Music Shit / Fontana LP tracks streaming + R.I.P. Fontana
« on: March 09, 2011, 06:01:49 AM »
Just posted 5 out of 10 songs from Fontana's self-titled LP from 2009. Streaming for free here:

http://soundcloud.com/xrecords/sets/fontana

This is one of those records that had everything working against it. It didn't end up coming out in time for what ended up being Fontana's final tour, the band wasn't very active after it came out and eventually called it quits, reviews (though good) came late, and word of mouth just didn't seem to spark like it sometimes does.

All that aside, I think it's worth your time to check out the posted songs. I saw nearly every show these guys played from when they (we) were in high school up until they decided to throw in the towel. Even in their stoned out high school days of Stooges/MC5/60s garage punk worship, they always had a certain flair of sincerity and authentic drive (not to mention their weird obsessions, stupid jokes, WWII trivia, and a healthy dose of numb disgust) that would lead them down their own angular and (dare I say) original path.

Listening through their discography in order, you can hear their progression from somewhat traditional "rock" stylings to more complex and aggressive punk and hardcore tunes that don't neglect the opportunity to shred whenever possible. Dude can play the shit out of a guitar. If you've seen Fontana, you know that. Definitely more in the lineage of Ginn/Mould than Richards/Page. They could pack tons of manic parts into a song too, somehow without being annoyingly self-indulgent. Their lyrics could range from weirdly personal to awesomely stupid and wherever else in between. Usually within the same set. Name me another band who has a song exclusively about BIID ("Not A Leg to Stand On")!?

Fontana was into "playin' live." If you were lucky enough to catch them on one of their tours you know that they gave it their all and weren't just anemic shoe gazers or fad-jumping rock snobs concerned with being perceived as "hip." High energy weirdo rock-n-roll was what they excelled at. Sometimes it would spiral out of control, and if it did you were right there with 'em, anticipating their next move and cheering 'em on. Wish they could have kept going and got out to tour on their LP, but that's just how things go sometimes. Hopefully this helps their music reach a few more starved and sympathetic ears.

As always, you can pick this up at x-recs.com. Stores and distros, feel free to contact about wholesale (info [at] x-recs.com).

OR if you just want a copy now, then send money to info [at] x-recs.com via paypal. LP=$12, CD=$10. This price INCLUDES shipping in the USA.

RIP Fontana, YOU'RE MISSED!

Paul Derochie - Guitar/Vocals
Geoff Iverson - Bass/Vocals
Colin Simon - Drums/Vocals (Colin currently plays guitar in Frustrations and drums in Timmy's Organism. He also plays drums in Human Eye when Billy can't.)

Just got this email. Dude made the great documentary "My Name is Albert Ayler." Got to briefly hang out with him, and he's a real good guy. He's looking for an apartment and childcare in New York for about 5 months. It's all in the message. Help out if ya can. Here's the message:

Dear all,

I'm going to spend four and a half month in New York together with my
partner and our five year old daughter from September to mid January.
My partner will be visiting scholar at Columbia University and I will
work on some new projects. We are looking for an apartment, at least
one bedroom, preferrably in Brooklyn. If you have an apartment to let
or know anyone who has please get in contact with me.

We are also looking for child care in some form. We would be grateful
for any recommendations. The ideal would be to share a babysitter for
5-6 hours per day with another family, but we are also interested in
preschool, kindergarten or other creative solutions.

Look forward to hearing from you.
all the best
Kasper

FONTANA "Self-Titled" LP/CD

For real- check out this record if you haven't already. Dudes have been playing together since they were like 15. They're 22-ish now or something. They've done two 7 inches (first on X!, second on Milk 'n' Herpes), and this LP has been a long time coming. Total midwestern mayhem and weirdness going on here- these dudes can play though. Elements of Husker Du and Black Flag are kicking around, but that's really only part of the picture. Off-kilter multi-part song structures that still have hooks, throw in some shredding, lyrics that only dudes who were in a band that formed in high school and then still stayed together after high school could write (?). Recording from Mr. Jim Diamond packs a punch too. This ain't dime-a-dozen-rock-n-roll-posturing, folks. A solid record- especially if you're into things like giant centipedes, self-loathing, car dealerships, unrealistic goals, the Civil War, and having a fun time.

Song titles:

1. When She's Not Wearing Black
2. Mess
3. Entropy
4. I Always Feel Like I'm Forgetting Something
5. Giant Centipede

6. Get Bent
7. Gotta Split
8. Yer Generation
9. Bitch Bitch Bitch
10. Rumor of War
