The Aislers Fucking Set

Guilty pleasure or not, this band had some awesome pop tunes.  All three albums are stellar; especially enjoying "The Last March" lately.

I used to be too but lately I've really been into A.S. more.  Never saw them live but I hear Amy Linton sometimes does live acoustic shows.  Probably a better studio band, though.

actually no, the Aislers Set were a superior live band when Jen was still in the band. Their last east coast tour (they opened for Belle & Sebastian on the East Coast in 2002) was kind of thrown together, and just "very good," whereas their NYC shows in 2000 (Shelllife party/Front Street Loft in May, NYU/Knitting Factory in December) are some of my more cherished memories of live shows. The Knitting Factory show particularly (which opened with their cover of "warm girls,") was jaw dropping. The lps never quite capture how loud and powerful the band was.

Amy is still around: http://events.nytimes.com/2008/01/30/dining/reviews/30briefs.html?ref=dining

Never liked Aisler Set's records. Always seemed to have a dull sheen to them. And they were much better live. However, both live and on record I'll take Henry's Dress any day.

The odd thing about the Aisler's Set is that the Last Match sounds better on cd than on Vinyl. I can't explain it. Something is abit muddy about the vinyl mastering which is probably the "odd sheen," referenced above. "Terrible Things Happen" sounds better on vinyl than on cd. On record, I think the "Been Hiding/Fire Engines" 7" is probably their highlight. "Fire Engines" is a monster of a song, and i've been listening to it in my rental car all week.  Please note: I do not currently own the above record, and would like to acquire one.

Henry's Dress only NYC show was on their tour with Rocketship (1995) and was at the Frying Pan. I think Karen 1% (or whatever she called it) put it on, and they only advertised in the Voice like a quarter of the times they had shows, so I didn't know about it.  I did however catch Go Sailor's show at the Fez in November 1996.... I even sat at the Chickfactor table.

Not sure but I would guess that SS has primarily heard Terrible Things Happen since it's their first. That record's a little fuzzy sounding since it's almost all Amy & was done primarily at home. The Last Match certainly doesn't have a dull sheen to my ears - I think that record sounds great.  Then again, I think the Henry's Dress record has kind of a dull sheen. That's a record that seems like it should be a favorite of mine but I never listen to it.
