a few things I neglected to post :

OBN III's - "Rich Old White Men" b/w "On The Verge Of Collapse" 7" (12XU 090-7)

2 new post-'Worth A Lot Of Money' crushers showcasing the increasingly nutso guitar histrionics of Messrs Neeley and Triplett, w/ accompanying socio-policital insight and pseudo apocalyptic themes (warning : that's a real stretch designed to see if blogs will just cut and paste whatever they're sent without listening to the record).  black vinyl, no download code,  500 pressed, $6

EMPTY MARKETS - 'Stainless Steel' LP (12XU 086-1)  $14.50

Milwaukee-to-Austin transplant Drew Schmitz has made his presence felt in bands ranging from Brain Attack, Gremlins UK, Party Garbage and most recently as the 4th wheel in the long-running paragon-of-excellence that is The Hex Dispensers. All of those  contributions aside, the one project of Drew?s that probably most relevant to this discussion is Cruddy, whose 2011 12XU LP ?Negative World? was pretty goddamn special, and Schmitz? bleaker-than-bleak worldview (to say nothing of inventive guitar work) was an awfully big part of that.

Fast forward a few years and Schmitz? newly formed Empty Markets aren?t entirely removed from the vision of Cruddy (you?ve got the same fella yelling and playing guitar, no arguing that) but are we allowed to use the dreaded word PROGRESSION without morphing into Alan Parsons? Make no mistake, on ?Stainless Steel?, engineer Ian Rundell (fresh off recent knob-jobs for Spray Paint, The Rebel and Xetas) has captured the tumult, the agitation, and perhaps most importantly, the precision of Empty Markets in glorious fashion. If Cruddy was a grim snapshot of a hopeless future, Empty Markets is a Hasalbald-quality, full-scale portrait of a hopeless present.

includes download code, first 125 on clear vinyl, initial orders include a limited print from Port Au Prints.

Civil Union - Seasick, Lovedrunk LP  (Melted Ice Cream)  $14.00

Christchurch, New Zealand trio Civil Union's last international tour was a miserable series of break-?ins, near?accidents and existential dread. And fittingly! This is the band that sings ?Love Makes Slaves Of Us All?, an example of what kind of hopefulness you can expect within a country that?s undergoing a neoliberal makeover. And this is also the band whose bassist narrowly escaped an earthquake that levelled his home city. The misery is strong in these ones, as is common in their generation of NZ bands who?ll never afford a house: a bleak streak recently nicely summarised as the ?Antipodean Gothic?. Whether you intellectualise it or not, it?s plain to see that the chirp in this country has all gone dried up. And that?s what an LP like ?Seasick, Lovedrunk? is there to say, it in its idiosyncratic, twangy, bummed ?out way. (Which also happens to be the way of The Male Nurse or the Country Teasers, if you wanna go there.) In it, a testament to the cracks in the landscape ?? and people ?? of New Zealand. If you?re put off visiting by now, at least there?s still this album.

(CZ pressing of 300, no d/l code)

also now in stock : wondrous third-party titles from Dan Melchior, Urochromes/Wizzard Sleeve, restocks on Obnox 'Wiglet' and 'Know America'

Not to mention Matador put out a Howland solo LP and several Bassholes LPs. What the fuck?

Matador released one Bassholes LP and no Don Howland solo recordings.

re : Androo's observation that Matador is/was too crossover-fixated to be consistent.  That I disagree shouldn't be of interest  ; if that's the worst thing anyone ever says about the label, we've lived a very charmed life.

?really want that howland lp too. 12xu seems to be the label a lot of people hoped matador was gonna be.
It would be enlightening if the owner posted what he thought in this forum.

I've nothing illuminating to add BUT WHEN HAS THAT STOPPED ME BEFORE?  Pleased to death Don's latest has been well received but there's still a chance Matador will turn out to be the label a lot of people hoped it would be.  Not anyone reading this, perhaps, but you know, other people.

I know the Bull Tongue Review was being talked about on the TB Update thread but I bit the bullet on international postage and a few pages in, I'm already feeling glad about spoiling myself...Lots of interesting shit to check out that doesn't seem to get mentioned here, or only in the new releases section (?) Rock out with your c(r)oc(k)snout ;  after a series of unbeatable records for Pelican Pow Wow, Goner, Tic Tac Totally and Ken Rock, could this hate spree be Abe White's crowning achievement?  Or is it merely a pit stop on the way to something considerably sicker?   Damned if I know, but we're running low on the croc colored versions.  Includes d/l card.   order from 12XU.bigcartel.com,  also available now or momentarily from Goner, Florida's Dying or Midheaven.

Don Howland - Life Is A Nightmare (12XU 078-1)

Over the past 3 decades, Don Howland?s been a crucial figure whichever crossroads where Depression-era country blues and '76 punk intersect (occasionally obeying the rules of the road but often resulting in a musical wrecks the likes of which few witnesses can unsee/unhear). We could spend the next several hours cataloging the highlights of Howland?s respective tenures in the Gibson Brothers, Ego Summit, Wooden Tit, Bassholes and Burning Bus, or we can instead live in the present and engulf ourselves in Don's first solo album in some 13 years.  ?Life Is A Nightmare? is not simply yet another raw, misanthropic record by a not-entirely-happy elder statesperson revered in collector scum circles (though it is also ALL OF THOSE THINGS).  Includes a download card.

