The Dead Space - 'Faker' LP (12XU 063-1)   (shipping on or before June 24)

https://soundcloud.com/gerardcosloy/the-dead-space-behind-the-wall

Who amongst us hasn?t pondered how good Joy Division might?ve been had they been recorded by Spot (NOT SPOT LONG OF TRAILER SPACE, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?) instead of Martin Hannett? Don?t all raise your hands at once.

OK, maybe I?m the only one that?s woken up in the middle of the night grappling with that particular ?what if?? But I?ll bet I?m not not nearly the only person that?s about to be poleaxed by The Dead Space?s long-awaited debut album, ?Faker?. The trio of bassist/vocalist Quin Galavis, guitarist Garrett Hadden and drummer Jenny Arthur have been honing their craft in Austin, TX since high school, but after a 7? on Hadden?s excellent Thread Pull label (Flesh Lights, Foreign Mothers), a song on the second ?Casual Victim Pile? comp. (12XU, 2012) the moment is long overdue for The Dead Space to put-it-all-together. And that?s exactly what they?ve done ; this is a band whose blend of tension, fragility and genuine muscle ?certainly in the spirit of avowed influences like Joy Division, Bauhaus and Swans without being remotely copyist ??has never sounded this fully realized.

We?re a couple of years past The Dead Space making the good-to-great leap ; at present, they?re in the middle of that awkward period I like to call the ?How Have You Assholes Slept On This Amazing Band?? Stage. And while the recent notoriety of their other projects might elevate The Dead Space?s profile a tad (ie. Galavis? quieter solo works or the heavier jams laid down with Nazi Gold, Hadden?s recent participation in Ghetto Ghouls), ?Faker?? Is The Real Deal. Like Evander Holyfield. Don?t be a fucking Charley Steiner.

GHETTO GHOULS - "Plastic Violence" b/w "Things" 7" (12XU 061-7)   (shipping on or before June 24)

https://soundcloud.com/gerardcosloy/ghetto-ghouls-plastic-violence

Would it be fair to say Austin?s These Are Words decided to lay down a gauntlet of one sort or another when they changed their name to the decidedly more malevolent GHETTO GHOULS ?- culled from the old lady-stomping street gang in ?The Exterminator? (1980, dir - James Glickenhaus). It could also be a colossal reach or perhaps even wishful thinking.

Fresh off a widely acclaimed debut LP for Austin?s Monofonus Press, Ghetto Ghouls have been likened to such Texan predecessors as Bobby Soxx or The Dicks, but there?s echoes of Cleveland's  X_X or ?Live At The Witch Trails?-era Fall in their staggery swagger (especially if you play an old Fall record at the bottom of a well while listening to Ghetto Ghouls up above). In a town where the best gigs often straddle the line between parties and disasters, a ridiculously high percentage of those shows seem to occur with this quartet right in the middle of the action.

This 7? couples a pair of songs from the S/T LP sessions that either represent 12XU getting the cream of the crop or the goddamn leftovers. The latter scenario is just way too depressing to contemplate.

OBNOX - 'Louder Space' LP (12XU 060-1), ships on or before 3/25/14

"It?s never happened before and it may never happen again?Obnox have recorded in a real studio. After an LP, a 2xLP, and over a half dozen 7?s recorded in a dumpy punk flophouse's living room on a let?s just say ?experienced? half-inch tape deck, Cleveland OH?s biggest brotha Bim Thomas has tracked his new full-length at Columbus, OH?s Musicol Studio. Is 'Louder Space? Obnox?s 'Tallahassee?' Oh God, no.

"

"That glorious rust belt/disgust belt grit and grime that makes the ?Nox the ?Nox is ALL there, good people. Call it Soul Noise, call it Splatter Gospel, hell, call it Urban Contemporary, who cares that it?s taken. From the lumpen stomp of 'Primetime Sista' to the boldly experimental anti-funk of 'How to Rob ?The Punk Years??and ?Red-I,? to the COMPLETELY SICK, fuzzed-out, industrial psych-blues of the jaw-dropping closer Feeling Real Black Today,' Thomas? punk spirituals satisfy the soul on ?Louder Space? more than ever before. Obnox?s soul/punk fusion just keeps getting dirtier, more organic, and if this white boy may dare to say so, blacker with every go-?round. You gotta get in on this shit, people. If you?re not on this train yet, it?s time." - Ron Kretch, Dangerous Minds

OBNOX - "Used Kids, Pt. 1" b/w "Used Kids Pt. II"  (12XU 059-7), ships on or before 3/18/14

Bim's new 'Louder Space' masterpiece was only narrowly spared double LP status, hence the hasty/confusing 33 RPM, flip-the-sides and interrupt the grind of "Used Kids", a new classic in the Obnox canon (though "cannon" works just as well in this instance). Big thanks in advance to Columbus, OH's Used Kids Records (1980 N. High Street) for NOT SUING US.

If you think Mr. Thomas' prolific nature is tough on your shelf space, spare a thought for all the inferior artists who he's humiliating on what seems like a monthly basis!

Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / SXSW 2014
« on: January 12, 2014, 05:02:32 PM »

There's not much sense in a nearly dormant, sponsor-free sports blog cramming 8 world class bands into what would be a tight fit for 5, but just be thankful we're not setting up a third stage on the roof. This is CSTBs 6th annual, not-affiliated-with-SXSW day show at Beerland, and if it isn't the best bill to date, at least it's the most crowded. Past participants have included Endless Boogie, The Muffs, Puffy Areolas, the Homosexuals, Buck Biloxi & The Fucks, Wiccans, Golden Pelicans, Wounded Lion, Dikes Of Holland, TV Ghost, The Blind Shake, Spray Paint, etc., few of whom can claim the event ruined or ended their careers. '14's all-star lineup includes the following :

Rusted Shut (Houston)
Tyvek (Detroit)
Protomartyr (Detroit)
Obnox (Cleveland)
Unholy Two (Columbus)
The Secret Prostitutes (Houston)
The Gotobeds (Pittsburgh)
Empty Markets (Austin)

Running order & set times TBA though Empty Markets will be on the patio sometime in mid-afternoon.   Beerland will also have someone playing the patio between the Thursday afternoon and evening shows.

SEWER BIRTH is the first album by BURNT SKULL - Dustin Pilkington (programming, vocals, guitar) and Anthony Davis (programming, drums). The Austin-based duo have toiled in a number of groups together and individually*, though Burnt Skull began playing in the Autumn of 2011

SEWER BIRTH blasts through 10 tracks of ferocious, untuned obliteration with subject matter including sacrificing your mutant child to the underworld ("Sewer Birth"), painting the wall with the back of your head ("No Cross"), and becoming one with a sickening, ever-growing mass of human pulp ("Infinite Flesh"). Universal themes we can all relate to.

* - Pilkington has previously been heard as a member of Cruddy, Total Abuse and The Sneezes. Davis, most recently with Gremlins UK. Together, Pilkington & Davis have recorded/entertained as Best Fwends.

SWEET TALK - Flash Of Light 12" EP (12XU 057-1)

In the wake of last January's full-length debut, 'Pickup Lines',  the firm of Svacina/Fraizer/Assi and Jones, aka Austin's SWEET TALK are back with 6 new songs, recorded in Denton, TX with The Marked Men's Mark Ryan and Jeff Burke at the recording controls.   'Pickup LInes' earned praise including but not limited to MRR declaring, "fuck, this is good", Tiny Grooves proclaiming the album, "catchy as fuck", while Razorcake opted for the more reserved, "this record is fucking great". If you're sensing a pattern here, so am I. No one can talk about music anymore without employing gratuitous profanity.

Featuring guys who are in/out of such bands as Uptown Bums, Church Shoes, Wiccans, Mind Spiders, OBN III's, Brain Attack, Jonly Bonly, Video and probably a few more by the time you're done reading this

JOEL RL PHELPS + THE DOWNER TRIO - Gala LP (12XU 055-1)

'Gala' is the first new album from Joel RL Phelps & The Downer Trio since 2004's 'Customs', a record praised by Pitchfork's Stephen M. Deunser for it's "darkly existential drama and gravity".  Would it have killed him to have said "fucking dark, dramatic and grave"?  Pass the lucky gravy --- former Silworm guitarist/vocalist Phelps has emerged from (musical) exile with wits, chops, voice, etc. intact.  One of his best records, and a great companion piece if you're buying the new Bottomless Pit album (though it should  be stressed these records don't actually get lonely ).

(first 200 on clear vinyl, includes download code).    Canadians can order Triple Crown Audio's pressing (http://crowncrowncrown.com), those in the UK who'd prefer a CD can get one from Damnably (http://www.damnably.com/portfolio/joel-r-l-phelps-the-downer-trio-gala/)

SHIPS ON OR BEFORE JUNE 18 * :

OBNOX - 'Corrupt Free Enterprise' 2XLP (12XU 052-1)  $20.00

"Bim Thomas is a lucky bastard. Upon settling in Columbus-by-God-Ohio in the early ?90s, he found himself neck-deep in a killer music scene, and soon ended up as the Ringo for the legendary blues-punk power duo The Bassholes . Drifting northward to Cleveland as the sun rose on the 21st Century, Thomas landed in the drum throne for spastic post-punk upstarts This Moment in Black History, who even after ten years and a membership diaspora STILL rule the CLEpunk roost, while simultaneously keeping the pulse for other revered CLE outfits like The Deathers and Puffy Areolas.

