The problem with Ariel Pink is his influences is 70's LITE ROCK. I wanted to like this shit when Jaguar first hipped me to it, but it just didn't really jibe with me. It's not that bad or anything, but it's not good.

TermBos that have not met the guy write him off as a pampered rich kid who is unauthentic. TermBos that have met him say he really is genuinely strange. Opinion remains divided upon these lines, and the whole 70s soft rock vibe of many songs.....which is really a matter of whether you share that same perverse fascination with the man.

I dig the House Arrest Lp a lot. His stuff can be awesome but he's pretty spotty (tons of releases) but there are some cool jams.

He does have some alright songs. I went through a hater phase based on my impression of him as a spoiled LA jew. I'm over it. Whatever, doesn't change the fact that his shit is yacht rock with ass production.

Let's put it this way......If you're ever up late at night and see the infomercial for the TIME/LIFE collection of 70s hits, and then you find it oddly appealing and cannot turn away, then you probably owe it to yourself to try on some Ariel Pink. If you quickly change the channel or wanna puke, just pass!

i think some of his songs are really great, but not all.  i went through a HUGE ariel pink listening spree summer of 2006.  my roommates and i listened to him pretty much every day.  saw him w/ gang gang dance and octis in 07 and it was pretty cool.  will probably go to his show w/ little claw in portland next month.  not every song is good, but i can 't think of many bands where i like every single song so whatever... also i like some yacht rock i guess, because i sang doobie bros at karaoke on friday.  so um, good times.  wouldn't call him punk or even weird punk though.  lo fi yacht rock sounds about right.   def. not for everybody or even most people, but then what stuff on this board would you recommend to most people?

I mentioned on here seeing him years ago in LA, he came off like a douche but the set was pretty fun. I'd never heard of him before that night, and I have no interest in hearing the recorded stuff. He seems to think he's some sorta addled guru.

i saw him play like two years ago, never really listened to him. he's alright IMO, would never buy his stuff, but if someone plays his stuff, my ears ain't bleeding or nothing.  i remember him being a big vag about the sound though (guess da sound guy sucked, don't really remember) and he was pretty upset about it after da show, i hurd  someone had to comfort him until he felt better.

Ya gotta understand that some of my resentment towards the dude had to do with the fact that I was making lo-fi music for years under the name Pink Reason (and getting heckled with shit like "worst band ever" when we could get shows, which wasn't often) when all of a sudden all these people I knew started talking about some other dude with "pink" in his band name who was supposedly doing the same thing, and then I listened to it and even wanted to like it at first but felt like "woah, this shit is really cheesy." So I kinda backlashed against all that. I got nothing against the dude. I'm sure he's cool. Not so into most of his tunes though.

It's probably nice shit to smoke a joint and hang out by the water to, I'd imagine.

R. Stevie's shit can be pretty amazing, pretty fucked up and the sign of a brilliantly deranged mind. He's been doing the basement thing forever, seemingly half trying to be famous or at least recognized and half totally exploiting the lack of restrictions on his craft. If you don't like a certain recording, fast forward a couple years in his catalog and it will be very different.
