VOLAR11--ALE MANIA--A, WHO SINGS THAT BEAT? LP

100 ON GOLD, 400 ON BLACK

After talking about this for close to two years, Ale Mania's debut LP, A, Who Sings That Beat? is finally done and off at the presses. After the demise of San Diego garage/punk/soul legends The Sess, guitarist/singer Jeremy Rojas went on to create Beaters, with the Sess's Andrew Montoya on drums and Aldo Bustos on keys, while Andrew starting writing and recording as Ale Mania, taking care of drums/bass/most vox, with Rojas on guitar and some vox. The Sess was my favorite band in San Diego while they were around, and as sad as I was about their demise, I couldn't be happier with the work that Andrew and Jeremy have been putting into both new projects. Beaters and Ale Mania started right as Volar was in its beginning stages, and they're largely responsible for why I wanted to start a label in the first place.  Here's hoping that my friends keep cranking out genius stuff.

VOLAR15--LENGUAS LARGAS--ESE CULITO ONE-SIDED 12"

100 LIMITED COLOR, 400 ON BLACK

Here's another long-in-the-works release that Isaac from LL and I have been talking about since the birth of the label.  March just saw them release their great self-titled LP on Recess Records/Tic Tac Totally, and Isaac sent me the five great tracks that make up this 12" around that time.  Taken from the Recess site, "Lenguas Largas are from Tucson, AZ. Featuring members of Swing Ding Amigos, the Blacks, Shark Pants, Treepeople, Digital Leather, Sexy so you know they aren?t messing around."

VOLAR16--TROPICAL POPSICLE--"BEACH WITH NO FOOTPRINTS" 7"

We're proud to release the debut 7" by Tropical Popsicle, featuring Tim Hines from Lights On/Stereotypes.  The A-side (which can be heard below in an its early form) shows Hines delving in cold wave territory, albeit in a more lush manner.  The B-side, "Always Alone in Shadows," harkens back to 60s psychedelic pop (Syd Barrett, et. al.) and the current gaze backwards (i.e. White Fence).

VOLAR17--DIGITAL LEATHER--INFINITE SUN MINI-LP

My head's still spinning a bit that I have the privilege of putting this out.  After seeing releases on Goner, Shattered, and Fat Possum, S. Foree of Digital Leather began working on his next LP, only to see his friend and manager, Jay Reatard, pass away suddenly.  His deal with Fat Possum expired, he fired his booking agent and publicist, and retreated to Berlin for some much needed time away.  Over time he began working again via a Kickstarter campaign that allowed him to purchase the gear he needed to record in various locales (i.e. various friends' bedrooms), and this mini-LP, Infinite Sun, shows Foree at his sharpest, tongue-somewhat-in-cheekily misanthropic and creating a batch of his best songs yet.  "I intended Infinite Sun to sound like music you could travel through space to," he told me, and it makes perfect sense.  The highlight of the record, "Sea of Hate," was, according to Foree, co-written by Jay Reatard post-mortem in a dream.  It's really a fantastic record, I can't wait for everyone to hear it.  Cover art by Brian Carver (Christmas Island/Spirit Photography).

And below is info for the record:

In the punk-rock prime of his youth, Ryan Rousseau (aka Elvis Wong) saw himself cutting his teeth as the drummer for the Wongs, eventually hooking up with Jay Reatard to play in the Reatards, and dividing his time between the former band in Arizona and the latter in Memphis. Ryan soon recorded the first Destruction Unit 7?, a blistering slab of synth-punk, which eventually led Ryan to Tuscon?s drony, synth-heavy Digital Leather. Ryan in turn filled in from time to time on drums for Jay and Alix?s Angry Angles, and eventually found himself recording two more LPs under the Destruction Unit moniker with help from Jay and Alicja starting up the southwestern punk act Tokyo Electron, and exploring his more melodic, post-punk roots with Earthmen and Strangers. After the death of Jay Reatard in early 2010, Ryan resurrected Destruction Unit, this time emphasizing more psych/kraut/desert rock influences on their first LP, Eclipse, in FDH Records. For their second LP, Sonoran, due out in April from Volar Records, the group has almost completely stripped away whatever synth-punk leanings they were holding on to, creating a purely ?desert-at-night? psych/kraut/space-rock album best enjoyed on the long nightly drives through the barren wastelands of the Southwest.