But now, with midlife on the horizon, when most ragers at least start to slow down if not skid to a halt, Thomas is revealing previously unseen musical gifts that far transcend the metronome. With his band Obnox, of which he is the sole member (with heavy friends when he?s feeling like some company), Thomas has shown himself to be a songwriter of astonishing depth, injecting punk with the soul and balladry it too often lacks. Having become a stay-at-home dad, Thomas began messing around with a guitar, teaching himself how to play and write songs, and damn, he really TOOK to it. 2011 debut, ?I?m Bleeding Now?, was one of that year?s finest albums, and sold out so quickly a reissue was necessary only a year later. His new release, the double-LP ?Corrupt Free Enterprise? (12XU-052), is his 8th in only three years, and his strongest by miles. Featuring 17 scuzz-fi splatter gospel anthems ? 12 originals and 5 covers that run the gamut from nasty punk flameouts to ardent slow-burners, CFE spans four sides, each of which plays as an E.P. in its own right. Thomas has never shied away from bold statements, but CFE is his boldest and most ambitious yet."
- Ron Kretsch

(200 on blood red vinyl, the rest on black, gatefold sleeve, includes download code)

(?Deep In The Dusk (Redux)? previously appeared on the May 2013 double 7″, ?Canabible, Ohio EP?, available from Black Gladiator)

IN STORES ON OR BEFORE JUNE 18* :

THE GOSPEL TRUTH - 'A Lonely Man Does Foolish Things'  LP (12XU 054-1)   $13.00

Austin's The Gospel Truth have been knocking around since 2007, but it's only been in the past two years that vocalist/saxophonist/keyboard player Mark Tonucci's quartet have really caught fire. All-malicious-intent in a way that runs contrary to this city?s party vibe, they've emerged as one of the town?s top live bands in the process. Not only is it hard to come up with a regional precedent for The Gospel Truth, it?s almost as tough to ID an album as out of time as ?A Lonely Man Does Foolish Things?. The Flesh Eaters? ?A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die?, the Toiling Midgets? ?Sea Of Unrest? or maybe The Black Snakes' 'Crawl' come to mind, but that trio stuck out like sore cocks in their respective eras, too.

In this case, you've got a determined, unusually deft ensemble fronted by a singer who comes out of his shell in the best possible way. Featuring an all-star squad of Austin rockers (Patrick Travis of The Golden Boys, SsserpentssS, Jeremy Steen of the Flesh Lights and Nazi Gold, ex-When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth drummer Brandon Bennett Crowe) and touring the midwest this June.

(first 100 on gold vinyl, includes download code)

OBN III's - Live At WFMU (12XU 049-1)

(SHIPS ON OR BEFORE MAY 28, 2013)

During the OBN III's first visit to the East Coast last June, they stopped by Evan "Funk" Davies' WFMU program to perform selections from their 2 Tic Tac Totally studio albums. Though the entire set has been available as a free download via Free Music Archive for some time, the money-spinning potential of pressing this 11 song session onto vinyl was unrealized until now.  Is this crucial documentation of one of America's top live bands?  A historic moment in the history of listener-supported broadcasting? Or a record that's utterly unnecessary for anyone with a broadband connection?

Sweet Talk - 'Pickup Lines'  LP/CD (12XU 043-1,2)

Sweet Talk are an Austin based quartet fronted/founded by former Uptown Bums guitarist/vocalist Stephen Svacina, who a few of you might know from his additional guitar work alongside Mark Ryan in Denton, TX's Mind Spiders.  Flanked by Wiccans/Video/Brain Attack bassist Harpal Assi and southpaw guitar wiz/Ft. Wayne transplant Mitch Frazier (Church Shoes), Svacina's Sweet Talk were likened by an unpaid peer to something that "combined the best parts of Cheap Trick, early UK power pop and the dual guitar work of Thin Lizzy." Their Evan Kleinecke-recorded full length debut, 'Pickup Lines' is in stores Jan. 29.  Austin residents can catch an instore at End Of An Ear on Jan. 30, or a record release party at Beerland on Jan. 31 (w/ Flesh Lights, Nazi Gold and Burnt Skull).   Sweet Talk are touring in February.

Ratsak - "20th Century Bricolage" + 3 7"

Ratsak is Mark Groves, Harriet Hudson, Kirk Scotcher, Jared Styles. Recorded and mixed by Mikey Young, July 2012. This new Melbourne, AU quartet's members have logged time with such heavyweights as True Radical Miracle, Dead Boomers, Circle Pit, Southern Comfort, Downtown, Kromosom, Bloody Hammer and Flesh Word. Band name refers to a very popular antipodean brand of mice/rat poison and they had me at "very popular brand". The lovely folks at Permanent Records had this to say :  "Killer and aggressive 'post-hardcore' (what DOES that mean exactly?) with a whisper of the rock - reminds us of early Fucked Up or even the John Brannon led-outfits like Negative Approach or more accurately, Easy Action. Snarling dog vocals and aggressive Ginn-style riffage that grab the jugular and do not let go."

OBNOX - 'I'm Still Bleeding' LP (12XU 039-1)

Reissue of the 2011 solo debut from Lamont "Bim" Thomas, previously released by Smog Veil. The Chicago Reader's Luca Cimarusti calls 'I'm Still Bleeding', "incredibly soulful and criminally overlooked", but it's not like Bim's ever been on the cover of their weekly, nor is Luca performing a citizen's arrest on his editor.  Truly overlooked would be a record Cimarusti didn't review, no one ever purchased and no record label (let alone two of them) bothered to put out.
