the much needed Brooklyn/NYC/NJ restaurant thread...
« on: March 13, 2009, 10:58:42 AM »

Discuss your observations on fine cuisine here and make your predictions about which restaurants will or should be victims of the economic downturn here...

I'll start by paraphrasing Anal Satan in the lunch thread... Silent H. really sucks...

I noticed in the Williamsburg New American roundup of a previous thread we neglected to mention Moto and Dressler which probably both warrant some critique. Haven't eaten at Dresser (someone asked me to get in on their group reservation for New Years but I opted to save the couple hundred bucks I'd inevitably spend to ring in the new year at a friend's house party) but I do fully stand behind Moto as one of the more solid and dependable south side destinations.

My aunt gave me the diner's deck which is like a deck of cards that gives you 20 bucks or so (or a certain percentage maybe?) off of your meal so trying to hit a bunch of places I'd not ordinarily eat at. Will report on the results. Great Jones is included in the deck BTW if anyone is up for another meetup over there.

both are solid. i'd go to moto more if i lived closer... dressler is one of my top picks in my completely imaginary brooklyn restaurant death pools. i just don't think dressler deserves the price premium which its pricing structure includes.

What you don't like Kielbasa Banh Mi??  I like the restaurant that used to be there better, forgot the name of it.

As far as the death pool goes I really don't understand how any of these places are staying open.  I'd really like to see some return to values dining options, I can post some of my musings on these later.  Besides, now that I'm single I don't go anywhere nice to eat anyways.

RE: Pookie's previous Death Watch prediction - we are 3 months into the new year already and so far as I can tell Dumont is still flippin' those burgers. Just sayin'.

Anyone who works at Academy care to comment on how the economic downturn has affected the flock of Cool Water scented douche that used to congregate around SEA every night?

Eh, the food at SEA is cheap though, that's the difference.

It's not the food that I take issue with....

still there. last night this older woman (late 40s) asked me where the Thai restaurant she had seen on Sex And The City was. i also like the food. i get the lunch special at least once a week.

Zenkichi is maybe my favorite restaurant for overall dining experience. Only a once a year kind of thing. Going this monday.

right, right... I'm just saying the low cost wouldnt really put them on the economic downturn death watch.  Crowd is horrible, I couldnt agree more.  Some asshole proposed to his girlfriend when I was there once and the whole restaurant cheered.  I wanted to dump some curry on all of them.

Same owners as Spice BTW, those guys are definitely doing well.

Speaking of lunch specials when I was working over there I would hit up the Samurai Sushi lunch special at least twice a week (cycling out between that place and SEA - no wonder I was 10 or 15 lbs. heavier around that time!). Anyway best dollar-to-sushi value in the neighborhood at 10 bucks for 3 rolls, salad, soup, and unlimited green tea.

o.k. - just a reminder - i said dumont by the lorimer l, not dumont burger. i expect dumont burger to do fine. I'm standing behind my other prediction...

when it opened, sea had pretty good food. I haven't been in years. when it opened, chai has pretty good food too. i'm still trying to figure out if these are my mind-altered vegan dining experiences or semi-objective truths.

I think I already chimed in on Zenkichi as "the best date/special occasion restaurant in the 'burg."

keep in mind that with restaurants it's rental cost too which is a huge factor. this means that newer restaurants (silent h./nita nita) or recently renewed restaurants are probably worse off.

None in particular but I can always make time to a visit. It's more like whenever the mood strikes.
