that comics exhibit looks awesome. definetely have to check that out sometime soon.

more Warren Oates praise: when i was in paris in august i got to see Monte Hellman's The Shooting starring oates and a young jack nicholson. one of the best western i've seen and great performances from both.
also got to see The King of Marvin Gardens starring nicholson and bruce dern. great 70s drama with an outstanding opening monologue.

went dvd shopping today. got Flesh + Blood. coolest medieval epic ever. lots of great action and sex.
the last detail. nicholson's best in my opinion.
and Pier Pasolini's Porcile. great 60s italian haunting "intellectual" art drama. two parallel stories of a modern businessman, and a roaming cannibal in the middle ages. cannibal played by Pierre Clementi who is probably the coolest european actor ever.

watched Sedmikrasky aka Daisies. great fun czech new wave flick about two cute girls running amok. also recommended.

if youve seen city of god youve gotta see BUS 174. great documentary about a guy in brazil who held a bus hostage in brazil. goes into all the social stuff like the shitty police department they have and the situation with the street kids. really well done and informative. shit like that happens everywhere. when i was in Honduras during x-mas a few days these gang members hijacked a bus and opened fire with machine guns killing about 40 people on the bus. this happened the day before x-mas eve. the next day there were fucking tanks by the shopping mall. even though i grew up there and saw tons of poverty, its still a shock going back there and seeing and hearing about all this stuff. i've actually seen kids trying to sell dogs to people in their cars at stoplights.

another similar and amazing movie about street kids is Luis Bunuel's Los Olvidados. one of his best.

havent seen a movie in the theaters in a while. nothing new has peaked my interest in a while but i need to take advantage of all the old stuff they show here in nyc. missed out on all the Janus films they were showing, and Bad Ronald a few weeks ago. one of my favorite things about living here is Mondo Kim's. they have so much stuff and have gotten to see a lot of stuff i would never see anywhere else.

yet another option is to focus or explore other interests. still think theres plenty great stuff, but i'm in a phase of not listening to stuff that much. most of what i buy regardless of greatness usually only gets a spin or two. i'm much more focused on movies right now, reading criticism/guides/bios and watching as much as i can of different genres/countries/eras. i spend more time watching movies than listening to records these days.

Quote
Brick: I was annoyed for the first thirty minutes of Brick, really annoyed, almost left the room annoyed but I stayed with it and I am glad I did. It is a really good movie and the noir gimmick winds up working.

i felt the same way. it started too cool and self conscious of its Noir-ness for its own good with all the dialogue, but once the story kicked in it didnt affect it. really good movie.

Gene Hackman along with Nicholson, Pacino, Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton is on of those 70s actors where you can trust almost anything he was in during that decade. Scarecrow which he was in with Pacino is a good one. The Conversation is incredible. My fave Hackman and FF Coppola movie. one of the best movie endings ever.

re: Aronofsky. Pi is great. Requiem for a Dream i didnt like but he's a good director. i just cringe at the fact of a new Lone Wolf and Cub. those movies are sacred to me. no need to fuck with perfection.

the Ich Bin lp is awesome. "DANGER: BRUCE WILLIS" always cracks me up.

the Les Club De Chats cd-r beats the single. one of my fave live bands this year. i like the Lawrence Wasser single too but live they were so much better. same thing with cheveu. thought the eps were ok, but live they are a different beast. cd-r does them more justice. the song in spanish is my fave.

didnt pay much attention to reissues this year but the two Hans A Plast lps are a fucking godsend.