Sweet Talk - Double Perfect LP (12XU 077-1)

2nd all-hits album from the Austin 4some with pedigree including but not limited to Mind Spiders, Uptown Bums, Church Shoes and Jonly Bonly.  Meatier by far than their 2013 debut, first 150 are on orange vinyl (w/ d/l card).  RIYL : imagining who'd get a song on a straight-to-VOD remake of "Over The Edge" and who'd be on the outside looking in.

Exhaustion - "Phased Out" 12" EP (12XU 082-1)

On subterranean flight from the antipodes, Exhaustion scrape together this carry-on wedge of pulsing malfunction. A single-note wrassles with manual techno via heady doses of tabletop manipulation. Long-gone are the Les Rallizes nods and in strolls a hijacked Mr Walker ? after a bad day at work ? delivering cavalier prayers to end the race. But why end there? It?s all dust and low voltage glitter now.

Exhaustion hail from Melbourne and this is their 3rd non-collaborative record (4th if you don't harbor any weird, irrational resentments against saxophonists). The trio of Duncan Blachford, Per Bystrom and Richard Stanley -- joined on this venture by Mark Barrage --- have logged time in ensembles including but not limited to Snawklor, Ooga Boogas, Witch Hats and Onyas. And now, YOU'VE BEEN BRIEFED

next up  : Manateees - 'Croc N My Pocket',  Dark Blue - "Vicious Romance" b/w "Delco" 7:

Snooty Garbagemen  - s/t LP (12XU 075-1)

You might be familiar with guitarist Tom Triplett from such groups including but not limited to The Real Energy, No Talk, Hammatsu Tom & the Kroger Sushi River Band and the Homopolice.  In more recent times, perhaps you've stood, jaw agape, stunned by Tom's performances and recordings with OBN III's or BLAXXX. Now, in the rich tradition of Ron Wood's 'Now I've Got My Own Album To Do' (albeit having zero in common musically), Tom brings us SNOOTY GARBAGEMEN, ably accompanied by Josh Wolff (of Secret Prostitutes, Crime Wave, Lysol S.S.) infamy

(initial quantities on translucent green vinyl still remain)

Shawn David McMillen - 'On The Clock With JJ & Mitch' LP (12XU 070-1)

"I took to the sound of this record immediately - grubby psych blues zilch that calls to mind the off-speed amphetamine melt of the first Mad River long player, or Sugar Creek?s Please Tell A Friend engulfing my skips while crouched outside an Episcopal church basement window. Both those bands messed with space but good, but fuck it?that was a hundred years ago.  On The Clock With Mitch & JJ ain?t no throwback homage to anything but personalized jungle rot from a trio of lone star greaser whizballs who know the taste. Everything about this record, from the collaged clock cover to the dogs barking on ?Two Sparrows? at album?s end speaks to time out of mind and the intimacy of players not rushing to get anywhere fast, together."

"If you asked me in 1996 what would float, in all likelihood I would?ve pulled out a round piece of aluminum from Ash Castles On The Ghost Coast, Shawn David McMillen?s collab with Volcanic Tongue bon vivantress Heather Leigh Murray, which played in my head all throughout that year and into the next. He?s unfurled much in the way of robust primitive thunderclap ever since, but what a thrill all the same to trip over his vision quest yet again, as if he?s an old friend you hadn?t seen ? or heard ? in years." - Fuckin' Record Reviews

OBNOX - Boogalou Reed (12XU 071-1)

Riddle me this: who on Earth makes 15 top notch records in 5 years and stays as obscure as Obnox monarch Bim Thomas? Not that there's been no love at all?now that the man seemingly spent as much of 2014 on tour as off, and dropped blazetastic videos for "Red I" and "Molecule/How to Rob," the spotlight is widening, and not just from the usual indie/undie blogs?the Washington-by-god-POST has seen fit to recognize the 'Nox's bulletproof alloy of Cleveland-by-god-Ohio's two sturdiest musical ores: punk rock and soul.

And maybe that right there's why fame, Grammys and fat cash haven't come a-knockin'?'Noxmusik is some potent, real, RAW shit, and the new drop, Boogalou Reed, isn't going to win over any Future Islands fans to the cause. And that is what it is, but Thomas' songwriting chops keep getting better and better. Boogalou Reed is home to soul satisfying gospel-psych like "I Climbed a Mountain," skillet-to-the-face noise freakouts like "Proto-Pipe," taut rockers like "Raven Slaughter Culture" and "All Hail the Deejay." 'Nox's tunes just keep turning out SO DAMN GOOD, and if more people can't hear that through the fuzzgrind, that's really just too bad for them. But there's no way rock 'n' roll this persuasive stays a secret forever.
