That dude from Smog ran the Replacements fanzine "Willpower." Bill Calahan or whatever. He drew little comics where Tommy Stinson would be walking around and shit as well as Joan Rivers style banter about Replacements minutia. This was around the time he was making his early recordings.

Not trying to be nit-picky, but  I can't find anywhere in this thread where Kevin is protective of a scene (be it one that does or doesn't exist...) 

Are you referring to when he said that both Pink Reason and Ariel Pink have been described as lo-fi?  Because I'm sure a quick google search could show that both bands have been described as such. 

The only time I saw him getting protective of anything is when someone made a personal jab suggesting that the emotions in his songs aren't real.

Not trying to stick up for him or anything.... just seriously wondering.  Thanks!

I'm not going to speak on Kevin's behalf, but my understanding is that his music turns out the way it does because it has to either due to financial issues or other such circumstances. When someone more privileged, such as Ariel Pink, records his stuff lo-fi it is a conscious effort to sound that way, and therefore comes off as somewhat contrived. The same thing applies to Wavves.

i haven't seen ariel pink or wavves bank statements, but can't people record a certain way because they like how it sounds?  seems reasonable enough to me.