Destruction Unit will be here in San Diego this weekend to play two shows, Friday
at the Tin Can Ale House with Tar Halos (members of Riververb, Sugarrush Railroad) and Shiva Trash (members of the Sess) and DJ Ryan Hand, and Saturday at Til-Two with Ale Mania and Stalins of Sound and DJ Tyrone. They'll also be playing May 7th at the Palo Verde Lounge in Phoenix, Az with Lenguas Largas (look for the upcoming 12" on Volar in June), Nihilism, Far Corners, and DJ Horsepussy.

6X2X12 - Various Artists

Volar Records (2010)

Volar Records 6x2x12 compilation has been on my highly anticipated list for quite some time. Three Canadian bands (Calgary?s Sharp Ends, Montreal?s O?Voids, Vancouver?s Defektors) and three San Diego California bands (Ale Mania, Spirit Photography and The Beaters), each more or less sonically related.  Starting things off are Vancouver?s Defektors, a band I have had a love/hate relationship with, in that I completely love their stuff on the Emergency Room comp and their singles, but found the LP to be lacking the spark that got me interested in the first place. Luckily, Defektors bring out some A-material here, unlike Montreal?s O?Voids, who phone in an instrumental that is entirely disappointing because I have obsessive relationships with everything else they?ve released. The Canadian side goes out on a high-note with Calgary?s Sharp Ends and an excellent recording of their set-staple ?Whiteout.? All biases aside, ?Whiteout? is the best thing on this comp. The San Diego side of the comp makes a compelling case for the quality of music coming out of that city. Ale Mania and The Beaters both work out apocalyptic post-punk dark jams that has me eager to hear more from both, yet Spirit Photography?s contribution, ?Where is the Light.? stands out on the B-Side, totally in their own league. Excellent release here. (Paul Lawton)

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / Black Orphan 7" EP (the Spits)

Still got a few these left on grey vinyl.  Here's a nice review courtesy of 7inches.blogspot.com.

http://7inches.blogspot.com/2011/03/black-orphan-on-volar-records.html

This Black Orphan single just came in with a batch of Volar's latest...I actually remember this Melchior/F&O's split from a long time ago and it looks like they've been busy this past winter.
So I put this on, not really knowing where that mask face was taking me and damn if you don't go one minute from stripped down primal rock to nightmare electronic death in the space of a few minutes in the world of singles, that's 7inches. This single is a 4 song, mini EP from Black Orphan which I know Mr. Sniper would greatly appreciate.

The A-Side, 'Metal Leg' is a chopped heavily gated fuzz guitar with live drums and all kinds of ancient synth sounds glitching. There's a deep hardly discernible Sisters of Mercy vocal gothing away under the definitely home recorded sounding affair. The claustrophobia and the alienation that these sort of sounds inherently have when patched straight onto magnetic tape, bounced down, and dubbed.

The next one, 'Asteroids' is surprisingly melodic once you get under the haze of layered guitars, that trebly click from a disembodied drum track rising out of the underwater hiss. A phasery warbling vocal gives this ominous bass heavy track some breathing room and catchiness. This theremin-like solo is a nice touch. 'Asteroids' is almost sing-a-longable except that there isn't a human voice to recognize. There's humanity is all over these changes and it still has the warped sensibility of a more experimental Lou Barlow cassette collage. When it either gets sick of hearing it's own voice that it injects this machine and dehumanizing effect into the mix to stay surprising especially to the creators.

The front of this sleeve even echo's Blank Dogs mask iconography. Of course it's always creepy to have this human stand-in staring back at you, whose lack of expression never changes, it's a good choice for the robots. Then on the reverse there's some kind of disturbing nail ridden man doll. A bit heavy handed maybe, but why not scare off the alt country scene looking for a good cry and maybe appeal to the metal crowd.

