DUDEZ, you're CRAZEE!  That B.S. fucking rules - PRIME TIME GIZ ROCK of the highest odor.  'PITFALL, PITFALL, NAAAAW-NAAAW-NAAAW-NAAAAW-NAAAAW-NAAAAW....'

Single totally makes up for him producing those fags the Middle Class.  I tracked him down via the net last year when I first grabbed a copy of the single - he's into 'production' and 'management.'  His specialties?  Soft core porn actresses!  BILLY S. STARR IS THE MAN!

Yet another damn 45 that Bomp was dumping in bulk for a buck a pop back in the mid 90s, should've just thrown one in with the Users, Earl Mankey, Some Chicken and Needles & Pins 45s I was picking up.

That was a hell of a visit I paid to their warehouse in 1995. Mark Stoopid had beat me to all the super rarities, but there was still pleeeeeeenty of great junk from 1979 just sitting there gathering dust.

Because of you I'm gonna waste 6 more minutes of my life giving B.S. a third try.

Listened to this again. Collin saying something is good is pretty much the same thing as anyone else saying something is bad. I wonder if Billy S. plays 'Let's Play Doctor' for his clients.

Maybe it's because I've reached a higher spiritual plane (that is so high, I can't explain!)

But no, seriously - wouldn't you rather have a disc where the laughs on THEM (B.S.) and not on YOU (Germs, Bags, pretty much every stupid fucking L.A. Punk band?)

Crassness and ineptitude are the cornerstones to my wobbly model du punk so B.S. is just how I like it.

It was even better that Billy replied to me via his Blackberry (became very interested when I mentioned my ex-girlfriend!).

I've got to say that I appreciate gurls' anti-punk stance, coming during an age where a lot of og punk stuff gets automatic praise and b-team bands from 76-83 are offered up as redemptive manna. I don't actually agree with maybe 90% of his tastes (Germs and Bags suck, well, ooooooo-kay on that one...) but it's as subjectively valid as Quasi-Young Steve's dismissal of anything that isn't based on the Archies sonic model. It's a take, you can argue it, and it keeps the ball in the air. Nothing more stultifying that uniform agreement.

However, I just have no doubt at all, not even a smidge, that as an 18-year old bopper I would've had a fuck of a lot more fun at a Bags show in 1978 than I would've at, uh, a Capital City Rockets gig in 1975.

And I suspect that a Hawkwind show circa '73 Space Ritual-era would've topped 'em both.

But where would a Rockin' Clones gig fit on this chart? Or a Berlin Brats? Or Thundermug? Or the Insults?

I agree. Much rather read some head-slapper from Colin (Dead Boys suck?!??!?) that displays an original opinion than a bunch of people going, "Duuudee...fucking Brainbombs!!!" or some such display of groupthink. The Bags do suck though. At least the Dangerhouse 45 is pretty boring compared to other stuff from that scene.

I like stuff that deviates from the Archies sonic model. I just don't like sounds derived from heavy metal, 90's blown out trash rock, hardcore thrash, and unmelodious attempts at "breaking new ground."

The Bags are better than the Dead Boys, I'd let Stiv and Co. slide under the waves while I threw a preserver to Alice and Co. I'd still have Rocket From the Tombs' versions of most of their best songs to sustain me anyway.

Fuck, Dead Boys were better than Rocket From the Tombs. STIV RULES!!!!!

Bags 45 is fucking BORING. As are the songs in the Decline. Alice Bag's voice sounds like a rabid dog that needs to be put out of its misery. Stiv sounds like a rabid dog that's gonna bite your face off. Big difference.

They're both pretty marginal and cruddy in my opinion.  Stiv's the more interesting of the two, obviously, but probably more as a stylist or performer than as a songwriter or singer.  Don't really know what sets the Dead Boys apart from shit like the Boyzz or the Godz, but people seem to love 'em.  For me more than anything it's the vocals that I hate (not that the music helps).  That 'yeh-yah' style.  Same reason I have a hard time making it through ANY Radio Birdman song without getting really pissed off (and not in a cool way):  'ReallyGonnaPunchYou!!...YEH!!!...OHYEAH!!!,HUH!,YEAH!,LETSGO!!!!.'  Just so fucking stale, mechanical and deliberate.  'WEEEE're SOOOO TUFF, LET'S HA-A-A-AVE SOME FUN!'  Forget the Stooges, they're not even a passable surrogate for Blue Oyster Cult.  Alas.

But, back to the matter at hand.  That being BILLY S. STARR IS THA MAN!

I'm still looking for the first draft of his NOVEL that he emailed me.  Shit was gettin' hot and heavy between us for awhile!!!!  I was thinking about showing him my meat (maybe make ME a STARR)!

I like both the Bags, Dead Boys and a lot of LA punk bands.  I feel....so....conflicted ....maybe I should go buy a bunch of marginal powerpop and lame protopunk records..

My third eye is wide open.

Gotta admit that I've never been a huge Dead Boys fan, though I like the live vids, so it's probably a recording thing. Bags never did nuthin for me.

In terms of it being "nice" that Collin's anti-punk or whatever the statement, no it's not "nice." The world is filled with genre queers, what I want (in terms of advice/reviews) is someone who likes good music across genres. I'm not going to sit around all day listening to "just" anything. These people are helpful in that they dredge and dig to the very bottom of the barrel, and while most of the stuff dug up is in fact the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality, they're able to hit gold that no one else would have taken the time to find (hence some great compilations / leading to cool reissues). What's "nice" about Collin is that he's a good sport when people give him shit and seems like a nice guy. And I'll bet there are a buncha of cool records at his house that I've never heard of.

Steve's taste is different from Collin's and completely illogical / all over the board. But Steve's a good shit. If he liked the Brainbombs we might consider making him a Knight of the Rock Table, but that seems unlikely. I'll have to talk to RFA about that one.
