Harlem "Free Drugs" LP - I have a soft spot for this one. What did these guys end up doing after?

I believe the main guy behind Harlem is now doing a solo thing as Lace Curtains (not to be confused with the Total Control side project Lace Curtain): http://lacecurtainsband.tumblr.com/

A little more mellow but just as catchy.

Coomers has a 2nd album ready to roll ; not sure if he's calling this one Lace Curtains or not.

Curtis sings and plays guitar for Grape St..  They've one album to date released by the Jackie Harvey of independent rock, aka Austin Town Hall.

former bassist Jose now plays guitar and sings for the Brooklyn trio Las Rosas

OBNOX - 'Louder Space' LP (12XU 060-1), ships on or before 3/25/14

"It?s never happened before and it may never happen again?Obnox have recorded in a real studio. After an LP, a 2xLP, and over a half dozen 7?s recorded in a dumpy punk flophouse's living room on a let?s just say ?experienced? half-inch tape deck, Cleveland OH?s biggest brotha Bim Thomas has tracked his new full-length at Columbus, OH?s Musicol Studio. Is 'Louder Space? Obnox?s 'Tallahassee?' Oh God, no.

"

"That glorious rust belt/disgust belt grit and grime that makes the ?Nox the ?Nox is ALL there, good people. Call it Soul Noise, call it Splatter Gospel, hell, call it Urban Contemporary, who cares that it?s taken. From the lumpen stomp of 'Primetime Sista' to the boldly experimental anti-funk of 'How to Rob ?The Punk Years??and ?Red-I,? to the COMPLETELY SICK, fuzzed-out, industrial psych-blues of the jaw-dropping closer Feeling Real Black Today,' Thomas? punk spirituals satisfy the soul on ?Louder Space? more than ever before. Obnox?s soul/punk fusion just keeps getting dirtier, more organic, and if this white boy may dare to say so, blacker with every go-?round. You gotta get in on this shit, people. If you?re not on this train yet, it?s time." - Ron Kretch, Dangerous Minds

OBNOX - "Used Kids, Pt. 1" b/w "Used Kids Pt. II"  (12XU 059-7), ships on or before 3/18/14

Bim's new 'Louder Space' masterpiece was only narrowly spared double LP status, hence the hasty/confusing 33 RPM, flip-the-sides and interrupt the grind of "Used Kids", a new classic in the Obnox canon (though "cannon" works just as well in this instance). Big thanks in advance to Columbus, OH's Used Kids Records (1980 N. High Street) for NOT SUING US.

If you think Mr. Thomas' prolific nature is tough on your shelf space, spare a thought for all the inferior artists who he's humiliating on what seems like a monthly basis!

Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / SXSW 2014
« on: January 12, 2014, 05:02:32 PM »

There's not much sense in a nearly dormant, sponsor-free sports blog cramming 8 world class bands into what would be a tight fit for 5, but just be thankful we're not setting up a third stage on the roof. This is CSTBs 6th annual, not-affiliated-with-SXSW day show at Beerland, and if it isn't the best bill to date, at least it's the most crowded. Past participants have included Endless Boogie, The Muffs, Puffy Areolas, the Homosexuals, Buck Biloxi & The Fucks, Wiccans, Golden Pelicans, Wounded Lion, Dikes Of Holland, TV Ghost, The Blind Shake, Spray Paint, etc., few of whom can claim the event ruined or ended their careers. '14's all-star lineup includes the following :

Rusted Shut (Houston)
Tyvek (Detroit)
Protomartyr (Detroit)
Obnox (Cleveland)
Unholy Two (Columbus)
The Secret Prostitutes (Houston)
The Gotobeds (Pittsburgh)
Empty Markets (Austin)

Running order & set times TBA though Empty Markets will be on the patio sometime in mid-afternoon.   Beerland will also have someone playing the patio between the Thursday afternoon and evening shows.

SEWER BIRTH is the first album by BURNT SKULL - Dustin Pilkington (programming, vocals, guitar) and Anthony Davis (programming, drums). The Austin-based duo have toiled in a number of groups together and individually*, though Burnt Skull began playing in the Autumn of 2011

SEWER BIRTH blasts through 10 tracks of ferocious, untuned obliteration with subject matter including sacrificing your mutant child to the underworld ("Sewer Birth"), painting the wall with the back of your head ("No Cross"), and becoming one with a sickening, ever-growing mass of human pulp ("Infinite Flesh"). Universal themes we can all relate to.

* - Pilkington has previously been heard as a member of Cruddy, Total Abuse and The Sneezes. Davis, most recently with Gremlins UK. Together, Pilkington & Davis have recorded/entertained as Best Fwends.

First 100 copies on red ; only the blackest of black after that.

there was a band called Maximum RnR?

There is and they have a t-shirt design that says "Drink, Fight, and Fuck." Some dude with dreads came into my old work wearing the shirt and I asked him about it, and he told me that Maximum Rock 'n' Roll was a band. I can't remember now what he said about the DFF slogan, but he didn't know who GG was and had not heard of the magazine.

can't believe they don't have any cassettes

Is there still a James Arthur LP in the works?

