A couple years ago, I had a conversation with Chris Strachwitz, the guy who runs Yazoo and pretty much a record label legend, on the subject of vinyl. He said that he didnt think that he had a market for vinyl, that his audience was CD. I told him that his main market might be CD but that he had a market for vinyl, though it isnt probably more than 500 - 2000 on any one release. Not interested. Numbers arent big enough to justify. Not that they need to. I really doubt the "death of the cd" or filesharing has affected them much. If anything it has hurt them in developing a younger audience, but no impact on their regulars. If you go to Strachwitz's store, Downhome Music, he has plenty of back catalog on vinyl (as well as titles on other reissuers) and for awhile it was all at pre-cd prices, but when dealers started grazing the store for ebay material, they quickly upped the prices. At best you can get some stuff for $10 or $15 but a lot of it is $25+. I know they also have vinyl in their warehouse but after several attempts to get at it, I gave up. I also asked a couple times about buying their vinyl from them at wholesale prices for resale. Nope. And then asked about reissuing some of their stuff on vinyl. Nope. Like a lot of archivists, they are very protective about what they uncovered. More than happy to donate it to Smithsonian or a public archive, not so happy to turn it over to a (perceived) for profit biz.
