I liked that Red Monkey back in the day. Had all the records. They played a show at the Loft in Sacto which was alright, but not as good as expected. Talked to them later, and it seemed like the drummer was totally isolated emotionally from the band or something weird like that. Major tension. Can't say I've reached back to relisten very often in about 7-8 years.

I had all the Antioch Arrow, too, but I wasn't rolling on the floor crying. That first record was pretty life-affirming to me at age 22. That last uber-goth trip they had did have me rolling on the floor....in laughter!

Red Monkey are kinda weak for that Slampt scene. I think they lasted longer though (a.k.a. into the 00's) and actually made it to the U.S. (two or three times at least) so they're a bit better known over here.  I believe Mr. Troubleman still has their records in print.

Red Monkey always seemed lame. I have a soft spot for some Milky Wimpshake songs though.

Red Monkey never struck me as remotely top-tier among the Slampt bands.  I think a case could be made that Skinned Teen, Kenickie, Golden Starlet, Avocado Baby, and Yummy Fur all were more interesting.  Though overall, I think this whole lot has not aged well in my book.  I don't hear a whole lot of clamoring for Huggy Bear retrospectives these days.

I want that Huggy Bear retrospective and I want it now.

I'm really desperate for the first Yummy Fur 7" (and only one on Slampt). Seriously.

i think Huggy Bear's output has held up really well.  i still listen to the KRS 10" that comped the UK singles on the regular

i saw Red Monkey in a basement in Boston with Sin Eaters, a short-lived Ted Leo project.  really fun show but Red Monkey seemed homesick and miserable

That's genius as is the split 12" with Bikini Kill.

Slampt was the UK's leading Riot Grrrl/post Ron Johnson label in the mid-late 90's. Bands included Yummy Fur, International Strikeforce, Pussycat Trash, Male Nurse (Guided Missile), Red Monkey, Milky Wimpshake, Sally Skull, Golden Starlet (pre-International Strikefore) et al. I have argued that this may be the last non-bull shit underground rock/UK DIY punk label. (present company excluded.)

red monkey were boring when they are around and i imagine the stuff has stayed boring.

the best thing about the loft show was the "sexist" fight between the band and some of the audience, who were trying to bait them with some all american smart ass show us your tits, which they didnt take as tongue in cheek.

they were the weakest of the slampt bands (or tied for weakest)