Hopefully someday. James is taking a break from music world.  Suffice to say nothing's on the schedule for a while.

both of the titles below are in stock and currently shipping to mail order folks.  Distributors and stores are getting their shipments this week as well.

SWEET TALK - Flash Of Light 12" EP (12XU 057-1)

In the wake of last January's full-length debut, 'Pickup Lines',  the firm of Svacina/Fraizer/Assi and Jones, aka Austin's SWEET TALK are back with 6 new songs, recorded in Denton, TX with The Marked Men's Mark Ryan and Jeff Burke at the recording controls.   'Pickup LInes' earned praise including but not limited to MRR declaring, "fuck, this is good", Tiny Grooves proclaiming the album, "catchy as fuck", while Razorcake opted for the more reserved, "this record is fucking great". If you're sensing a pattern here, so am I. No one can talk about music anymore without employing gratuitous profanity.

Featuring guys who are in/out of such bands as Uptown Bums, Church Shoes, Wiccans, Mind Spiders, OBN III's, Brain Attack, Jonly Bonly, Video and probably a few more by the time you're done reading this

(first 150 on blue vinyl, includes download card)

JOEL RL PHELPS + THE DOWNER TRIO - Gala LP (12XU 055-1)

'Gala' is the first new album from Joel RL Phelps & The Downer Trio since 2004's 'Customs', a record praised by Pitchfork's Stephen M. Deunser for it's "darkly existential drama and gravity".  Would it have killed him to have said "fucking dark, dramatic and grave"?  Pass the lucky gravy --- former Silworm guitarist/vocalist Phelps has emerged from (musical) exile with wits, chops, voice, etc. intact.  One of his best records, and a great companion piece if you're buying the new Bottomless Pit album (though it should  be stressed these records don't actually get lonely ).

(first 200 on clear vinyl, includes download code).    Canadians can order Triple Crown Audio's pressing (http://crowncrowncrown.com), those in the UK who'd prefer a CD can get one from Damnably (http://www.damnably.com/portfolio/joel-r-l-phelps-the-downer-trio-gala/)

AND ANOTHER THING.  It's not my fault you're ugly.  I'm a photographer, not a fucking magician.  Seeing some of you people IRL (in real life) has been truly scarring.  GET FUKT.  ALL OF YOU.

I seem to recall almost everyone I've ever known who worked for CMJ being as good looking as they were highly intelligent.

But Jackie makes a good point --- perhaps we'd be better off if the front rows were populated by (fucking) magicians.  They could make the ugly people more attractive, turn smart phones into rabbits, etc.

not all labels have the upfront money required to press records.  some production delays are a direct result of that.

I don't get why you'd press records if you don't have the money to do so at the get-go. I know lots of labels do it but it just seems a bit dodgy to hope you get enough pre-orders to foot the cost of putting out the release.

Many of the records experiencing production delays were actually paid for in full, up front (though I can't speak for what was up with this Brainbombs double). I'm sure there's been instances of labels being put on hold until their arrears were paid off, but at the moment there's certainly plants in the U.S. who are totally slammed.  WIthout even factoring in stuff like Xmas or Record Store Day, count delays in many instances.  And if your plant isn't currently one experiencing this, just wait 'til they get new business from everyone that's lost patience with their prior manufacturer.

I don't know about their connections to the TP riot but all I remember is them being famous for stenciling everywhere and knocking over at a PA at CBGB or some place...This was late '80s LES Manhattan, not the the yuppified 20-noughts, where everyone was competing in the FSU olympics...

they pulled down the stage right overhead PA and some unlucky person suffered minor men's whiplash.  Club mgmt was not amused.

saw MF somewhere between one and four times, which might indicate that occasions three and four weren't as memorable (ie. they'd pulled down a P.A. column the first time - Alan Rickman told them to never, ever return).

I spent most of the Tompkins Sq. Park riot watching the Mets beat the Pirates on SportsChannel (HoJo hit a 2-run HR off Doug Drabek) and only ventured out of my apt. by the time most of the heavy shit had long since ended.

The subsequent WCBS TV report that blamed/credited Peter Missing for kicking it all off seemed like a slight exaggeration (some of the folks who got clobbered were neither cronies of nor conversant with Missing Foundation).

MF's ties, however loose, to the formation / exploitation of Old Skull will probably not result in a reissue campaign for the latter. But I wouldn't bet money on it.

excellent-- i don't even smoke and all the Obox sides to date have fucking killed. really a shockingly pleasant surprise what Bim has come up, including the hip-hop parts... GC, any chance 12XU will reissue "Rojo" or should I direct pals to grab the last few Permanent copies floating around? Glad you repressed the Smog Veil btw.

There's been no talk of a 12XU repress of  'Rojo' ; that's for Bim and Permanent to tackle.  Great record, though.

BTW - I'm gonna edit the original post ; the black vinyl copies of 'Corrupt Free Enterprise' turned up today but the red vinyl is gonna be delayed another 8-10 days.  I'll be emailing everyone who's ordered but if for some reason anyone would prefer a black vinyl version now as opposed to a red vinyl version closer to the 18th, let me know.
