Pop Punk / Obi Strips
« on: February 13, 2014, 01:46:14 PM »
Awhile ago I put a message on here asking about a different cover for the first Generation X lp I had seen on ebay.  Turns out it wasn't a different cover but a Obi strip horizontally placed at the bottom of the sleeve as opposed to the usual vertical side placement. This was issued with some of the original pressing and seems to be pretty rare. The Gen X lp is a strange beast anyway as it opens at the top and is flat, ie no square spine. This would make an Obi strip much easier to apply so perhaps that was why the lp sleeve was issued that way.

ANYWAY, does anyone know anything about the history of the Obi strip? Was the Gen X lp the first Punk record to have one? Any particularly cool ones?

Music Shit / Artists you have the most records by.
« on: January 26, 2014, 02:27:47 PM »
Even though I haven't bought a new record by them in over 25 years (and there has been a regrettable amount of opportunities to do so) Hawkwind remain the clear winners in taking up space on my shelves. Over 30 lps and 12"s and I reckon I still play about 10 of them regularly which isn't too shabby.

Music Shit / Music Made By Assholes
« on: December 22, 2013, 01:36:10 PM »
While listening to Total Abuse the other day I couldn't help thinking of their ill fated European tour and their alleged scene point losing indescretions. The only one I recall was one of them urinating in someone's room but, come on, we've all done it right?
Anyway, I got to thinking about assholes who make music. Marley sprang to mind immediately but then even he was obliterated by Clapton who has to be the biggest asshole in music ever. There are are tons though so name your favourites.

Non-Music Shit / MP3 Players; What ya got, what's it like?
« on: December 12, 2013, 10:56:04 PM »
WARNING! The following could be extremely boring.

About  18 months ago my Iriver IHP-140 whIch I had used for over 7 years gave up the ghost (or so I thought, turned out it just needed a new battery, a whole other hassle) and I was forced to buy a new MP3 player. I had originally bought the Iriver as I didn't want an ipod as they had battery problems, were twice the price of the Iriver and didn't have the ability to record analogue, the Iriver was a superb device for recording vinyl.

I now have a Cowon X7 which appears to be the only real option as a decent replacement with the same capacity and abilities. It does have it's problems though and what is strange is that although it has something like 20 different sound settings rock, jazz etc everything sounds best on the hip hop setting!!??

I would be interested to know what other people have and what the devices are capable of, quality etc. There seems to be a huge gulf in the mid priced market for a device with a decent capacity.

Non-Music Shit / Ebay global shipping program
« on: November 27, 2013, 12:06:52 AM »
Has anybody used this system? Sorry State sent me a package for a third of the cheapest US postal price to the UK by using it a few months back. It also charges any import charges at checkout stopping the Uk postal service charging a 20 dollar handling fee to tell you you're being charged import fees

Music Shit / The Next Pistols
« on: November 14, 2013, 12:05:51 PM »
The media in the UK were seriously running out of ideas by the mid 80's and the race was on to find the 'Next Pistols'. Here's the ones I remember;
Jesus & The Mary Chain!! I mean seriously, can you imagine? The Never Understand video shows them looking bored and kicking a drum about and suddenly it's all anarchy and chaos. A dreadful band and no mistake. They were also sonically compared to Husker Du but better, the NME that was, terrible.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik. The mid 80's really were awful, '86 being particularly dire.
Beastie Boys. They came to the UK wearing shades and baseball caps and the yoof started stealing and wearing VW badges. The nation were appalled, if only it had been BMW badges. A fight worth fighting.
Nirvana. The US version of Grebo but less exciting and relevant.
Daisy Chainsaw. The last one I remember and the most appealing but by '92 I couldn't give a fuck anyway.

Were there more? There must have been some between '78 and '84 but I don't think the Anti Nowhere League count do they?

Music Shit / Bands that define termbo
« on: October 18, 2013, 02:04:43 AM »
When I first started following this board there was a definite vibe about The Spits, Marked Men, The Sleaze, Home Blitz, Homostupids etc. Now it seems there is very little interest in any current bands maybe I'm not looking at the right threads? So, which bands define termbo now, if any?

Non-Music Shit / Your morning routine
« on: October 16, 2013, 11:23:39 PM »
It was once said that all a man needs in the morning is a smoke a coffee and a wank.
It's hard to argue with is that, although unfortunately I had to give up smoking.
