Music Shit / Re: Best Registrators Record
« on: July 13, 2017, 04:07:10 PM »
I only recently finally came across a copy of "16 Wires" (maybe 2 years ago? That's recent enough in my mind). I almost passed it, I wasn't expecting that cover. Had to be the most un-Rip Off cover of all RO releases. But... I think I like "16 Wires" a bit more than "Terminal Boredom."

Funny, I was thinking about these records while driving home from work today.

People in Austin sleep with someone new every week? I live in Austin and I don't sleep with someone new every week. I'd totally sleep with someone new every week! I'm doing something wrong, clearly.

Don't they watch a "Fritz the Cat" like cartoon? Maybe with their shirts off?

I was spoiled, grew up in New Brunswick NJ, where punk rock first started showing its face here in New Jersey, so the stores all seemed pretty hip to it. You could get more cool import stuff in New York or Philly but the stores here were not slouches.

Cheap Thrills was the first spot I began buying punk records. That chubby dude from That Metal Show used to work the counter there on occasion. Cheap Thrills had a heavy selection of all the newest punk records coming out (US and UK stuff), and the people who worked there had no problems telling you what was good.

New Brunswick had other shops that catered to punk rock as well. You had All Ears, Flamin' Groovies (which became Captain Video and later Music In A Different Kitchen), and in neighboring East Brunswick you had Crazy Eddie's which had a little punk and a lot of new wave, and Prob Records which also catered to some punk stuff.

Cheap Thrills changed me from saving my lunch money for AC/DC and Queen records to all sorts of punk records.

I lived in New Brunswick from '95-'00. I think I remember Cheap Thrills... if it's the place I'm thinking of I saw some of the early Humpers albums on LP (that another friend bought first!) so wound up getting the CDs. Got a bunch of Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet 7"s. I can't believe I remember that!

I liked Sound on Sound (in New Brunswick area) and bought the first 5 Ramones LPs for $5 each in pretty good condition. This would have been maybe 1996? Don't think SoS lasted more than a year or so. Got some Oblivians "Soul Food" and Teengenerate "Get Action" used even though they weren't that old.

Curmudgeon and Vintage Vinyl had their finds (last time I was at VV was maybe 8 or so years ago and it seemed mostly metal). VV had a lot of Crypt, Sympathy and Rip Off Records. I bought the Mummies "Tales from the Crypt" boot from VV (they had 3 copies at one time!) in maybe '97? I remember VV selling a Rip Offs t-shirt (of the "Got a Record" cover) but I refused to buy it cuz it was a shitty print on a shitty Hanes undershirt. Little did I know!

I'd say Flipside Records in Pompton Lakes, NJ broke my cherry. It's still open and although I only make it there once a year (when I'm back home visiting family) I still see some records that I know have been in the bins since the mid-'90s. Dan still runs the joint and sometimes he looks at me like he recognizes me, although truthfully I haven't been a regular since the early '00s.

I'ma order mine soon, I swears!

I thought we had an understanding that this year would purposely not be good, since I don't think I can afford to go. No one listens to me.

I've enjoyed all the ones I've gone to so far. I'm def down for Pere Ubu but I have tix for the Damned same night as RFTT so hopefully I can make it down the street in time!

Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / Re: fucking sxsw 2017

I'm hoping to get Thurs and Fri off for day shows, but not looking likely. Apparently all the millenials I work with still think they're entitled to Spring Break off so they took all the request off slots and I'm wait listed.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Eating handfuls of kale...
« on: February 23, 2017, 04:24:14 PM »
"You can't out train a shitty diet." Very true. I recently ran a half marathon and I wasn't getting enough calories/carbs from high quality food and ate more processed shit than I had in years and definitely felt more sluggish for it, regardless of how much I was running.

I started eating healthier around 25 (gonna turn 40 this year), avoided veggies til then and was a super picky eater. Probably started eating kale around then too. I've been eating fruit/veggies with every meal for over 10 years now and started exercising shortly before I hit 30. I definitely feel better in my 30s than I did in my 20s, combination of exercise and eating right. I try to stick to high quality foods instead of processed foods and do give myself some cheat days (I can't give up burgers or bbq, but eat them irregularly these days).

I feel kale is good for keeping one regular, although I go through phases of either salads or broccoli/carrots to switch it up. I've been cutting back on coffee and beer over the past year too, I'm sure that helps in feeling better overall.

Similar but not the same:
Tom Waits' "Heart of Saturday Night" and Frank Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours".

Non-Music Shit / Re: what are you reading?
« on: February 14, 2017, 05:38:09 PM »
I'll have to look into that Lenin book, I've been wanting to read something on him for a while.

Recently finished "Legacy of Ashes" by Time Weiner, history of the CIA. Weiner gets everyone to speak on the record and uses lots of declassified docs. Not surprised that the CIA has been corrupt and ineffectual since day one, so it surprises me that the agency is still functioning.

Currently reading "Zodiac" by Robert Graysmith. I recently watched the '70s Zodiac movie and then the 2007 movie (which was based on Graysmith's work). I'm about 2/3 through it and I really want Graysmith to say "I really think so-and-so was definitely the Zodiac" but it's doubtful; he changed so many suspects' names it's doubtful the book has anything libelous in it.

Thanks guys!
The 2 issues I found unfortunately didn't come with the singles but now I have stuff to add to my ever growing want list.

Anyone have any info on this zine? Picked up 2 issues for $1 each at my local record store this weekend. It looks like it's from '93-'94 maybe, out of England. It's almost all garage/budget rock. Interviews with Supercharger and a Rip Offs tour diary by Shane White. A cursory Google search reveals it eBay-ed for around $20 at some point, some other auction site I've never heard of, and a mention from a Termbo review around 2005.
