I remember the chicago ARA "fag"tion getting sand in their panties over some store selling Skrewdriver records (I forgot which one but it wasn't Reckless,Dummyroom, nor the Record Swaps..I think this was 97).
Those commercials are too glitzy and it looks as though everyone has well-paying day jobs and just let their hair down at night. A distinct lack of loading docks, hand trucks and freight elevators. Also pro attitude should only be displayed when it comes to partying... not working.
You fucking guys love to pretend that the City Rocker is some Working Class Hero. Fuck that. He's just a guy. Sometimes he is broke, sometimes he is loaded.
We've built up the "loser" ambiance to the max, but the City Rocker is no eternal gormless pessimist. He wants to make it happen. He wants that top shelf champagne, because that's how America rewards winners: champagne-drenched vag.
What really pisses me off are all the commercials you see on TV now for "vocational training" schools. Their tuition rates are higher than those at any local community college or even many state universities. They're just praying on people who've been laid off of otherwise fucked over by this economy. Most of the people naive or desperate enough to go to these places end up with about $20,000 or more in student loans they'll never be able to repay with a "degree" in massage therapy or whatever. I believe there's actually some negotiation about it in Washington right now about no longer allowing dispersion of federal student loans to these places.
Doesn't really affect me, but I do watch a lot of TV. I probably see at least 10 of these ads a day. Bums me out.
(Algren being the Cityest of writers).
also, whoever said they liked i stand alone better than irreversible, i tend to agree for the most part, though it is probably a very short line between which one i prefer to the other. he makes very draining films. CARNE (short that tells the story up to the point where i stand alone starts) is great as well.
i also went to see irreversible in the theater, and yes it was so much more intense seeing it on a screen and not just a tv.

I love the part where she tries to use the word persnickety and mispronounces it.
