath something that can pass as the bottom.  Don't bother with anything hard (bottles, flasks, canteens) because you won't get it by.  Best bet is to have feminine products on top so as to embarass the dude that has to rifle through your purse.

Places we catch it every time: small of the back, around the ankle, behind the belt buckle, in an unsealed water bottle.

Every stadium is different, but I have never been padded down going to a baseball game.  If you bring a bag, they'll check through it with a hard wand, but not super carefully, but enough to clunk into a bottle or can if it's in there.  My best advice is to bring a fifth or 2 and either bring in a fountain pop (if they'll let you, but don't mix it before you go in) or buy one at the game as a mixer. My brother-in-law has brought in 1.75's of vodka into Miller Park and not had problems (well, at least no problems with sneaking it in).  You should be ok with the booze inside an inner jacket pocket or crotched, if no other fairly concealable option is available.  As long as you're not too drunk upon entry and don't draw too much attention to yourself, you should be fine.

Also, tailgating at Miller is a great time!!

What happens if Bonds wants to play again next year with the Giants?  Do they just say thanks, but no thanks?  Do you think any team, outside of say, the Royals, would sign him up??

Latest Crew talk from the owner is that if they don't have Carlos Lee resigned and if they are out of it by the time the trading deadline approaches, then Lee will prolly be traded.

Is Dick Harden the new Kerry Wood?

Grimsley blowing the lid off of Human Growth Hormone use in baseball, and apparently naming LOTS of names to the Feds to save his own ass.

Found this in an espn.com article about the teams he's played for. If names will be named, it could be get crazy!

He played with the Phillies of the early 1990s, with a bunch of players who went on to become a major part of the worst-to-first saga of their 1993 World Series runner-up team.
He played with the Indians of the mid-'90s, on a team of mashers that eventually grew into the only club in the past 70 years to score 1,000 runs in a season.
He played with the Yankees of 1999 and 2000, teams that won back-to-back World Series.
And he played with the Orioles of 2004-05, with guys named Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy Sosa.
Not to mention the '96 Angels or the 2006 Diamondbacks, or the three teams (Astros, Tigers and Brewers) that dumped him without bringing him back to the big leagues.

To ask a previously asked question, if the A's don't resign Kendall, which they have no reason to, who do they have:::::::::Jeremy Brown?  what's the deal with Daric Barton????

I agree with the Zito staying analysis, it makes sense.  Also, I don't think he could get many acoustic gigs in NYC without it being a huge fuckin' scene.

Heard an interesting conspiracy theory yesterday.  The reason that Clemens is gonna play now is that he was actually suspended for steroids, had to miss the first 50 games of the season, and MLB didn't want to tarnish the rep of one of the greatest pitchers of all time by making it public.  For what it's worth, it's interesting, at the least.

Thank goodness Bay's turning it on.  He's hopefully gonna turn my fantasy team around.

Bay Areans, what's the deal with Daric Barton?  Why did they make him into a catcher with Dan Johnson in line to play first and old man Kendall behind the dish? Was he a shitty catcher or do they have someone else the like in Sacto better?

Their pitching has been great and is getting better.  Verlander has been dominant his last 2 starts, including dueling with Santana through 8.  Also, they're getting clutch hitting off the bench and late in the game (Vance Wilson's 8th inning HR vs. Santana and last night's comeback following the Gambler's weaker performance.)
Detroit seems to have that little something extra this year that nudges a team past mediocrity and into the playoffs.
Only problem is that the White Sox are in their division, which means they'll have to be this good all year to win the division (or get the wildcard.)

ZUMAYA!

Bean balls are indeed stupid.  But I have no problem with pitchers hitting a guy instead of throwing him 4 balls.  Same outcome, but the HBP comes with a free message.

Giants fans---what's your take on Dusty?  A lot of talk going on right now in Chicago about his potential dismissal.  It seems like he's got no fire, no tenacity.  Did he ever?
The lack of fundamentals by the players reeks of a laissez faire coaching approach.

I've had Feliz on fantasy teams each of the past 3 years, mostly because he usually has lots of position eligibility.  He has some great streaks where he just kills the ball, but the rest of the time, he hits about .180.  I listened to the broadcast yesterday and they seemed to expect him to swing at the first one.
Finally saw the replay of Fielder taking out Greene. Ouch from the big boy!

Don't forget that Shelton looks like Sloth from the Goonies.

A's putting a beatin' on the Tribe.  Is Saarloos the answer?

Doubt it!

Two things that would make baseball better:
1.  Getting rid of the DH
2.  Banning above the waste body armor
