I'm not moved enough by any Ariel Pink I've heard to actually buy any of his music, but I was really curious about seeing him live after the extremely unfavorable reviews came back after he played the Blue Lamp here in Sacto a couple years back. A lot of his big fans were really turned off by what they described as a long rambly jam that didn't resemble any of the songs they loved. Nor did it fit the style, and lotsa people commented on his attitude being very strange and maniacal on-stage. I know that it ended with him getting kicked out, and the manager of the club banning him from coming back. I was kinda bummed that I missed such a flameout.
I got my chance a few months later when he'd come back. Apparently, the dude that booked that show at Blue Lamp never got the message from the manager that Ariel Pink was to never come back, so he booked it again at the Blue Lamp. After he'd already loaded in and was in the midst of his soundcheck, the manager recognized him and started throwing a fit...."YOU!?!?! NO, NOT YOU!?!?! WHAT DID I SAY LAST TIME??!!!? GET OUTTA HERE!!!"
So he loaded out and left, leaving the promoter high and dry pretty much...Dozens of people were waiting for refunds when some kids on bikes made it back from the Blue Lamp to a house where we were having a little show. Phonecalls were made, and we managed to unlock Fools Foundation and get Ariel Pink in there, and several of the people followed him over from the Blue Lamp. The show then really clicked. He played all his "hits" for his adoring fans. They were happy. I was actually much more impressed with it live and on record. But I was still curious as to when this alterego would come out and spoil the show, like what was reported last time. Well, it did surface eventually.....they played a ridiculous disco psychjam outro to a song that just get mutating and getting funnier and weirder, and Ariel Pink was making all these gesticulations like he had itching powder, and then all of a sudden, he'd be all cool and collected and acting shamanistic...and then he'd start pretending to fly and swim through the air, all while yelping into the mic like he was trying to get people to party harder. One by one the fans started to file out after this "outro" exceeded the ten minute mark. It was clear that this ship was taking off and not coming back to earth. This was some serious comedy gold.
So even if you don't like him, I recommend you check out the live show and hope it all goes horribly wrong.