'Doorways', from the B-Side keeps this intense hyper layered, 4track guitar sound going. Also like Blank Dogs, when you finally get down to that base melody, it sticks with you. It's not easy to unearth, and the harsh electronics keep pushing back but that's all part of the challenge here.
'Slain' has a decidedly goth feel, digital tom pad rhythms and (actual) organ sound with electronics. Here a real human voice only can whisper 'Ahhhh' in a quiet wail. The sounds are sci-fi - detached from any organic instrumentation or even those sounds that attempt to mimic an instrument. They get into the machines and program the sine waves, the envelopes so this hissy bleep isn't going to remind you of anything out there in the natural world.
These sounds have that unsettling quality because they only exist in synth, it's a subconscious instrument and Black Orphan is aware that it's not a cheap imitation of life, but another form altogether.
So it stays creepy, they even exploit the atmosphere and it's caught between the dawn of synth days and the nihilism and alienation of a punk sound. It's all slightly hidden, shrouded in being captured on second rate equipment. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Disturbing in that subtle intellectual cold way, rejecting the huge sound metal surface horror and getting deeper into something that's hard to leave behind.

Waiting for more of the intersection of angsty high school 7Inches and the realities of real problems 7inches.

If anything else on the label remotely resembles this single, I'm going to have to do some ordering from Volar Records, like the Destruction Unit LP, Dirt Dress 7", Pope Anything 7", Cold Pumas 7" super pack for $30 bucks!

Properly, now.

So we've got a few things coming out late April for ya.  Really quickly wanted to say that we had a total blast at SXSW and wanted to thank everyone profusely for playing/attending/hosting.  I'll have a proper post soon regarding SXSW with some news, but for now, here's a list of the four releases coming out in a few weeks.  I'm offering a batch deal for all four titles for $30 even, which saves on shipping and allows you to enjoy all four titles at once.

VOLAR09--Cold Pumas--"Dawn Lobby"/"Fourth Date" 7"
400 on black, 100 on blue

I've been talking to these UK gents for a bit about doing something, and it's finally almost here.  It only took me hearing a couple of songs online to drop them a line and ask them about doing a record, and I couldn't be happier.  Taking from the great 20 Jazz Funk Greats website regarding "Dawn Lobby":

"A reassuringly pounding entry into 2011, Cold Pumas return is furnished with the same speeding metronomic abandon that made last year?s Jela so beloved among its cultists.  Reverb drenched guitar peaks now find themselves mixed with half recognised post-punk riffs but, more significantly, the vocals that were once subservient to the thunderous machine of guitar and drums now glide up through the mix and, in a glorious twist, end the track in a ghostly Galaxy 500 reverie.  Stunning.  And this is the B-side!"

Listen to both tracks below, and peruse the nice things Pitchfork also had to say regarding the release.

VOLAR12--Pope Anything "Witch Tits" 7" EP

200 on black, 100 on blue

Here we have the debut by Jimmy Vincent's Pope Anything out of LA.  Four great tracks of cavernous pop/post-punk, look for PA to start cutting their teeth around LA and the West Coast in the near future.  Listen to "Up Against the Walls" below, read some nice words, watch some old live footage.  7" artwork by Tim Presley of White Fence/Darker My Love/Strange.

VOLAR13--Destruction Unit-<i>Sonoran</i> LP

400 on black, 100 on blue

I can't be happier to be releasing this.

Listen the album closer, "Death Tunnel."

VOLAR14--Dirt Dress-"Alligator Lungs"/"Weight of Time" 7"

200 on black, 100 on blue

Another fairly new, rising LA act, Dirt Dress make their vinyl debut here after a series of well-received cassette releases and offer up the ridiculously catchy "Alligator Lungs" in addition to "Weight of Time."  They occupy some magical space of weird garage-pop and have been wowing audiences up in LA for some time, enough that they had a residency at the now-defunct Spaceland.  Listen to "Alligator Lungs" below, read some stuff.
