I remember the chicago ARA "fag"tion getting sand in their panties over some store selling Skrewdriver records (I forgot which one but it wasn't Reckless,Dummyroom, nor the Record Swaps..I think this was 97).

Pretty sure that was Record Breakers, which has relocated to the city.  Their response to the complaints was pointing out this blatantly anti-white reggae or African record that they had in stock, and stating "we sell everything, regardless of the message".

I think this skateboarding video was the first time I actually heard one of their songs:

Those commercials are too glitzy and it looks as though everyone has well-paying day jobs and just let their hair down at night. A distinct lack of loading docks, hand trucks and freight elevators. Also pro attitude should only be displayed when it comes to partying... not working.

I don't doubt that loading docks and hand trucks were part of the daily routine for many City Rockers.  However, it's already been established that the City Rocker is not exclusively blue collar:

You fucking guys love to pretend that the City Rocker is some Working Class Hero. Fuck that. He's just a guy. Sometimes he is broke, sometimes he is loaded.

We've built up the "loser" ambiance to the max, but the City Rocker is no eternal gormless pessimist. He wants to make it happen. He wants that top shelf champagne, because that's how America rewards winners: champagne-drenched vag.

If a commercial tries to go too far in the blue collar direction, you end up with this:

Miller - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BuDAu7Gzro

It's got a few City moments, but spends a little too much time in the country and suburbs.

Seems there were many brands that made TV commercials which contained some heavy City imagery or themes:

Coors Light - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvdVxz2xOos

Haven't seen any that really nailed it like Michelob though:

What really pisses me off are all the commercials you see on TV now for "vocational training" schools. Their tuition rates are higher than those at any local community college or even many state universities. They're just praying on people who've been laid off of otherwise fucked over by this economy. Most of the people naive or desperate enough to go to these places end up with about $20,000 or more in student loans they'll never be able to repay with a "degree" in massage therapy or whatever. I believe there's actually some negotiation about it in Washington right now about no longer allowing dispersion of federal student loans to these places.

Doesn't really affect me, but I do watch a lot of TV. I probably see at least 10 of these ads a day. Bums me out.

This is on that subject, and very interesting:  http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/collegeinc/

(Algren being the Cityest of writers).

Never Come Morning by Algren is very City.  Certainly belongs on the City reading list.

I can imagine the primary lyricist of a City Rock band having some inclinations that drive him toward Algren.  However, I can also picture the rhythm guitar player having only enough time for some of the filthier late 60's/early 70's Mickey Spillane material, which he keeps in his back pocket for the subway commute.  The entire band doesn't consist of Algren readers, but not all of them are strictly dedicated to the sports page (though none are opposed).  They may all walk down the same blvds, but everyone's still on their own path in The City.

I wasn't going to bother with this show when it looked like tickets were going to be $40+ after service fees.  Then I noticed that they were being re-sold for $9 - $12 on here:

also, whoever said they liked i stand alone better than irreversible, i tend to agree for the most part, though it is probably a very short line between which one i prefer to the other. he makes very draining films.  CARNE (short that tells the story up to the point where i stand alone starts) is great as well.

I went into I Stand Alone knowing very little about what would happen.  With Irreversible, I read about far too many of the details before seeing it, and it really reduced the impact it should have had.  I'll have to check out Carne, and avoid reading up on Enter The Void before seeing it.

i also went to see irreversible in the theater, and yes it was so much more intense seeing it on a screen and not just a tv.

When I saw it, they had a disclaimer up specifically for Irreversible that said if you leave after a certain point in the movie then you cannot get a refund.

I think I liked I Stand Alone more.  Have you seen that one?  http://www.allmovie.com/work/i-stand-alone-162718
