Terry Hughes

Justin or Mike or Sarim have you ever heard this record? It's a 7", "Mutiny On French Street" b/w "Girl From Bayonne", from 1986 somewhere in NJ. The A side is probably the most New Brunswick-specific song ever recorded. "Girl From Bayonne" sounds like a much cheesier version of early GG, and "Mutiny..." has the same chords as "Don't Talk To Me". Totally stupid. He thanks Detention, TMA, and Jigs & The Pigs on the back.

1st stab at a discography:

Terry Hughes - Time to Turn / So Glad 7" Rubber Ball 171, 1982 PS
Jigs & the Pigs - The Reason I Rock / My Nature 7" Force, 1982 PS
Terry Hughes & the Backyard Party - Hey Leo / Your Fool 7" Mountain MS-1, 1984 PS
Hughes, Baldwin, Rachel - Temporary High / Somewhere Else 7" Rubber Ball MPPA 7094, 1985 NS?
Terry Hughes - Mutiny on French Street / Girl From Bayonne 7" Rubber Ball, 1986 PS

Terry plays guitar for Jigs, and Jigs is on some of his records.  There are at least 2 Jigs & the Pigs comp appearances, but I don't own the LPs so don't know if Terry plays on them.

I found 2 copies of the Hughes, Baldwin, Rachel 45, which I previously didn't know existed, in a dirty New Brunswick basement today.  Both were sleeveless, but I kind of wonder if they were just missing the cover.  The A-side is a good tough powerpopper.  All these records are worth owning, although I haven't heard "Mutiny on French Street / Girl from Bayonne".  I will trade my spare of Hughes, Baldwin, Rachel or "Time to Turn / So Glad" (also found today) for one.

By the way, Terry is really easy to find online.  He runs a music studio with the same name as his old record label.  I know I'm not the only person who has left voicemails for him, which he completely ignores.  Don't try it.

Just noticed Collin's blog post from a week and a half ago:

And an older one:

The "Hey Leo" 45 (his weakest offering in my opinion, but I have one filed) is still available from Midnight Records for $4:

Updated discography:

Terry Hughes - Time to Turn / So Glad 7" Rubber Ball 171, 1982 PS
Jigs & the Pigs - The Reason I Rock / My Nature 7" Force, 1982 PS (guitar)
Brian Jaye - Sit Back Sally / I'm Not That Cool 7" Rubber Ball 171, 1983 PS (guitar/songwriting/production/engineering)
Guided Missles - Surfers From the Future LP Beach Break no # 1983 (produced 3 tracks, sings backup on 1)
Terry Hughes & the Backyard Party - Hey Leo / Your Fool 7" Mountain MS-1, 1984 PS
Hughes, Baldwin, Rachel - Temporary High / Somewhere Else 7" Rubber Ball MPPA 7094, 1985 NS?
Terry Hughes - Mutiny on French Street / Girl From Bayonne 7" Rubber Ball, 1986 PS

I found the Brian Jaye record cheaply at the WFMU fair this past weekend.  It's pretty good, in the same style as all his records.

There's a Hughes, Baldwin, Rachel track on an LP called "comPILEation - New Jersey's best punk, funk, and junk" that I'm looking for.  And I still need a "Mutiny on French Street / Girl From Bayonne" which I will trade well for.

In the past year I've also found a 1982 single by the Hypnotics called "3 Songs" which has a lot of the same guys who appear on the records above, but which seems to have no direct Hughes involvement.

Updated again:

Terry Hughes - Time to Turn / So Glad 7" Rubber Ball 171, 1982 PS
Jigs & the Pigs - The Reason I Rock / My Nature 7" Force, 1982 PS (guitar)
Brian Jaye - Sit Back Sally / I'm Not That Cool 7" Rubber Ball 171, 1983 PS (guitar/songwriting/production/engineering)

Hughes, Baldwin, Rachel - Temporary High / Somewhere Else 7" Rubber Ball MPPA 7094, 1985 NS?
Terry Hughes - Mutiny on French Street / Girl From Bayonne 7" Rubber Ball, 1986 PS
Various - ComPILEation LP Joyful Noise MPAA-1999, 1986 (with Hughes, Baldwin & Rachel "Let's All Get Depressed Together")

I added the comp which has a pretty good Hughes, Baldwin & Rachel track.  Insert says "this sound is dedicated to Joey Ramone".  He also recorded about half the other bands on the comp including an ok Jigs & the Pigs track he does not play on.  Full info here:

http://www.discogs.com/Various-ComPILEation/release/5291508

I still need a "Mutiny on French Street / Girl From Bayonne" which I will trade well for.

I’ll chime in old this old thread cause Terry is from my old hood. His first band was called The The and they formed back in ‘76. They toured with Nico, John Cale and the Police. He later formed Jigs And The Pigs after The The broke up in ‘82. My sister caught them live in the Foxhole (Red Fox Inn) in the late 70’s.

Terry’s sister ran Rubber Band rehearsal studios which was in New Brunswick and later moved to Perth Amboy. It was home base for all the locals like the Mad Daddies, Genocide and all the NB bands on Mutha like Send Help, Skull Duggery, Brunfuss.
