fine.
it was about a decade ago when i was closer to wavves fag's age. i was having trouble findig a job, so i went and applied at the local metal plating factory and was hired on the spot. they showed me a long video detailing all the safety equipment we would need, and then turned it off and gave me none of it.
i showed up for my shift that night, and a guy in the lunchroom came up and started talking to me.
he asked "do you speak spanish?"
"no"
"are you in jail?"
"no"
"then why are you working here?"
turns out the majority of the workers were either illegal immigrants or on work release from the county jail. these people are worked like slaves or else they get sent back where they came from.
so, i punch in and walk out on the floor. its about a hundred and ten degrees, and the air is thick with a chemical haze making it difficult to breathe. thank god they let ya smoke!
i got put on the front of a line putting small metal parts onto racks. from there it is dipped into several tanks, and they are taken off at the other side. still doesnt sound that bad, but believe me, it was. the racks came in several sizes, and none fit that parts quite right. i had to jam the parts in there full force, and almost every single time my hand would slip and get all cut up on the metal shavings covering the racks. after doing this for several hours my hands began to look like raw hamburger.
for several days i did this work, coughing out loads of black shit every night when i finally got home after my 12 hour shift. one night a rack fell off, and they gave me a big metal hook and said to get up there and fish it out.
so i climbed up the tanks, covered in warning signs saying "stay off!" and "danger - electric current", trying to keep myself balanced and at the same time fish the rack out. that was my last day. of course, any time i needed a job i would go back. it became a joke the the hiring manager, to the point he would ask "how many days ya gonna last this time?" or when he would pop in the training video i would put my feet on the table and pretend to be eating popcorn.
a 12 hour shift of metal plating work with a buncha convicts and illegals, that is intense. that is stressful, hard work. $8 an hour. playing festivals in spain, having people like your band and release your records, thats easy living. i am not ever going to feel bad for someone who "got too popular too quick". fuck that.
